Title: Chokes for TSS
Post by: Call em in on April 05, 2021, 08:35:58 AM: I have a question for anyone who has been shooting TSS...which choke and ammunition have you had the best patterns with? Any can you tell me some of your experiences with shot distance, etc., on wild turkeys.

I know the appeal to most about TSS is you can kill birds at longer ranges with a .410 or 20 ga. I am most interested in 12ga chokes, but feel free to post whatever ya got!

Right now I'm leaning between factory Full or a variety of Patternmasters that I have. I know I will need to pattern my own combination of choke, gun and shell to know for sure but I can't right now because of family and work obligations.

WOW!!!

That's an incredible killing pattern at 60 yards.

I now have TSS/Choke envy.....

Where was your point of aim on that 60 yds target? Have you tried their #9s? They consistently shoot better out of my Remmy than the #7s with an IC .665.

Post by: northwesthunter84 on April 05, 2021, 10:01:13 PM: I put it on the head. 50 or less I’m on the waddles. 9’s were about the same density as my 7s at 40 so I went with sevens for availability when I bought them 3 yrs ago. I will be shooting them for a while, bought a few boxes back then.

Ordered a Carlson TSS .650. Going to pattern this week. Same choke went on my wife's Benneli 20ga same Federal ammo. Also have a couple boxes of Hevi-shot HeviXstrut 5,6 in tungsten going to try to.

with my SBE2, this .650 works best. not sure of your gun, but i like that tube! working with an indian creek in my affinity 30 ga, got a .562 and was ok, waiting for a .555 to be back in stock but as with all tubes, different guns react differently. Friend with Mossberg that as i understand come over bored ( think this is the term, barrel is not constricted at all), cant take these tight constrictions, sprays pattern, he is in the .685'ish area ....

have a buddy with Mossberg and they don't pattern well with tight chokes, its the over bore as i understand.. sweetspot for tss 9 around .682-.685 for my guy...

Post by: kselkhunter on April 06, 2021, 01:51:42 PM: Russ is correct. Be careful on going to too tight of a choke with TSS, and use chokes designed for TSS when feasible. Those TSS specific chokes have gone through an extra hardening process. Because TSS18 is actually harder than some shotgun chokes.

I load my own TSS18 for all bird hunting, and mylar wrap the shot inside the shot cup to help keep any pellets from escaping through the slits in the shot cup and contacting my barrel/choke. For larger sizes like my anti-bear 1B Buckshot TSS18 loads I double mylar wrap the shot. To protect barrel and choke. As I don't know how the shot is wrapped in factory ammo, I'd suggest being conservative on how constrictive of choke to use with factory TSS.

TSS18 naturally holds a tighter pattern as it doesn't deform like lead and bounce around on each other as much going down the barrel. I shoot Cylinder choke for decoying ducks, grouse, quail. Modified for geese and pheasant, and Full for turkey (occasionally geese if I'm expecting longer shots).

Post by: Call em in on April 09, 2021, 08:07:50 PM: Great info Kselkhunter. I finally got out to pattern a few gun and choke combinations at 60 yards. The best for me, by far, was a 24" SBE 2 barrel with a factory crio Full.
