Title: Mt. Whittier camping
Post by: Gwhjenkins on May 06, 2021, 05:43:56 PM
If a guy draws a mt. Whittier or Norway pass tag, does it come with a camping permit?
I’ve tried calling but can’t get ahold of anyone.

No it doesn’t.

No permit, you have to jump on early and register just like everyone else. Very difficult with the quality tags, not as difficult with the bull tags.

As stated, definitely not. For getting a camping permit, the later the better your chances. All the September dates and nearly all of the October ones were reserved last year by the time hunting permits were announced.

What happens if you just find a spot and throw out a bedroll?  I’m just thinking that there are probably guidelines stating that you have to stay on trail wile in the area, but that’s not really feasible for hunting. So maybe the same logic applies to sleeping spots?

no.  The monument is hyper about anyone camping in that area unless in one of their special spots.  And their "camps" aren't great either.  I had Mt Whittier and just hiked in everyday two extra miles.  Weather was awful with blizzards that pushed the elk down and out.  I  did have a permit to camp but didnt use it.  Norway Pass you could camp in the green timber areas without a permit.  The rules are fuzzy here, the Monument master plan says permits aren't needed in green timber, but the Managers and signs might say you need one.

The rules vary in different areas of the monument. It is complicated and takes some research to stay within the rules for different areas.
What I found: in the "Mt. Margaret Backcountry" where Norway Pass and Mt. Whittier permits are, you can go anywhere off trail, but you need a permit to camp at one of the designated campsites- otherwise no camping allowed. You can camp anywhere north of the Green River anywhere, anytime as that is outside of the backcountry area boundary.

Smith Creek/Pumice Plains/etc. are not in the same area and have their own rules.

 :yeah:

FWIW, the 1st open date at any of the campsites right now is October 21. It gets a bit better after that.

Spent Friday up there. Forget the permit. Apparently you can camp in parks, schools, or anywhere else for that matter for free. Done doing the right thing and forking over my earned money.

I signed in the first day permits were for sale to buy a few just in case. Almost the entire year sold out in an hour or two.

I have some campsites in Norway Pass if myself or any of my hunting partners get lucky and draw!

Hopefully someone will offer their permits if they don’t draw.
Good luck everyone and thank you.

What are they gonna do if you throw out a bedroll and sleep if you draw tag I mean won’t be a camp just sleeping  I dunno seams like they should make some spots  for the tag holders is all

Are you asking two different branches of state government to do some reasonable coordination?????

That would make too much sense , but seriously what are they gonna do other than if someone asked back there ask you not to sleep over night I mean I’d  have to really weigh the options  in that scenario

My profile picture is in Mt. Whittier. I know a buddy who just camps off trail with a small setup and has never had any issues.  :dunno:

Probably don't have enough points for me to worry about this but I have been applying for the norway/ Mt. Whitter area for a few years now and was totally ignorant to the lack of availability of camping within the backcountry area. Thanks for the heads up.

I know that spot.  Snow wasn't all gone yet.  That's where I stopped and asked for the keys to the truck if my buddy was continuing.   :bdid:
