Title: Two questions
Post by: ljsommer on June 14, 2021, 01:56:58 PM
It's been a while since I've made a substantial post here. Life since early 2020 has been nothing short of an absolute train-wreck and unfortunately I've yet to fully recover.
However, I am going to do my best to make it out this season for a good deer hunt.

Two questions:
1.) I was drawn for Buck - Palouse (modern). What is the difference between Quality Deer, and Buck?
2.) Any information or assistance in this region would be much appreciated. I would consider it a personal charity if anyone could get me started in the right direction, but if not I understand.

Usually the difference between Quality and Buck in the same area is dates. Quality is during the rut alot of times.

If there isnt both quality and buck in an area then it is the quality of the animals and hunt area.

There was a bad bout of blue tongue about 4 years ago and the deer have been slow to bounce back. I did start to see more whitetails last year though so that is good.

To me it means nothing since with 18 points I cannot draw either.  So I guess it is more of a dream lol.  Good for you though.  Should be fun.

The categories can be thought of like this:

- General Deer Seasons: available to all hunters with the appropriate license.
- Buck Deer Permits: available by drawing to a limited number of applicants. Provide an opportunity to hunt at different times or places than during general season.
- Quality Deer Permits: available by drawing to an even more limited number of applicants than Buck permits. Provide an opportunity to hunt at different times or places than during general season.

Quality permits are usually the most difficult to draw, and the most valuable. They are intended to provide a quality hunt experience that is limited to a small number of individuals.

Ah ok thank you, so it can be thought of as simply reducing the field of hunters? Is there any "managed for quality" aspect to those tags, or is it just limiting draw numbers?

Most often, especially for deer, the hunt dates of Quality tags align with the rut, a potential migration, or both depending on species and location. So there are usually only a handful or two of hunters in a given unit, during the time of the year where deer are likely to be the most active and visible, and the opportunity to find a big animal is very real. Hence the term, Quality. That's my take.

In some locations I think the designation is for management of a specific species.   For instance whitetail buck, where they are trying to manage a species, but there may also be a quality hunt going on for say mule deer.

As for managing for quality.   The state has dabbled a couple times.   Generally you will see limited general hunting in the area, but more quality opportunities.   Think of the Desert unit.   Unfortunately some of these opportunities are then capitalized on by others and the quality is tainted.  Predators, tribal hunting, poachers, etc.

I’ve been trying for that Palouse tag for years, I have property near Davenport and have seen a lot of great bucks come out of the Palouse tag in that area
