So not a hunt but a lethal removal
-
Looks like it could be fun.
Thanks for posting.
-
Great find, thanks
-
I may have to put in for that! Being part of the ONP Goat hunt might help my odds!
-
Who ever gets in and read it here, all I ask for is one good steak. :cue:
-
‘In hunting, the animal is destroyed for recreational purposes’. Nothing like trying to paint the most negative picture of hunters out of this...surprised they’re removing so many
-
I cannot tell if people are supposed to apply as a team, or hunters apply independently and then recruit meat hauler volunteers?
-
Removal means you don't get to keep the meat its not a hunt where you keep it

The document states each removal team can keep the meat of one buffalo in total. Distributed at the end of the week. At the discretion of the parks service (ie if you violate their rules in the removal process you get no meat). The rest gets distributed to the tribes.

I don't think that's necessarily true. It's at the discretion of AZFG.
I plan to call them and ask what the plan is on that. If I'm allowed to keep meat, I'm totally applying.
-
i imagine this will be like the goat removal lottery in Olympics NP. many times many groups will apply but like anything else, cant win if you don't play..

"Be able to haul out on foot without motorized access"
Ouch

"Be able to haul out on foot without motorized access"
Ouch
Going to be a lot of embracing the suck on that one. Hopefully they're above the rim.

Just take it out like that old Johnny Cash song.... One piece at a time.

I drew the coveted Copper river tag in Alaska a couple years ago, they are a very interesting thing to hunt. Their ability to suck up a magnum round and not flinch is scary. Made me laugh when I watched "Dances with Wolves" while during the buffalo hunt they would drop with one shot from a long bow? The bison I shot had by far the toughest steaks I have ever eaten. We had to grind almost all of it. There could have been some "cold shortening" of the meat though, after quartering, left it overnight in the field and the temp dropped to -20. They are a very tasty animal though.

Did you access the area by boat? I bet that was a fun time.

Did both floated the Copper twice in the fall, saw a lot of animals but they were always in a bad spot, ie upstream after we floated by and there is a ton of downfall in there to overland a dead bison. My friends are good help, but they're not stupid. We hiked into the spots Rinella talks about in his book. Went back in the spring on snowmachine, made things much eaiser.

Is access as bad as Rinella talks about?

We saw a good bull up where he shot the cow, but there was no way we were going to try to take our pack rafts down the Chetaslina to haul it out, we just pulled out and hunted closer to the copper. The soil in that area is only 4 inches deep, so the trees fall over like match sticks.

If I recall correctly the pack raft didn't work very well for him either. Didn't he almost die doing that? Good call on your part

Sounds like they are taking individual applicants rather than teams like the ONP goat cull.
(then you can add a team to help haul meat)
-
Team player. I'm available second week in October.
-
@hirshey @blubberhunter @brushcrawler @betterderrick
Give me the word I'll do the paperwork.
-
Only 45,000 applicants. Sounds like Washington odds.

I'm a little fuzzy on the math here. The Park Service wants to reduce the size of the herd from 600 to 200 but they're only going to cull 12 animals? I could imagine a herd of 600 will drop between 60 and 100 calves just this season. :dunno:

i think the article is wrong, you kill as many as you can. But you can only keep one bison for the whole group. I wouldn’t do this cull, they also want you to pack everything else out on foot, as in every other bison. Do you can then give it to the tribes. I wouldn’t be caught dead packing half a dozen of those things out of that hell hope for terrain. Unless it’s easy to pack. If every single applicant had to pay the fee they made over a million dollars on fees alone
