Title: Where did 100,000 spring chinook salmon go?
Post by: Badhabit on May 11, 2021, 10:25:09 AM
I searched for the 2021 Spring salmon return prediction and they predicted 143,200. Count over Bonneville is only 37,317 to date. Where are the fish?

Their predictions are all paper fish anyway. Might as well be throwing darts and putting the numbers down as your predictions. In fact I'm not so sure that's not what the state does to get their numbers. Either that or they get their numbers from their bingo cards.

Did they say that number should pass Bonneville?  Im sure many swim up the Willamette, the Sandy and Clackamas river.  Then also fish going up the Cowlitz, Kalama, and Lewis rivers all before hitting Bonneville.

How about all those that went to Japan, China and Russia?  They are not regulated except for full holds, then they stop fishing until unloaded.  And nobody can stop them from taking all the Salmon they can find.

Man I miss the fishing at Cedar Creek. From 1986 to 1995 fishing was very good for us. I would fish from early April to just before Memorial Day.

I doubt China or Russia buy much springer.  Japan on the other hand know and are willing to pay for prime fish.

This might be why fish passage is slowed. Also, they are springers until 6/15.

I believe the upriver forecast is 75k (over Bonne) and 140k for total return. Halfway point now...it’ll be close.

Ghost nets. No kidding. Those things be killing forever. Please report them on the Derelict Net hotline. Years back, my oldest brother found one 400 miles northeast of Hawaii while sailing that was so long he never saw the end. Mostly garbage in it that he could see. Who knows what was below.

There’s been 43,000 springers over so far and there’s another month to go. Also the prediction to come over bonny was about 75k. Your numbers are for the mouth of the Columbia river including tribs below bony. I don’t think much thought went into this post. We will likely have more fish then predicted at this rate.
