Title: MUST READ- Bizarre survey questions from Oregon Dept. of Fish and Wildlife
Post by: ucwarden on June 15, 2021, 01:27:27 PM
Check out the attached survey, about Oregon's marine areas.  Here are some examples of questions which actually appear in the ODFW survey, which was sent to the public in Oregon.  Pay attention to questions 34,35 & 36 on the attached survey, then someone can explain to me why on earth these questions were included in a survey about marine areas:

To what extent do you disagree or agree with each of the following statements?

God’s laws about abortion, pornography, or marriage must be strictly followed before it is too late.

Fox News, right-wing talk radio, or other conservative media outlets should be prohibited from broadcasting their hateful views.

Getting rid of inequality is more important than protecting the so-called “right” to free speech.

Is this real? Its hard to believe that this was really part of this survey. Could someone have modified this to stir up controversy?

Ya, beginning question #33 the rails get lost. Not super impressed with any of it, really. It feesl like one of those backdoor surveys from when I was in school where teacher's were trying to get dirt on our family.

Has this been sent out already?

Couple more from #35...

"Getting rid of inequality is more important than protecting the so called "right" to free speech...."
"I cannot imagine myself becoming friends with a political conservative..."
"I hate being around non-progressive people...
"Opposition to affirmative action is, by definition, racist..."

What a clown show if this is legit.

Nothing new, OSU, enough said!   IF you haven't been watching what teaches at university's these days, you'd understand!!

Wouldn't be surprised if WA university's haven't sent some trash out yet, besides what they already have!  Worked around a few of them! :chuckle: :chuckle:

It's real (I wouldn't post it unless I was sure).  I emailed ODFW and asked them to verify it is authentic and here is their response;

"Hello Todd,

My colleague forwarded me your email question regarding the recently mailed out Marine Areas Attitudes and Perceptions survey being conducted this year, by OSU and ODFW. The survey has been prompting some questions and concerns, particularly questions regarding the inclusion of certain survey questions (namely questions 35 and 36) and which portions of the survey pertain to ODFW’s evaluation of marine reserves and which are solely for academic research (and will not be included in ODFW’s analysis or reports). We have developed the attached FAQ to help answer questions about the current survey and provide additional sources of information. Please feel free to reach out if you have any follow up questions I can try to answer
."

I'd never fill out a survey like this was it seems to have been mailed to homes. It also appears to me that these folks are either dumb or intentially trying to skew the results.

That said if they are Dumb or ignorant what they might be trying to gauge his political leaning and intensity. I can think of other ways to gauge this, and a couple of the previous questions were a start.

The WDFW survey from a few years ago had some questions (nothing as far out as those) that weren't applicable to the survey topic. I wondered if they were trying to figure out what license holders they should poll or send a survey to to get the data outcome they wanted for presenting to the board. Scary what is going on.

Yeah, the reason I posted it was because the questions were so far out there.  I can't see how any of that is relevant to fish and wildlife work.

Just wow! If this is real, should open a lot of eyes of the folks who have claimed there is no such thing as a “leftist agenda”going on in our country as we speak. I am one of them, never been big on conspiracy’s, from either side, I have always been a bit on the fence, this knocked me off that fence.

FOR THE RECORD - I DO NOT AGREE WITH THE LOGIC BELOW, NOR TO I THINK THIS IS A VALUABLE EXERCISE.  I FEEL IT IS A TOTAL WASTE OF TAXPAYER/TUITION PAYER MONEY.  SO DON'T FLAME ME!!!

I have seen may questions about "why are they asking these inflammatory questions?"  After reading the survey and FAQ's I see their "logic" or at least the cover story, they are using for their questions.

OSU is trying to prove a hypothesis around political orientation, and favor for or against the Marine Conservation effort the survey is asking about.

To accomplish this they need to know the political orientation of the responders.  Rather than use a self-assessment question, they decided to ask the most flaming, polarizing (and liberal I might add) questions possible to get people to react and put themselves firmly into a camp (conservative, Liberal, or moderate).  So they are not interested in the answers to the questions directly, they want to see the reaction so they can classify the responder as conservative, liberal or moderate.

OSU will then take the responses, and segregate them by political group and look for trends to prove/disprove their hypothesis.

Personally I think this is pure garbage and would boycott the survey.  I am sure OSU will use the results to further a political agenda which is something I think they have no business doing. It is disappointing that a government agency would allow such garbage to ride on the coattails of a study, but I suppose I am not surprised.  Very little surprises me these days.

I agree that those questions were poorly worded and of dubious merit, but I'm not getting the paranoia here especially given the explanation.  These human dimensions people in academic wildlife and fisheries departments are always trying to study people (esp hunters, fishers) to determine trends in attitudes and behavior, presumably with the goal to assist with setting management objectives.

The grad student who made those questions obviously wanted to categorize people as extremely liberal, moderate (large swath here), or extremely conservative and didn't feel that people would be honest with their self assessment.  Not exactly sure why there was interest in relating political spectrum to attitudes about marine protected areas - sounds kind of dumb to me, but not something that is indicative of a massive OSU/ODFW conspiracy.

Well said but I still respectfully and totally disagree. Having those questions on a fish and wildlife survey is absurd. It’s definitely to further a political agenda. I’m thinking republicans want to destroy nature and favor dirty air and water for profit. These questions have no place on these types of surveys ever. Also politics shouldn’t be intertwined with any wildlife management. No matter what explanation they have these questions are ridiculous and scary they would go to this level.

To me it's clear they want to be able to make extrapolations as to what type of person thinks a certain way about the marine environment topic or whatever it's about. I agree though it seems pretty out of place
