Thought maybe having a thread on specific species would help people say what they got, then if someone wants to offer advice they could PM them. Plus it’s nice to see who drew what.

Drew my 2nd choice... Muzzy Quality Bull for Rimrock. Have not hunted that unit in 10 years. The real kicker is if the Canada border opens I'll be up there on a Moose/Caribou combo that was rolled over from last year due to Covid. Not asking for sympathy, just never thought I'd draw :bash: Time to scout hard just in case and if anyone is so inclined, advice is always appreciated!
-
Congrats, rimrock is not familiar to me but someone knows out there!

I drew muzzleloader Observatory. Any pictures of bulls out of there I can start looking at to get an idea? Thanks.

Sweet! Congrats! There is a pig out there right now with your tag on it and he doesn’t even have a clue!!

My son drew Mudflow Youth Bull for the second time! Little *censored*!
-
I drew Archery Quality Colockum. Looks like I need to start scouting. I wasn't expecting to draw.
-
Good luck on a great tag!
-
Drew rifle mount Whittier. Never hunted or even hiked it. Should still be a great time. Also drew my bull elk tag for White River I guess I have all the luck in one year. Haha. I also drew Montana deer and elk. With a 410 bow tag 🤣🤣. Should be an awesome year.
-
My son drew the Upper Smith Creek rifle. Rut bulls in September, with a rifle, in Washington state???? This is gonna be fun. He pulled a cow permit in there a few years back and all we got into were bulls and lots and lots of rain and fog.

Major bummer! Only one elk can be harvested.

Both were rifle tags. Both used 14 points to draw. Mount Whittier was my second choice for quality. White river was my first choice for both bull and quality tags.

Sweet RIdgerunner, congrats.
Mountain View: Archery!
Good pull dude, will follow along with your hunt.

My son and I drew early archery colockum. Feel very lucky to draw this hunt. The cool thing is my son is moving back to WA right now after getting out of the Air Force just to spend time with me and hunt together and we draw this tag
Stoked!!

Good Luck

Colockum archery. Purt excited about it!

Drew watershed with 17 points. I have an eastern WA muzzle loader tag. Sounds like this one may hurt an old guy. Any advice?

Drew watershed with 17 points. I have an eastern WA muzzle loader tag. Sounds like this one may hurt an old guy. Any advice?
Well, if you can get a hold of horses you will be much better off. It is steep and deep, without stock, you will be doing a lot of walking. If you come up from the bottom you'll be crossing a creek several times before it opens up a bit. If you come in from the top you'll be hunting down, and I think there is a place to camp towards the middle? I'd come in from the bottom if I had horses, top if not. But it will prob be the steepest country you've ever seen, some potential for a great bull, it's just a tough azz hunt.

you may want to go down there and look at it, you may turn your tag in. Especially a muzzy

Is there a way to see what number you were in the drawing? Never heard of it before but since you can return tags now that would be kind of cool to know.

So how does turning your tag in work? Do you keep your points or are they gone? All I hear about this hunt is how tough it is, and being further handicapped by a muzzleloader? This might be the right option for me.
Just got back from looking watershed over. Hate to do it, but the tag is going back to WDFW. Tough country and being further handicapped by the smokepole, don't feel like I'd have much of a chance. Thanks for the heads up to all who responded.

You will get your points back if you decide to mail back in your permit. But it’s worth a look at, you may try it from the top? But yeah, even tougher w a Muzzy.

I'm headed back to Tucannon for another round of archery elk. :IBCOOL: :IBCOOL:

I will try to tie one to a tree for you but six weeks is a long time and a muzzy hunter might find him. You might hav to drop some feed every once in a while too. :chuckle:

right, there is no camping in the shed, but I thought I remembered a camp area about half way down on the boarder? We had private property to stay at on the boarder and guys would hike up to us from some camp area. Met them where everyone meets, forget the name of the peak.

Anybody want a little Quality rifle Dayton info, you can hit me up. Going to be a tough hunt if you drew it but if you are willing to give it your all, it would be doable.

which unit, you might get some advice if you need it? Those tags are the best, but they come with a lot of pressure, mostly on yourself but fun either way.

Just want to say how cool it is to see all of the excitement from the lucky tag holders. Also very impressed but not surprised with how fast people are jumping in to help those guys and gals out. Thats what this place is all about and what I have seen myself on many occasions.
Congrats to all of you that drew a tag. Looking forward to seeing pictures and hearing stories.

I can use all the help I can get! Drew a Colockum Quality Bull tag. Never hunted the area before, but we just moved to Ellensburg a year ago, so I tossed in for the tag and pulled it. Time to start driving the roads, but anything you are willing to share will be most helpful. I will PM my cell phone number to you as well.

I drew the Quality rifle tag in the Toutle. I saw the Weyerhauser permits are already completely sold out for that area. Does anybody have any advice on hunting the public portion in the north in November? It looks like all logging roads and cuts is there anywhere I can still hunt?
I'm also in a bit of a dilemma. I drew my antlerless tag as well in the 572. That is the unit I usually hunt and I'm confident I can get into some cows.
All I care about is hopefully getting my first elk this year and having my dad be there with me. I think it would mean more if it was a bull but am worried without the Weyerhauser pass the Quality tag might not give me a good chance. I would love some thoughts.
Thanks all!

Congrats on the draw! Interesting situation with the 2 tags. I'd have to think real hard about keeping both as rare as even cow tags are these days.
The Weyco permit would be my preference for sure. The state land has elk, they might just be a bit fewer and tougher to find. In my experience there is more still-huntable timber on the state land than the tree farm, for what that's worth.

My buddy and I drew the Observatory Muzzle Tag. We are very excited and looking forward to getting an opportunity of a life time. My brother in law and friend want to hunt Sep archery in the Manastash. We have spent most of our time in the Umtanum over the years. I am looking forward to expanding into the Manastash. Once I get past my kitchen remodel :chuckle: I will spend as much time as possible over the hill. I wish everyone luck. If you have any information to share please PM me. My group and I are capable and we see elk every year, but we are still very much newbies. Love the hunt and the brotherhood.

20 years ago who knew some of these “quality” elk tags would be OILs? Congrats to all those that drew. I can’t complain since I did draw in 2012 and 2017.
This year I have quality out of state tags. The out of state game is also on a short timer so definitely enjoying it while I can!

Get a DNR public lands quad map either online or from the map office in Tumwater. There is a huge block of state land between the N. and S. forks of the Toutle river. There is also a pretty good sized chunk on the S. end of the unit. I spent my time in the N. end because I live in Silverdale There is a mainline from the town of Toutle that cuts though weyco and goes to the state patch. This state patch is where the 3000 road is, basically runs along the ridge between the forks of the river and goes up to the blast zone area. You'll probably find lots of Toutle info that references the 3000 road. I scouted it a bit, but I hunted down a lot lower. There is a huge difference in vegitation from the low to high in this unit. Normal west side down low, and skinny litle Noble firs up high. It's neat to see really. The state land is open to camping. The roads are also open to dirt bikes and quads. A bike or quad would be a good scouting tool to save gas and cover rough roads easily.
You used to be able to camp and hunt right there no problem
Get some maps and go drive around
It’s been a while so I can’t confirm gates or access
Good luck
I’ve filled a couple archery bull tags with rag horns in there

This is great info. I had the 4250 marked on my map to start and it looks like that ends up connecting with the 3000 line. That's great to know about the feed, the topo map makes it look like there is plenty of water sources as well.
Thanks again. Appreciate the insight.

:o big man is dusting off the elk calls! I'm glad I'm not a huge bull in the Colockum :yike:

I am still waiting on my OIL wa elk tag but a friend was lucky enough to draw wenaha east and i get to tag along. We have secured dave waldron for the trip. Its 1 of 4 rifle tags. Should be an outstanding hunt!

room for 1 more!! :chuckle: Good to have Dave with ya, those are now OIL draws.

I drew Archery Quality Colockum. Looks like I need to start scouting. I wasn't expecting to draw.
Great tag to have!! Some day I'll draw it. My buddy smoked a whopper last year with that tag.
Would love to see a picture. I am going to brave the weather (heat) and do some scouting this weekend.
368 3/8 Gross !!! Stud of a bull and hell of a hunt!
I'd be happy to help if you need it. Any reason I can come up with to go on that hunt again!
-
Not sure I need help but wouldn't turn it away either. Was up there yesterday getting a lay of the land. Could see a fire burning east of Kittitas.

I think they got that fire out but definitely cross your fingers for the rest of the summer.

Hi, I’m new to this forum. And I also drew a Colockum archery quality tag. I would love any and all input.
2 years ago I got a nice cow out of there. Last year I was stuck on a boat out east and didn’t get a chance to hunt. So this year I’m all in.

Not sure how I missed this one, congrats!!! Are you taking the whole season off??? I sure hope you share your story!!

I'd be concerned right now if I had any SE WA special tag......0% contained fire right now is gutting Lick Creek, Peola is hammered and it's only going to grow. Unfortunately may not be a bad year to be in the loser's lounge. Let's pray for a little luck, a miracle, divine intervention what have you. Also, a good portion of Idaho is getting ravaged as well. May be a tough year gang.

Its just hitting the NF edge of lick creek but mainly farm land. Just now there is also a reported small fire being reported on turkey tail ridge in the Tucannon. Neither fire would affect tag holders yet but you never know what the wind is gonna do and we still have another 7 weeks of fire season to get thru

Not good for sure...Silcott/Lick creek fire has consumed 19,000+ acres, and while a sizeable portion has been in farmland, the canyons are getting hit as well. The fire IS in some of the prime Lick Creek unit (although still the SW corner), it's crossed to Campbell grade towards Cloverland and probably will burn for quite some time. Sad to hear about the Tucannon fire.
modified....Lick Creek is currently being razed to dust, heading to the mountains with no end in site.

I hope this year doesn't end up like 2015 when I last had the Tucannon archery tag. I almost had to turn in the tag and the hunt was really tough. I'll be setting more cams in the Tucannon next weekend as long as it doesn't end up closed for the fires.

I have family in the general area….I’d definitely check before you head that way next weekend.
Unless something miraculous happens soon, depending on where your setting up the cam’s, it’s not gonna be good.

Oh my gosh time is going so slow. Made it out scouting Saturday and saw lots of cows and calves. Heard a couple elk bugling and when I got home my permit was in the mailbox. I guess it wasn't a dream I got drawn. After seeing and hearing a bunch of elk I am super excited. Just have to wait 2 more months :(. Going to be a long 2 months.

it happens quite often hearing them this time of year. I’ve heard them several different times from June through august
-
There was 2 different ones bugling. They may have been cows as I did not see them bugle.
-
There were elk bugling in Yellowstone near Mammoth hot springs when we were there in the middle of June.
-
They bugle more then you think. I've called in elk in the middle of November. Its just talking.

glad I dont have a blues tag this year

I'd be just fine with one in my pocket too!!!!!!

With the fires going on down there, I suspect there will be some tags turned in.
May make for an interesting year.

My son drew one of the rifle tags for Observatory!! He gets to spend his 13 birthday scouting 2 days before season for an awesome opportunity!! Hunting the rut will be fun. Never had this opportunity before.
-
I drew a Quality Elk Archery tag for the White River unit.
I bought the Hancock permit. Their lands are closed due to fire concerns.
I am planning a scouting trip this week.
Any insights about this unit.
Thanks

Resurrecting this post. Who else was successful or had some fun encounters?
My son was able to full his quality Observatory modern rifle tag.
We watched this bull(Stump) for over a week scouting. Opening day we bumped him out and missed a short opportunity. Moments later my son passed on a small 6by6. Was really hesitant if this would bite us. We learned allot about the rut during this hunt opportunity and prior to season but none of us new or had the confidence to communicate with them AR a herd scale. That evening was unsuccessful. Day 2 we let them settle down and took a different vantage point to see our options. No elk appeared that evening. They had consistently been in this area so we returned the morning of day 3 to screaming bulls. After we weighed out or options and settled in my son made an amazing shot and put his Bull on the ground. I'm so thankful for this time with family and still excited with the out come. Congrats son your amazing.
