Title: Klickitat birds?
Post by: elkkiller on April 24, 2009, 05:20:54 PM
Has any body hunted Klickitat recently and tell me if the birds are getting real vocal? Any general areas I should concentrate on would be appreciated!

I hunted Klickitat on Thursday, it was really blowing, didnt get our birds.  They couldnt hear us, we couldnt hear them.  Put a nice Tom to bed, but he gave us the slip in the morning, ran across a few solo hens.   Lots of miles of chasing down scouted birds, but couldnt find them.   Saw some guys with a bird this morning along 142 headed down to 410.

Hey Grizzle! I went out Saturday and had same problem with the wind. Seen 2 hens and 1 bear track. Talk to other hunters and they couldn't find anything either. I wonder where they birds went? :dunno:

Agreed the wind. I was out in the area friday through sunday morning. Sunday would have been the best day but I needed to boogie home.

Could be why it seems that most of the success has been up north or in the blues? Maybe the populations are expanding in those places and not as much in the Klickitat? Maybe they had a rough hatch the past couple of years? Could be a lot of things. If you hunted spots that you had success in the past, I can't imagine all birds have totally moved out.

The turks are there. We spotted a few. Including a tom about a hundred yards off and we could not get him interested. They just cant hear well when the wind is going that strong. It also makes them hole up more. Another one NWTFHunter called in to his truck but his shotgun was under a pile of tents and camping gear.. Good place for it  :chuckle:

Is it usually windy this time of the year in Klickitat or is the wind just a fluke.

Usually it's because of some baby producer that won't pay up on a turkey hunt he owes! :IBCOOL:

Its usually windy down there all the time, but especially in the spring.  A buddy of mine's dad wacked a monster tom last week just west of g-dale.
