However, I am going to do my best to make it out this season for a good deer hunt.
Two questions:
1.) I was drawn for Buck - Palouse (modern). What is the difference between Quality Deer, and Buck?
2.) Any information or assistance in this region would be much appreciated. I would consider it a personal charity if anyone could get me started in the right direction, but if not I understand.

If there isnt both quality and buck in an area then it is the quality of the animals and hunt area.

Usually the difference between Quality and Buck in the same area is dates
quality tags allow wdfw to make more money off app fees

- General Deer Seasons: available to all hunters with the appropriate license.
- Buck Deer Permits: available by drawing to a limited number of applicants. Provide an opportunity to hunt at different times or places than during general season.
- Quality Deer Permits: available by drawing to an even more limited number of applicants than Buck permits. Provide an opportunity to hunt at different times or places than during general season.

Most often, especially for deer, the hunt dates of Quality tags align with the rut, a potential migration, or both depending on species and location. So there are usually only a handful or two of hunters in a given unit, during the time of the year where deer are likely to be the most active and visible, and the opportunity to find a big animal is very real. Hence the term, Quality. That's my take.

As for managing for quality. The state has dabbled a couple times. Generally you will see limited general hunting in the area, but more quality opportunities. Think of the Desert unit. Unfortunately some of these opportunities are then capitalized on by others and the quality is tainted. Predators, tribal hunting, poachers, etc.
