Title: My 09' Turkey
Post by: washingtonmuley on April 24, 2009, 08:55:45 AM
Well here is how my turkey hunt went. I headed to Spokane on the 19th after getting off of work in the am and arrived at my brother's house at 4:00 pm. We headed out to a new area to scout for the next Days hunt. We saw a few hens and heard some birds going to the roost so we were excited about the upcoming hunt. After setting up the blind we left and returned early the next morning to only see hens and one longbeard that would not come in. The next few days were more of the same but the temps were in the low 80's and the birds would not talk once they came off of the roost.Well the end of the hunt was fast approaching so I called an old high school buddy to see what he thought. We decided to go just southwest of Spokane for the evening of the 23rd and see what was happening out there. We heard 4 toms and a bunch of hens go to the roost. We returned the next morning and about 15 or so birds with 5 toms flew out of the roost to a field about 150 yards away. After about 30 minutes they crossed the creek and right to us. I shot the first tom that appeared at 15yds. He had a 9" beard and 3/4 " spurs. Not huge but I put in some miles for this bird. Jakelope was nice enough to offer to post my pics so they will be up in the near future. Good luck guys

Not huge? 9" beard and 3/4" spurs sounds pretty good to me, but maybe those NE birds don't round off their spurs like these birds over here do. A 3/4" spur down here is a beast.

Don't get me wrong. I'm very pleased with my bird but I shot 2 Rios in oregon last year that had 11" beards and one also had a double beard with an 8". Their spurs were 1" and 1 1/4". I got spoiled last year.

11 inch beard is a pretty high standard for just about anywhere.  Great Tom.

Awesome bird.  Congrats on sticking with it.  I spent 4 days hunting this year and am still in the hunt for a longbeard.  Had a few chances but didn't seal the deal.   :dunno:
