Title: Nutria bounty
Post by: Kain on May 13, 2021, 07:43:39 AM: Bill passed last year that made money available to states for Nutria control. Not sure if WA is trying to get any of it. If they do it probably would not be for a bounty but we could hope. Maybe the WSTA could look at it.

"This bill revises the grant program, including by expanding the program to include grants for eradicating nutria in any state that has demonstrated a need for the program as well as grants for restoring wetlands or agricultural lands damaged by nutria.

I could even see individual land owners paying a per animal bounty to remove them. Maybe a system where local trappers and/or nutria hunters are contacted by those land owners through some kind of directory. Circumventing the government would be far more cost-effective, as well. :dunno:

I imagine the state would get the money and use in house or part of the university system and bypass citizens. I think that is what they have done in the past. Or just get grants for restoration projects and not do anything about the nutria.

US Fish and Wildlife was looking at it 10 years ago but I never heard about results.

He said they are abundant and he used to trap them. Not sure what the hides might have been worth at that time.

There was a time when you could get $12 to $18 for large ones. The good old days.
