Sounds like your on the right track. Lots and lots of birds in that part of the state. I find that later in the season they are dispersed more on the national forest land and you can find them in very remote locations at higher elevations that you would think a bird would go. With that said.....don't be afraid to get just above some private land / fields (on public land) and call the birds to you......especially if you see a loan tom or jake running through the field. If you have the time, the onx mapping and the patients, it will all come together this year.
Also....try and roost some birds at night, sneak in the next morning while it's dark and set up.....it can get real exciting when they come out of roost. I have seen birds come out of roost as the sun was rising and I have seen them come out of roost a couple hours after the sun has been up. They generally make a lot of noise when they wake up and fly down out of their roost.
good luck

I’ve seen lots of birds in and around the powerlines nw of Ione. It’s forest service. Should be able to find birds on public if you do enough looking around.

Good Luck Shorthair this will be my 2nd year as well. Had birds around last year but couldn't get them inside of about 65 yards so never got a shot off. I'll be back at it again this year :-)
