Some people like the new 3.5, but I hated the 2017 I had after having the older 4.0 V6. It has more peak hp, but less usable power where you actually drive. With a headwind on the freeway it couldn't stay in 6th gear on flat ground. When I was at high elevations in CO (8000+ feet) with a headwind it sometimes couldn't even maintain 5th gear on flat ground. But the old 4.0 and the 4Runner I got after it could maintain their highest gears in the same conditions. Mine, along with many others, came low on transmission fluid with their sealed unit. The Techstream check isn't accurate, they have to manually check which takes a few hours. Also had quite a few transmission TSBs while I had mine. After a few months I hated driving it so away it went. Love the 4Runner, much more usable bottom end power with an overall average of 21.4 the first 30k miles. Toyota really needs to step up the Tacoma's power.

A lot of people are gearing theirs for better performance while others are tuning theirs.

Was just reading Ford is offering a factory tune for the Ranger which bumps up power to 310hp and 370 lb ft with a warranty, for about $800.

What are you going to be using it for? Commuter, hunting rig, putting around town? I’ve owned quite a few Tacoma’s and one 4 runner. I used the Tacoma’s for commuting/hunting rig. I always liked the 4 cylinder with the manual transmission. Can’t go wrong with that choice. But if you want to tow anything I wouldn’t advise a Tacoma period. Go with a tundra if you want to tow. :twocents:

I had a 2001 2.7, auto, 4x4 ext cab, great little commuter/mountain rig, dependable and would go anywhere. Last year I sold it and I bought a 2017 crew cab TRD 3.5, auto, 4x4, leveling kit with 33's, I put a borla exhaust and a intake on it. It tows my 18ft Tracker Targa fine, even tows the 17ft Hideout camper. I get a solid 17 mpg around town and back and forth to work. Went to Montana hunting last year and got 24 mpg on the freeway. I drove up a road this winter where only tracked vehicles had gone, I had 4x4, chains and factory locker and went everywhere they had gone. Great rigs but they ( like all cars now!) Are at a premium.

The functionality of the truck is unrivaled - I have a truck that can haul dirt, concrete, wood, tools, swampy/dirty dogs, garbage/dump runs but also a truck that I can park in a Seattle parking garage when I have to go there for work. The gas mileage is fine and the power is fine, but the automatic transmission is completely garbage and if I were to do it over again I'd get the manual. Engaging ECT (electronically controlled transmission remapping) button modifies the timing of the gear changes and makes life much more bearable, but is a pain at low speeds.
Overall I love the truck but hate the transmission.

2017 TRD Off-road with technology package, purchased new. I have a canopy on mine and it's about the most functional thing I can imagine.

I have a 21 and have been looking into the OVtune. It is supposed to get rid of the transmission always hunting for gearsYou can find all kinds of info on you tube. :twocents:
Also have 07 v6 with 202,000miles. Regular maintenance and a couple front wheel bearings and no issues.

Eh, I'll be the negative nancy. Nothing I type matters if you are buying new but oh well, gotta get my post quota in for the day.

My brother had a couple of 4wd Tacomas, a 95 and 08. Before that  he had a 88 2wd Toyota pickup. All 3 were 4 cylinder with manual transmission.

-The 88's engine was GREAT. Tons of low end, shifted super smooth, and was reasonably comfortable. Clutch was going out at 130k miles so he got rid of it

-He sold that for the 95 4wd Taco. The engine went from easy to drive low end power to more of what I called a"zingy" engine. We lived on a gravel road. You had to rev the engine out a bit when getting going from a dead stop which then you would 9 times out of 10 spin the rear wheels on the gravel. Gone were the comfortable seats in the 88 that were replaced with what felt like Plywood seats with a layer of cardboard for padding, sewed over with fabric. The aluminum impellor on the waterpump deteriorated due to electrolosis at 170k miles. He got rid of it. I think he paid $17k for it and sold it for $9k 13 years later. Thats resale value kids

-Enter the 08 4wd Taco. The one that supposedly had the frame rusting through problem. He never saw anything on his. Back was a more user friendly 4 cyl engine and the seats regained some padding. This truck was alright, but God the blindspots were terrible. The toolbox he put in didn't help. Check engine light came on at 25k miles and he never did anything about it, ran fine. He got rid of it with something like 125k miles and bought a half ton chevy in 2018 I think.

RESALE VALUE WAS GREAT on all 3 and they were pretty RELIABLE I must say compared to my Chevy S-10s I had at the same time. My S-10s were just so much more comfortable and easy to drive.

My 7th Toyota truck now is a 2011 with the 4.0 with 308,000+ miles now ! Only replaced shocks, tires, brakes and both front hubs and anyone knows me knows this truck is worked year round in the woods ! With the new Tacoma’s are great as long as you put a pedal commander on it

I'm driving an 05 double cab and it has about 240k miles and running strong. I've replaced the fuel pump and the shocks and gave it a tune up. Its do for brakes and tires soon. The only thing I don't like about it is the 5' bed but you would be suprised how much you can pile in there lol I pull a 24' camper with it just fine. I've been debating trading it in for a tundra but I just love the truck and not sure what I'm going to do

Make sure if you get a Tundra that it has a back-up cam, especially if you need to park in a city. Full size are quite long. I loved the roomy front seat and the mileage was almost the same as my present Tacoma.

I had a 2006 for 12 years.
Sold it with 176000 miles on it, so I have some practical experience with the brand plus I turn my own wrenches....

First, it had flat rear leafs within 50k miles and Toyota refused to admit they had a problem until it became big enough to be a recall then they screwed me on reimbursement for the leafs.

Second, the frame is the cheapest C-Section frame in the business.  Only people who haven't owned trucks would accept the flexi-flyer to screw the parts to.

Body integrity is mediocre.  Trim strips flying off on the freeway, gas cap door rusting off like an old beer can, tailgate can't support more than 150lbs or it bends....

Cheap, cheap, cheap interior. Everything is cheapest crap I've seen in any modern vehicle.

Buy the automatic because the 6sp is engineered by morons who are marketing to mall crawler 19 year olds that know you can't back a trailer with the reverse ratio installed and cruising at 75mph is 2400 rpm...crazy stupid.

The only thing crazier and stupider is the people that buy them at ridiculous resale prices....to them I say 'THANK YOU AND GOOD RIDDANCE!'.

You might have an automatic not 6sp manual, and I'm guessing if you DO have the 6sp manual, you haven't had to reverse the trailer up any sort of grade or you wouldn't be making such an intelligent post....Or you like to replace clutches....Or you're one of those drivers that think if your car has enough power to move the trailer, it must be a decent tow vehicle.

Regarding the tailgate, go onto Tacomaworld and read about all the 19 year olds loading their MX bikes into the bed (5' won't hold a motocrosser without the tailgate open!) and how many have bent tailgates.
Not sure about the gas flap but you must be amazing.

Roof moldings came off driving down the freeway? https://www.tacomaworld.com/threads/roof-molding-came-off.277252/ (https://www.tacomaworld.com/threads/roof-molding-came-off.277252/)
Only a couple hun to replace...Thanks.

I  have an 08 ,I’ll be quite frank it’s my woods/family adventure vehicle was my best friends before I bought it from him ,I have had to do ball joints once , I have done a few minor things small lift ,new shocks , different rear leafs . I drive it  my rzr sometimes and have gotten into some crazy places . I have had several Toyota’s over the years sold maybe cause wanted something different or heck everything has a price . Screw the  people who complain Toyota name is tried and true and that’s a dang fact , the resale is incredible which is a gift and a curse . O I tow my tide runner all over , enclosed trailer ,my only complaint is the 5ft bed but heck I knew it when I bought it ,buy one don’t look back

I had a 2013 Tacoma sport short box double cab 4.0 motor
Great truck loved it
Hauled my duckworth boat and little RV trailer all over the west
The only thing I didn’t like was the size of the gas tank
Not enough capacity and range
Traded it for a 2020 Tundra
Same look on both trucks
I like white

2013, 73k miles.  Truck has been bullet proof.  Outside of routine maintenance, I haven't had to do anything. However, my family is outgrowing this truck and I want a full size.  Going to be a sad day when I have to let go, unless I convince my wife to keep this as my hunting/commuting rig haha.

I do, however, wish I would have bought the Off Road instead of the Sport. That fake hood scoop just did it for me at the time.

Depends on whether you need a fulltime woods rig? Daily plus hunting rig? Family hauler? Usually solo or maybe one partner or are you hunting with a crew?

I loved my 98 1st gen. 3.4 5spd. Excellent rig tough and dependable. No cab room. Excellent for solo sleeping in rig, or two  if your tenting it. I loved the size in the woods, and tranny and motor combo was perfect for my needs. Not great for car seats, and I needed a rig that could double as a family hauler if needed, so upgraded to a 2010 off road with 6 speed. Good for what I needed at the time. But as has been mentioned gave up bed space, and reverse is tall. Although I had no problem managing it and never needed to replace a clutch, although I would use the two stage transfer if under heavy load, turns out its there for a reason :chuckle:

I've had my 97' 3.4 manual since 2000 and couldn't be anymore happier with it, only thing that's needed replaced in the 21 years I've had it is the starter and the ac, other than that just normal maintenance.

Like most Toyota 4WD it is a gutless turd with mediocre gas mileage and a very dependable drivetrain. I have liked all my Toyotas but I'm realistic about the cons they have. For one thing I would pull the back seats on that new Taco because the idea of putting a human over 100# back there is a joke.

All the "bullet-proof!" comments from city dwellers with <100k miles do make me laugh though. F-150 gets my vote.

I've been driving a 2015 F150.

112k miles, zero complaints.
Springs spring
Frame holds stuff on where it's supposed to and doesn't quiver like a noodle.

Interior materials and components are much better quality than Toy.

Smooth, quiet and powerful at 80mph getting 17mpg, which is the same mileage as the Tacoma I had which hated cruising over 70mph.

The only thing the Toyota did better than the F150 is park...The 154" wheelbase F150 has to be backed into parking spaces the Toy would fit in easily.

The F150 is 10 times the truck and has needed next to nothing in repairs, whereas the Toy needed upgrades out of pocket just to be mediocre.

No regrets.

I've had three different toyotas, a 1985, a1990, and the 1997 that I still have.i had almost no issues with any and sold two for more than i bought them for.ive seen all the toyota bashing that you post and could care less about your opinion on them. Overall Toyota makes a damn good truck.

112,000 miles isn’t much especially on pavement for a aluminum body , wait till it hits 250,000 miles and see if it’s still together. It’s some poising match going on but I just know that I’ll keep driving my Tacoma everywhere I need to go

Ya know they really don't look that big. It came with 30 by 9.5s on it and so I upped to the BFG KO2 all terrains in 31.6 by 9.5. Next step will be to put the 3 inch leveling kit/lift and put 33s on it when these wear out.

The same basalt hunting roads in Central Washington that rattled the rear window out of my Tacoma (I'm lucky it didn't drop completely out and break) are no issue for my F150.

Maybe those flexy Toyota frames are by design?

That'd be like giving a Benjamin to a drunken hobo.

I can't be positive, but he may not like them. If only he'd give us some indication. :dunno:

112,000 miles isn’t much especially on pavement for a aluminum body , wait till it hits 250,000 miles and see if it’s still together. It’s some poising match going on but I just know that I’ll keep driving my Tacoma everywhere I need to go
The same basalt hunting roads in Central Washington that rattled the rear window out of my Tacoma (I'm lucky it didn't drop completely out and break) are no issue for my F150.

Maybe those flexy Toyota frames are by design?

Kind of reminds me if Exo pack users that like a pack to bend with them  :o

Why haven't you bought those flex window tensioners? I've been running them for years on those basalt roads and never had an issue. Even in 5th gear. :dunno:

My old assistant Scout Master said that all roads are smooth at a certain speed, you just need to find the right speed and all is good.  He drove an old early 70's station wagon and claimed most gravel roads were like driving on glass around 60 mph.  I rode to summer camp with him once, only once.  Sometimes it just takes the knowledge and skill to properly operate the machine.   :chuckle:

I actually did this two years ago, late into elk camp for archery season.
24psi in the tires and about 40mph on basalt.
It works, though I don't recommend it.
We topped a rise and had 3 screaming bulls and about 80 cows in front of us.
We bailed out into the woods and it was the first time my son was within feet of a screaming bull.
It hooked him on archery elk.
If it wasn't a true-spike season, we would have been tagged out in minutes.

Considered one for the wife but the F-150 was the obvious choice for us. The Ranger is smaller and nimbler but that shortbed F-150 really fits places.

I hate that Ford got my money but darn it they sure did.

i wouldnt get one older then 97-98. in 97 they changed some fule maping and programed the ecu alittle bit better. i would also stay away from the 05-early 07. those trucks have frame issues. ive seen a few of those trucks where the motor mount will tear away from the frame. i havent herd any real complaints about the 3rd gen tacomas. they are not a full size and they are made out of plastic and pop cans. how ever you can get away with towing most things. now the 1st gen tundra is where i would look if you needed somthing alittle more beefy. The 4.8 v8 is a milllion mile motor and the transmission they put in them is a beefy sob.

i havent herd any real complaints about the 3rd gen tacomas.

What?

The motor has no bottom end power. The transmission is constantly hunting for a gear. Many came low on transmission fluid, which required a manual check by the dealer due to its sealed unit, which required them to have it for half the day. And many TSBs for the transmission as they were trying to figure it out for years, not just the first year.

Many people are regearing it or getting the after market program to give it some usable power.

again. no real complaints. no power in the bottom end is perception on how the power hits. the 3.5 has alot of power and gets pretty good mpg for the amount of power it makes. if you want bottom end buy a 2nd gen or get a Colorado with the diesel . Toyota owned up to the low fluid and the shifting issues. then again the trans "searching for gears" isnt realy an issue for most people. show me these trucks blowing head gaskets, burring up a gear, rear end blowing up, or the frame coming apart and we will have real issues.

I had a 4.7 2007 Tundra and it was a great truck.
