If rifle season fits my schedule better, I'll get the rifle tag and then choose a couple quality rifle permits to apply for. Or if I want to hunt the general muzzleloader season, then I'll go with that. No matter how many points you have you certainly can't count on drawing a quality bull permit. So just go with what general season is better for you.

Post by: X-Force on May 16, 2021, 07:50:45 PM: With 20 points there is no rifle quality unit with 10% draw odds and there are no good quality muzzleloader quality permits so I’d go with bobcat. Pick a general season that meets your schedule.

Acutally, your chance of drawing is still slim even with 20 points so I would buy my tag muzzy or rifle based on what I would do without drawing, then put in for the draw I most want, its all personal preference.

Most people with 20 plus points will never draw, I have several buddies including myself with 23 oil pts and haven't drawn and probably won't with less than 1% chance. I have been fortunate to draw a few good tags with average points but that's the part of the system some like. To me the system really screws the younger generation and forces out of state hunting but even that is changing will lower and lower tag allocations across the west for out of state hunters.

Totally agree, I wish everyone would go to Idaho's system, no points, pick deer, elk, antelope or a single OIL species and people could apply for different things in different units. I probably like Arizona system the 2nd best with some preference point tags but plenty of random draw with bonus points.

However, the real problem is just that there are way more hunters than game (which is a good thing for the sport overall), but it makes drawing a tag in any state on any given year increasingly difficult and certainly makes money become more and more of a factor, but that is the world we live in. Happy we still get a chance to draw, it may be small but at least there is a chance.

I quit playing when I watched the tag numbers in the unit I like go from about a hundred to low single digits. No plan in place, no word from WDFW, complete lack of performance in any regard in their part, so I play elsewhere.

If you keep playing, WDFW just interprets that as keep on doing what they are doing, more applicants is a box on a spreadsheet in a powerpoint showing how well the operation is going. Sad but true, you know that stat is paraded around as evidence of their success.

Can't disagree with anything you are saying. I also play in other states and doubt I will ever hunt elk in WA again, but for the relatively low cost to try I will keep buying and applying, just never plan on going, honestly, some of the quality tags in this state have less odds than some of the oil tags or about the same and you should treat them as such.

So far, I have Montana and Colorado deer tags and hoping to add Wyoming for both deer and Antelope, so my slate is full, if I actually draw something in WA now, I might have a problem making it even work. But there is always a way. Good luck to you on your hunts.
