I'm gonna drink some Wild Turkey to this...actually I already am ;). Got my second bird yesterday morning. Called in two longbeards at about 6:45 am. They split from the three hens and came in. Dad just played it really cool. A couple series of yelps, then clucks and purrs. 25 mins later the dominant one was stutting right in and the other longbeard was taking the lead. It was a cool end to a great season. Man it feels wierd to be done this early.

To my right is the box call I made 2 years ago. It's partly responsible for every bird I've called in this year. I was going to notch it for every bird killed...but I've already lost count.

hells ya man! i knew you had killed one because you left me a message at 7 and there's only one reason you would call me so early. Now you know how i feel to be done super early

nice bird.

Congrats and nice bird!

Congrats FH - the way you light up a mouth diaphragm I'm surprised not to see a few adorning the bird (that's okay I carry an array too).
Wish I could have let you know I was camped out in your area last weekend ... would have just loved to go out with the camera only and get pictures of you nailing one or two of them.

Thanks Dancer, really, I appreciate it. But man I think box calls may be one of the most underutilized of the mainstream calls. Seems like everyone uses a diaphram, and everyone has a box, but once they set up they put the box away. I like them, especially because my dad makes them and showed me how

Heard that 60 % of all turks are harvested with a box call .... I've only got 6 box calls, 7 slate calls with many various strikers, tube calls, snuff cans, push pulls, wingbones, dozens and dozens of diaphragms, etc ... two large tool boxes full of calls (or is that "too large"). Nothing wrong with a box call ... hardest part of any call is knowing how to put it down. I'm learning how to put it down, to use it less, use it softer, etc ... really hard since I like to get them cranked up, but found that when they cut me off it's the thing to do for success.
Again, congrats !!!! :brew:

I called in both of mine with a box call.
I think it sounds awesome.
You can mimic most of the calls with it.

Just gotta know what's right in what situation...which really nobody knows, we just try and sometimes it works. Read an article in Turkey and Turkey Hunting that claimed diaphrams don't work anymore. Really? Hmmmm, I'm not too sure on that. Birds within range seems to differ from that idea.

Nicely done!

fishunt is pretty much *censored* with all turkey calls

Well that's an extension... I've got lucky a few times. Don't you forget all of our scouting trips Justin.

My diaphragm cal was a cluck and almost got the purr out, but he cut me off and came in with big hearts bulging out from his eyes ... last think that went thru his mind was # 6's.

Yep, for the last few birds I've called in just played it really cool. Just read the situation.
