I put in 4 states and have ok odds in Idaho and absolutely terrible odds in the other 3 states 😂But trying to be realistic I am going to start looking into a guided hunt. It’s my last oil and my last real “bucket “ list animal to hunt. I’ve done almost everything diy and prefer that but I just want to go goat hunting and reality is I might never draw a tag. I’m looking for recommendations from anyone who has had a good goat guide experience and I prefer Alaska. I don’t need a trophy but would like opportunity at a good representative billy.

You might want to check the Washington Wild Sheep on line auction going on right now. This is a highly reputable outfitter I’ve hunted with my self. Their sheep hunts are usually booked 3 years out.
Great opportunity and help raise some conservation $ for wild sheep.

I was in the same boat as you a few years ago.... wanted to go really bad and drawing a tag is like pissing in the wind,
Don't discount Canada, I would recommend the guy I went with but he retired. The upside of Canada is it's an option to drive.

Thanks! I can’t find anything on their goat hunting? Just info on the lodge. Have you goat hunted with them? Or have knowledge of their goat hunting? Sorry to pepper you with questions ha ha. At this point looks affordable and good option heck with it I could go this fall 😂

My daughter hunted sheep with them and I was able to tag along as a packer. I did see several goats while flying in and out of sheep camp though. First class operation. The lodge does a lot of tourist business so they dont advertise the hunting side much on line. They have been outfitting for a long long time.

What time frame you looking? How tough of a hunt. I know an outfitter that guides Kodiak. If you want long hair you might look at a Kenai peninsula hunt in Nov. Some that area can be pretty tough hunting. If you want it this year it might be tough to get in as some book out a couple years. :twocents:

Anytime really on the hunt but I’m in Idaho goat and Oregon goat which feels like waste of time. I have reasonable odds Idaho so if I draw this year I don’t need to go guided.if I don’t draw this year I will start planning a guided hunt this spring/summer with hope of going in next year or two. I am not worried about a long hair goat but just want a nice representative billy. I’m really torn of what type of hunt I sometimes feel like I want the whole experience including the suffering 😂 but really if I’m going guided I feel like I might as well pick an “easier” hunt. I have done and continue to do traumatic hunts on my own ha ha. I will continue to put in for the diy opportunities with goat so I still have that chance. I just don’t want to wait forever anymore for an opportunity that might not happen.

I've never hunted with a guide but id look hard at Kodiak. Theres some really good outfits on the rock, VERY healthy goat populations and lots of options for styles of hunts and time frames. With an 8 month long season you could land a beaver on an alpine lake and be right up in them and plan for a few salmon days on the back end, go in November and combo them with a deer hunt (doing that this year) or go in March when the days are starting to get long again just like the goat hair.

 thanks I was leaning that way already-do you have to draw the tag?

nope. Registration hunt rg480 is otc. Its the whole South half of the island. Obviously as a NR you'll need a guide but the tag is the easy part.

If you want a guided hunt in Alaska then I would look up Jason Bunch of Kodiak Backcountry adventures. Jason is the man when it comes to getting after goats!!

I was looking at his website last night. They take some great goats. Looks like he only operates within the northern draw areas though.

Not sure what units he is limited to but I have known him for over 24 years and he knows those mountains on Kodiak as well as anyone. When we were stationed together he would cover 3 mountain peeks just for a workout.

Check out Nin Ridge Guides. I hunted BB with them and have a buddy that guides spring bear hunts for them. Not sure what Karl's schedule is but he's a very Humble guy with decades of experience. I just got a picture of a 10ft 1in bear with a 28 5/8" skull that will make the book after the drying period.

I thought he was asking about goats?
-
But if you want large bears he can do that as well. http://www.kodiakbackcountry.com/

I assume he was just giving a positive review for the outfit in general :twocents:

those permit areas are all single digit draw odds for NR unfortunately. Id definitely call him to see if he does any hunting in rg480 though. I'd not be waiting on poor draw odds when there's otc options available. Guy has guided some gagger Billy's :o

Looks like a great outfitter and reccomendation but yes I am trying to get AWAY from the drawings uggh-not succesfull idaho again! Looks like I will be doing some planning for the guided route. I did look and I do still have .16% odds in Oregon so there's that :chuckle: :chuckle:

Thanks for all the replies so far. Been some good solid ideas. Keep em coming

Those tags are a beautiful thing! except there not mine :bash:
-
I would check with Jason about odds as he had 9 of his guys draw the tags this year. I think chances might be better than one might think.

:yeah: worth a call. They may have outfitter tags of some sort :dunno: best draw odds i can see are the Uganik River permit which averages 13% over the last 4 years. Rest are all 3-9% on average. Which ironically is better odds than about anything in North America :chuckle:
-
My son and I went with Lonesome Dove Outfitters out of Cordova and we both shot goats. There was some adversities but the owner Dennis Zadra took care of us and I would absolutely go back and hunt with him again.
-
I did a goat hunt in Alaska in 2018 and would totally recommend them, DM me and I would be happy to give you the information to look up.

I spoke with Jason after he got out of bear camp and he said the percentage for his clients has been around 30%.

Wow! Lucky suckers then :chuckle:

Something about being able to apply up tp six times for the same hunt.
-
Yeah I was talking to an outfitter up there about two years ago and he had some application strategy that ups the odds, don't remember the particulars on it.
I've not hunted with him but got a recommendation for Robert hardy and after talking with about a dozen guys on the phone in Alaska and BC decided on him, and then found out my daughter was on the way. When the schedule opens back up for me in a year or so I'll be calling him back to try to get after a goat with him.

Once y’all do it once, you’re going to want to do it again. Just a heads up. Those things get in your blood, regardless of whether it’s a big time trip to AK or a Washington tag.

I'm in with 9 points this year. If I remember right that's the lucky number.

Thanks for the recommendations and tips everyone :tup  the planning begins! Still open for more ideas thanks again
