Title: Kuiu Yukon Jacket
Post by: CougHunter on August 04, 2021, 08:22:44 PM
Just moved over to the west side, and I'm looking for a higher end jacket for beating brush in the perpetual rain that accompanies much of the hunting season.

I'm leaning toward the Yukon but I've considered other options like the Chugach or the FL Seak or something from Sitka. I'm especially interested in durability and being as rainproof as possible. Durability needs make me less inclined to go for the Chugach, since it's lighter, or the Seak, since I've been unimpressed by the durability of my previous FL gear.

Feels crazy to shell out the cash for a jacket that I'm going to beat up. Hoping to make the investment worth it, and it'll have a trial by fire for my first high buck hunt pretty soon here.

FL Seak Stormtight is 30% off right now,  I picked up a set.

can't review it yet, but I was confident enough (at 30% off) to try it.

The Yukon jacket has served me well for many years. I highly recommend it. Rain pants I run the Chugach since they’re in my pack most the time.

Thanks for the heads up on the sale! I pretty much was set on the Yukon, but I'm not sure that I can really justify paying an extra $140 for it.

Looks like the FL sale ends today, so I may just have to go for the SEAK.

Well, I’ve owned FL rain gear, their top end coat and pants.  They both fell apart on me, not sure if their newer models are better built, but I’m done w first light outer gear.  I went w the Yukon and it’s bullet proof, love it.  Also bought the pants, great combo.

Yeah, that's exactly my hesitancy with FL.

I've gotten a couple base/midlayers from them in the past, and as soon as I opened the package, I was immediately underwhelmed with the materials and durability.

Not sure if it'd be better with a shell that's supposed to be extra rugged, but my past purchases made me feel pretty foolish paying high dollar for a thin, flimsy midlayer.

I have to say, after having owned the high end lightweight raingear for a few years now, if I know that I'm going to be spending a day in the brush on the westside, in the rain, I'm wearing rubber, not synthetic. I own the Yukon pants and jacket, have actually completely worn out one set of Yukons and bought another set, so I have experience with them. There is no high tech rain gear that will keep you dry like rubber does when you're literally wading through wet brush for hours. Also, you're going to sweat. Don't think the lightweight stuff means you won't sweat, especially in the Yukon set. I have it and use it, and I sweat just as much in it as I do in my Grundens when I'm moving. If you want a good packable set of raingear then yes, the Yukon or SEAK or Sitka stuff are great, but if you want to stay dry while still hunting the jungle, get rubber.

I've been running the full Yukon set for about 6 years now on the coast and love it. Keeps me dry and no complaints for me

Got my FL, paraded around the house with it on, it's not quiet stuff.  Hopefully when wet it'll quiet down a good bit and maybe after broke in a bit.

Anyone know?  Firstlite seak stormtight

I don’t worry about it. Falling rain isn’t quiet, either. I’ve never had a hunt ruined from noisy rain gear and I wear it a lot.
