2020 Blacktail
Easy to follow process
Step 1 - Shoot the deer
Step 2 - Cut off and skin the head
Step 3 - Bury the head in the garden for five months
Step 4 - Dig it up and hose it off
Step 5 - Hang it in the barn with the others

 Nice work!!!!

Dang, like the results. Hmmmm........ Garden Euro ?
-
Did you bury the antlers and all? Or just the skull and leave the antlers sticking out? Looks good
-
I taped black plastic bags around the antler bases and buried it with just the tops of the points showing - I've done maybe six or eight bucks this way
-
Looks good.

I've tried this several times and never with good results.

Place skull in pot, bring water and some powdered detergent to a light boil. Once the flesh starts loosening put on rain gear, and hit it with a pressure washer. Quickest and easiest way I’ve come across. Next day use some volume 40 or 50 and it’ll turn perfectly white. I’ve probably done 30-40 this way.

I think it depends a lot on the soil moisture. We did this with one over in Spokane and after a year it was just kind of mummified.

Did you have to dig the brain out first or how'd that work?
-
I didn't dig out the brains, eyeballs or even remove the tongue or lower jaw - just took off the hide and put it in the hole.
I've got very rich soil with a whole bunch of different ground critters that seem to eat everything but the fat which washes right off with the garden hose. No scrubbing, scraping or cutting. The brain cavity was clean as a whistle but some chunks of stuff did come out of the nasal opening when I hosed it off. All the thin little bones in the nose are intact.
This isn't how I'd do it if I was going to display it in the house. The bucks and bull that I have in the house were beetle cleaned, decreased and whitened by taxidermist. When I do it this way they look more like you found them in the woods which is a look i also like.

I think it's perfect.
