Title: N.E. Wa. late whitetail hunt
Post by: Buckshot Bill on November 08, 2007, 06:57:36 AM: Anyone been up in that area this past week hunting or scouting? Any snow yet? Any kills? My son, a friend and I are heading that way tonight for the next 4 days. Just wondering what the latest is up there.

Post by: hambone on November 08, 2007, 07:23:46 PM: been hunting around 49 degrees north unit been really dry not much movement on deer one hog of a buck was taken on Monday heard the guy shoot seen the guy later had a 6x7 really nice buck took pictures he didn't have a good camera.going to send the pics. to him also seen a huge black bear. today we got some rain.good luck

Post by: Palmer on November 08, 2007, 07:51:55 PM: My Father was hunting Priest Lake area and weather is moving in. There should be some rainy weather coming in.

There wasn't much in the way of winter kill for the whitetail so you should see at least a few. In the last 4 years I saw 4 bucks and 3 doe. I had a shot each year. Bucks were all 3 yo and up and had to be over 200#s. I called in all the bucks by grunting and one by rattling. I know that doesn't sound great but it gets better if you're near some farm land. They respond well to a tending grunt or a doe grunt.

The WDFW report for '05 states that 20% of bucks taken were 5 point and up.

Post by: PolarBear on November 08, 2007, 08:16:38 PM: I'll be in the Tacoma Creek area at the end of next week chasing whities. Lots of folks but not many venture off of the roads. Find a fresh scrape or rub and sit on it. As long as it is not in a heavily traveled area, odds are pretty good that he'll be back in the fading hours of daylight.

So I'm home working. At least my two who were carrying rifles put lead on target. One spike, one doe :). My three buddies are returning tomorrow, I hope they did poorly 8). Well, ok not really, but I am very jealous.

the hunting here is always good......sometimes the harvest is poor though

This is going to be my dad and I's first trip to that area to hunt deer. It's going to be a scouting/hunting trip. I think my dad was looking at the wildlife area and forest service there east of Colville. What can we expect as far as hunters/etc? Is there places we should avoid or look for? My dad has been successfull hunting whitetail in northern Idaho this time of year so we have the tactics side down.
Also, any recomendations for a hunter friendly hotel/motel over there. Looking to call today and make reservations.

I think your plan is pretty good as far as area goes, and as for hunter friendly motels.......that is all we have over here.

I realized after calling around that the hotels/motels are all filled with hunters when they told me they're full and won't have any rooms available unless some of the "deer hunters tag out." I'm hoping to put some meat in the freezer this year. The weather sounds like it might help with a little cooler temps and some rain/snow mix.

Heading up above sullivan lk and also above mill pond tommorow morning for 2 days any reports? Not sure why i'm going, was up there weds afternoon hunted in 2.8 miles into the woods and only jumped 1 doe. hunted 11 days this year up there and above orient and have not seen a thing.

Post by: Buckshot Bill on November 13, 2007, 02:58:23 PM: Well, just got back last night. 4 days of hunting from south of colville to northport. GOT SHUTOUT! AGAIN! Was in the alladin area, little pend oreille as well as some others. Almost every buck we saw was on someones property. No one would let us hunt their land. Must have asked 15 folks/ranchers that we had time to stop and ask. Lots of doe in the public lands. Saw a few bucks but they disappeared in the thick in a matter of a few seconds. Tag soup for me this year :bash:. I'm really discouraged about hunting that area anymore. 1 deer in 5 years. Skipped some years in the past. Seems to be too hard to find good hunting areas. Maybe I'm not in the right areas. I guess I just don't know that area well enough :dunno:. I have hunted regular season for muleys but have been fascinated with getting whitetail these past years. If anyone has any suggestions for future reference please PM me. It's a lot of money to go over there and get skunked.

Congrats to the others that had successful hunts! Oh ya, we met some great people/hunters from around the state. We stayed in Colville at the Comfort Inn. Met a great guy and his boys from Selah. My friend from Alabama was impressed with Washington hunters and their hospitality. The camaraderie in the parking lot was great!

The 4x4 is nothing to brag about he was only 11" wide. All deer weighted about the same, smallest being 76lbs. and the buck 98lbs. hanging. Had a great time though, lots of people. Have some meat for the freezer.

Didn't see any monsters taken but some decent ones. Biggest was a fair 4X4. Seen one really nice 4X4 in a guys yard munching on his apple trees in the middle of the day. That buck knew he was safe where he was and he wasn't going anywhere too far from the yard. Saw him like 3-4 times over the trip.

Congrats firemechanic! I've hunted the Huckleberry a few times. Didn't make it down there this time. Maybe I should have!

And I imagine that they've had a bad run in with bad hunters that don't ask...that was the problem when I lived on the farm as a kid....hunters always sneeking into the property by way of a neighbors, who hadn't givin permission either!

We'd find dead coyotes, gut piles and tracks....makes a family fairly mad, and ruins it for everyone else......sorry to say.

Public land hunting is hard, bucks are very weary and totaly nocturnal.

I can relate to that statement, I sought & received permission from a landowner to hunt on his property with my little girl. we had a couple of good scouting trips and were waiting for opening day only to find it full of orange! the landowner's custodian spent most of his time asking them who they were and telling them to get out and in the process they all drove the deer out, couldn't find a one where we could at 'em.

Post by: Palmer on November 17, 2007, 11:16:43 PM: I enjoyed all the pics. I'll put some up as soon as my cousin emails them to me. We had a great time this week. The Monday night wind storm was especially helpfull in bringing out the bucks. I suspect this weekend has been exceptional with all the nasty weather. The three of us harvested 5 bucks and 1 doe. The biggest was 128 #'s dressed out and had an outside spread of 20". One of the bucks almost gored my cousin. They're deep in the rut.

We hunted public land. Deer are all over but you can't let them smell you or see you move. If you smell or try to find them they'll usually hide from you before you know they are there. Just find some trails, rubs, or scrapes like the previous post suggested, then sit on it. The Whitetail can't see you if you don't move, however, if they are close enough they are known to be spooked by as little movement as a blink of your eye. I got one of mine from 10 yards off my tree stand during the small snow storm Thursday morning. The buck looked at me several times but I stayed still and he never really saw me. I had to wait until he walked behind a tree. Then I put the cross hairs on him as he came out the other side looking at me.

Idaho Panhandle is said to have 200,000 whitetail as quoted out of a newspaper article. Taxidermist near Newport tells me there are 50,000 whitetail in Washington.

I was hunting an area with a lot of scrapes, but it was very thick and hard to catch deer unawares. Lots of fat on this buck and is very good eating.

I will be heading north here in the next couple of days for my late archery hunt. Got my stands up on Sunday in an area that had some great sign with rubs and scrapes. Looks like they are in full swing and the hunting should be good.
I myself hunt public land and got a decent buck last year and hoping to do the same this year. Nice thing is, I have my second deer tag to fill also. So I can spend a little extra time in the field and go for a nice buck. Hopefully I will be posting some pics here in the next few days!!!! Again, great pics!!!!!!

I've shot those end of the season rutting whitetails before so I knew what I was in for when I pulled the trigger. I cooked up the heart and made a sandwich out of it. It was so frickin tough, I couldn't bite it without pulling it out of the bread. I'll have to take a meat hammer to whats left of that and grind the rest of the critter. I can tell now, I'm in for some pretty tough gravy. Damn, I wish I'd shot a barely legal button buck that was still nursing.

As my wife was taking the picture, she took one sniff and said "I AIN'T EATIN ANY OF IT"! After working so hard to get this nasty smelling buck home, it kinda pissed me off.
