Well I have beat the life almost completely out of my 2007 riding mower, time to start looking for the replacement.
Currently I have a combo of a 42" Toro that mows lawns and pulls a little cargo trailer for dirt/weeds/whatever, and also an older Simplicity that drives a tiller and I did get a blade on craigslist that works decent.
Goal is to replace both of these with one new or newer unit that is built to last and starts without all the effort it takes to get the simplicity to run.
Would love input from others that have bought a lawn tractor, any brand. Smaller than a full on tractor but built to last unlike the normal riding mowers you find in the big box stores.
Would love to have a blade on the front, a PTO for a small tiller would be awesome as well. Right now I am in the looking online and browsing around to see what is available. Soon I need to visit a few dealers like Deere and Husqvarna. not stuck on either of these just familiar with the names.

I was going to say get one w/ pto but you mentioned that. My cousin has a John Deere that’s been really good. Has a drive over mower deck, a pto they use for the snow blower & it can haul a decent sized wagon for chores.

I have about an acre of grass to mow. Used to have a John Deere X300 (one of the better units you get from the dealership not a box store) with a 42” deck
It would take close to an hour and a half to mow with it. Ended up getting a John Deere 2 series tractor with a drive over 60” mower deck. Cut our mow time down to 35-40 minutes. I would look at getting a unit from a dealer. Either the larger lawn tractors with bigger deck or even a 1 series tractor if you think you could put a front loader to use. I have used my tractor way more than I could have ever imagined.

Had good luck with kubota L series tractors,a couple of them have roll past 10,000 hours on the tach with bare minimum maintenance

I have a John Deere LT180. It doesn't have PTO just a beefed up non box store Lawn Tractor. My buddy has an X series. Both mow and pull a little trailer.

I'm a Kubota guy (tractor and rider) but the Deere 1 series looks very interesting. Maybe a bit big, but it looks very versatile.

Impressive! JD tractors (not mowers) are better than they used to be but can’t rivsl that durability. But nothing like JD green

I'm new to this game of tractors. I need to update my JD 42" riding lawn mower this year. I have about an acre 1/2+ to mow on unlevel ground. What kind of money are we talking about? What type of options are must have vs. want? I am looking for the next step up, or two from a riding lawn mower, but I don't think I need a regular type tractor. :dunno:

Cub Cadet or John Deere .look for one with a horizontal shaft engine. You wont find them at Lowes or Home Depot

I have about 2 1/2 acres of lawn / pasture to mow, some on a fairly steep slope. The best thing I did for myself was splurge on a Deere GX 355 with diesel engine and 54” deck. Mowing time dropped from over two and a half hours to just over an hour. Power steering, hydroststic transmission, traction lock. Sweet.

2020 Kioti CS2210 22 HP Diesel lawn tractor with front end loader (600lb lift), 60" belly mower, rear ballast box, rear tiller, rear box blade, lawn tires, and rear PTO. Cuts 5 acres of both lawn and pasture grass in about 2 hours. During the last snow storm I used the front end loader to clear 18" of snow of the driveway for several hundred feet. Sweet little machine, 0% for 7 years with Kioti.

Are Kioti not priced up there with Kobata?

No tax would be a bonus but no way i would pay that for a kioti over a kubota, add a mower to that kioti and your tacking on another what, 2k so youd be at 16,675, you can get a BX2380 with a 54 mower for 17k or 60 mower for 17,300. Yes youd pay tax but if you ever sold it youd reap that back, and dealer and parts support if needed.

This may meet your needs. LS tractor is same as New Holland. Probably flexable on price since he is selling his house.

Thanks all for the input, I think the Deere GX 355 sized machine is probably what I am looking for. I do like some of the bigger options just not sure I can justify what it would cost versus how much I would use it.
I mainly just need to mow and once every 4-5 years a blade for pushing snow would be nice. I am still on the fence regarding the tiller, recent changes to my gardening methods may have just about eliminated the need for tilling. Could just rent one every 2-3 years when needed and not have to store and maintain it.
Now what I really need is a new metal shop to store more stuff, then I bet I could talk myself into all kinds of purchases. :chuckle:
-
Just remember a shop has the same rules as a gun safe. Figure out the biggest shop you'll ever need, then double the size. That should be just about right (for a few years).
-
Been researching online and have not found any smaller sized garden tractors that have attached tillers. I don't want a tow behind tiller with a separate engine, I want less cylinders to fight each spring.
Really like some of the compact tractors but I know there are areas they cannot mow how I am setup and would still need a smaller mower, so for now avoiding that path.
Think the search is now moving to the best mower that will do what I need and handle a front blade. I need to walk around the property to figure out any tight spots which may influence the size of the deck. Thinking 48" minimum at the moment will grow depending on measurements, and a bagging system. The john deere 300 series look pretty good at this point but still researching.
