Hey gang, it has been a while. :hello:
Looking to spend about $1,200 on a riflescope for my 70 year old Remington 721, chambered in .270 Winny. Thinking about a Leupold VX-5HD or a Swaro z5. I'm not a fan of Vortex. I want to keep it around 44mm objective, no illumination so it stays legal in the West, and about a 3-15x range. Deer and antelope out to about 500 yards. i bow hunt elk. Thoughts on either or an alternative are appreciated.

I would consider jumping to the mark 5...and keep an eye out on snipers hide for a dealer or used one
Or the nx8
I've just had too many problems with vx3s &6s to trust the 5...
Also 6 screw rings...redundant but its just one more thing to prevent a screwed up hunt

PM me for the # to Rock Hill . I have purchased 2 vh5's . Under $900.00 shipped and no tax.

Get the Swaro Z5. I love mine. Great glass, and very lightweight.

Take a look at the ziess v4 if you havent. Can be had under your budget amount and i feel they are the best for that money right now.

Standard 3x9 with duplex crosshairs will work out to 500 yards if you understand how to use the crosshairs and your rifle is zeroed for 300 yards.

Holy Bean Counters!
I don't have anything to offer on scopes, but welcome back!

id second this if you are wanting a twisty turret scope. 4-16x44 is a great value.

I have a ziess v6 (a little bit more than your budget) on my new rifle and love how clear it is. @opdinkslayer ruined me by letting me use his on my permit deer hunt, I think his was the v4.
Great scopes but the "twisty turrets" need to be reset to the zero stop before you shoot or else you are going to miss bad when trying to show off target practicing. :bash:

You need to start remembering to check the twisty turrets before and after shooting! Bring out your ocd!
The couple things i dont like about the v4 are that the magnification ring and parallax adjust opposite directions than my other scopes. It hurts my brain a little bit but not enough to dislike the scope. Just ruins a little muscle memory. :chuckle:

A little against the grain but I’d look at a Nightforce SHV 3-10x42 with a non illuminated forceplex reticle. Well under your price cap, tougher then you know what and will easily do what you’re asking.

Yup I have the V4 6-24x50. Best bang for your buck out there when purchased off the demo list for $799 @ Redhawk Rifles. I own two of them actually & they’ve been solid!
It sounds like it was a good thing I had already done the twisty thing prior to your arrival on the scene to give that buck a dirt nap huh Rainer? :chuckle: :chuckle:

Thanks all! I read every ones comments twice (or more) and whilst mulling it over I cam across six boxes of Federal Powershok .243 for the gun which I already have a sexy Zeiss Conquest HD5 attached to. Its one of two loads that my gun tends to group sub moa (the other being Hornaday American Whitetail). If I can score a few more boxes I'll be able to get by this fall without the need for a new scope. if not, I'll have this thread. Fortunately we have good lead time until fall. 8)

It is quite overpriced. A friend recommended a Celestron 65mm Ultima Zoom Spotting Scope for use in hunter class. You need a spotter to see the bullet holes even at 100 yds. The Celestron is $155 from Amazon & will resolve bullet holes at 300 yds, the farthest we shoot. There are 80 and 100 mm Celestrons also available.
One thing that’s just as important as the scope is a rigid stand. Tripods all seem to wobble in the wind. The best is to clamp an aluminum angle down to the bench & use a car window clamp on that. Nice & rigid - no wobbling.

I also own the 2nd gen. V4, but in the 6-24. Its probably the best scope I have ever owned, great scope for the money!
