Hello,
I normally use Delo oil from Costco. Now they carry Kirkland brand oil. Just curious about your opinions. Thanks for your input.

Costco is THE LARGEST retail distributor of oil... i would not be surprised if the Kirkland Brand is rebranded Delo 400. Private labling of booze, canned food, and toilet paper al fit this model.

I made the same switch about 2 oil changes ago. I haven’t noticed a difference, except in my wallet, good price on Kirkland oil.

"Kirkland Signature Heavy Duty Diesel 15W-40 is blended by Warren Distribution (WD) which is the same oil marketer that makes Walmart's Super Tech brand. Warren Distribution blends Mag 1 oil which is their own house brand."

I bet I get flamed for this... :chuckle:
The oil marketing guys have really gotten into everybody's head. Bottom line is - find an oil that matches or exceeds the API spec's required by your engine (CJ-4, etc.), and change it regularly. If it is a diesel from pre-2004, you may choose to add an additive that restores the sulpher available in oil back then that isn't there now - but unless you're running that engine at a high load all the time, it probably won't make a difference.
I use whatever I can get at the right price for my diesel engines on my boat and change it every 300 hours. Delo 400, Mobil, or even the Napa brand bulk barrel I can get up here in Sitka. 17,000 hours on the main and 25,000 hours on the genset, still running strong. I'm a little pickier for my 6.0 due to the HPOP and injectors, but still just run basic dino oil. Haven't had an oil-related issue on that truck in 160K.
Find the right grade and API spec of oil for your engine, and change it. You'll be fine.

I put Wally oil and AM/PM gas in my rigs and they run like new. Sure, gas and diesel are different, but until I blow something up or read a legitimate story from someone else I can't see spending more for a promise that nobody can actually demonstrate. Show me the data and I'll change my mind quickly.
I run gas trucks to 300k and then sell them to guys that run them for who knows how much longer. I think doing the maintenance is 1,000 times more important than what you do the maintenance with. At 150-200k I get all spunky and do a double oil change - change the oil, drive it for a week and change it again. After that, the oil is clean for the next dozen changes if not more.
I wouldn't hesitate to buy any Costco house brand. From my experience, you will get a solid value.
Gas and oil are funny things, they all come from the same place and everyone has their own secret sauce. With oil, you can research the additive package and confirm it is within specs. With gas, I don't think anyone has ever shown that any additive does anything other than lower your checking account balance.

Walmart sold DELO cheaper than COSTCO did. What’s the Kirkland diesel oil sell for a gasoline now?

Shell Rotella T6!
T6 is not an apples to apples comparison since it’s a synthetic line. Nonetheless Shell Rotella T4 is another good choice as are most of the majors top shelf 15/40’s.

Is the T6 better than the Delo 400? I switched to T6 when costco stopped selling DELO, and it costs me about $21 more per oil change, not significant it it is a better oil.
-
Synthetics will give you longer service & change intervals. Better is subjective
-
Do a Bearing test with just about any type of oil, they all run about the same as long as viscosity is the same.
The key with any oil is to change it on time every time. Driving habits dictate a lot of oil change intervals.

I sell Acdelco and Delvac 15w40. Both have served my customers well.
Change your oil regularly
Drain your water separator regularly
Use a Cetane booster like Motorcraft PM-22A ( In Washington Cetane is not regulated like octane is) it will work for all diesels not just Fords

As a diesel mechanic, I use almost exclusively Delo with the exception being if the parts supplier offers manufacture branded oil for when the engine is still newish/under warranty
With the exception of caterpillar which retella is recommended I almost exclusively use Delo 15w40 unless specified then it’s either Delo 100 40wt or Delo 400 40wt or 30wt
Although ConocoPhillips offers an oil called PowerD which is not emission compliant however and is meant for agricultural implements and non highway industrial engines and this oil has the “good stuff” left in it like zinc and phosphorus and stuff.
The biggest thing about oil is that the cheaper stuff is periffin based and under high temp and loads it can separate break down and cook off so while Delo is the industry standard be aware of cheaper oils and read the jug and look for an API (American petroleum institute) endorsement or a certification rating like API CJ4 or similar I forget what the current rating is but hope that helps
-
Amsoil here.. been to some schools on oil, mostly all synthetic is good now days.. the additive package in the oils are were its at.. breakdown is the devil from contamination... you may be surprised how long some oils will last if you don't have crossover contamination... auto manufacturers go to the fail safe mileage/ replacement periodicities... have gone to annually here with changes and oil is still acceptable pretty much. Ams used to have a send in test program to evaluate your oil life, don't know if they still do but.....
-
US army did a study on motor oil and found that modern heavy duty oils with an API rating do not separate or break down under normal operating conditions and went a million miles on a single oil change by using bypass filter technology and took oil samples at each regular service interval and found issues like a failing head gasket and wear on accessory components but that the oil itself if kept clean will not break down at normal operating conditions
-
I really liked Wolf's Head and Kendall oils when they were refined in Pennsylvania with PA sweet crude. They were good oils. I've been using Napa semi synthetic blend recently. I agree probably more inportant to change oil on time vs brand.

My 2020 Ram 3500 specifies either MOPAR oil or Shell Rotella in the owners manual. First oil change I used Rotella T6.

I would use what the manufacture recommends, i am in a slightly different world in AG but some of the tier 4 AG stuff is not 15w40 anymore, but the old guys come in wanting it and we have to steer then straight..

I switched to the Rotella T-5 a few years back in the grey jug. Its been great and ive had 2 oil analysis done by a lab and they said whatever im doing keep doing it. This at 7500 mile change too.

Wow!!!!
I bought about 20 gallons of delo 400 for like $12/gallon a year or so ago for my diesel pick up. I saw it on sale and decided to stock up.
Looks like more than double now.
