And, it is very important that people who decide to turn in their permits, need to do it ASAP!!! If wdfw doesn't have enough time to process the permits, they won't go to the next person in line! So don't be one of those guys!!!
Unless they published it somewhere prior to the due date, if that's the way they plan to handle group apps they're going to have a firestorm of angry folks blowing up the phone lines. They didn't reference that caveat in the regs, and repeatedly sent mixed messages out via email to different people etc.

explain to me how the #2 #3 #4 selection choices work. I've only ever drawn my #1 choice. how is it you end up with a 2,3,4 selection? I have never had it explained. I have put in for the additional choices before, just never draw.

Each "name in the hat" is assigned a random number from 1 to infinity. So let's take 6.5's sheep for example. Say out of all his entries his highest number is 3. No idea how many cliff tags there are but let's say there are 2. The guys asigned numbers 1 and 2 both had cliff as their first choice so they would get the two cliff tags. so when they got to 6.5's application his first choice has no available tags therefore they move on to his second choice and so on and so on.:yeah: I have been a witness the last two years and this is exactly right. As an archery hunter your highest number could be the 20th down the list but if there are 19 rifle and muzzy hunters in front of you you are technically the number one archery guy and get your top choice.

Few huntwa folks have been witnesses though. It would be great to see the state document the permit drawing detail.The hats are not by hunt choice, they are by category (quality elk, bull elk, antlerless elk). All hunting methods go in the quality bull category and they assign the highest random number you draw.
Using the Species, Category, Hunt Choice as reference.
The "hats" in this case must be hunt choice.
The random number(s) gets assigned to a hunter per category? Or per hunt choice?

As an archery hunter your highest number could be the 20th down the list but if there are 19 rifle and muzzy hunters in front of you you are technically the number one archery guy and get your top choice.
Ah, this makes a lot of sense. They essentially select the hunter, and go and find the highest hunt choice for them. This makes the selection process sequential - and a much easier algorithm to audit. Thanks for the detail!

426 is Diablo unit, it’s bordered by the North Cascades National Park, and it’s pretty rough country to hunt in.
