How good are they? Best bang for the buck?
Looking at the 7-08, 25-06 and 300wsm
Anyone shooting one of these? What bullets do they prefer?
Anyone dislike them thats actually had one?
-
I have the tikka in 25-06.
It's real accurate with 100 grain nosler partitions and also with 115 grain barnes TSX. I am using IMR4350 and IMR4320 for powder. In fact almost anything I have shot out of it is fairly accurate.
I chose it because of pricing. It certainly is not a sako but it should do fine. The main thing which I disliked was the platic bolt shroud. Other than that it seems to be good.
There are a lot of rifles to choose from. Depends on what you like. I have not shot anything but squirrels with it yet.
-
How fast are you pushing those? With job security or lack there of I'm looking at the tikka(great price) as everyone I've talked with(4 guys) accuracy was excellent outa box. Figure the 300wsm would definatly need a limbsaver.
-
everyone that I know that has a tikka loves them to death! If I was buying one it would be either .308 or 300wsm... the 300 is probably the most versatile round I have seen in a long time.
-
Not sure how fast they are going.
I think the 300 WSM would be a nice caliber to have.
One of the things which I was looking for was a fairly light rifle as well. That turned me away from some other rifles. You might want to look at the savage rifles as well. I certainly would not overlook them. Although there were a few details which turned me away from one of their models I am sure some other ones that are probably in a similar category.
-
I have one in the 300 wsm. I'm using Nosler E-Tips going just over 3000fps. I haven't had any problems with it after I replaced the factory scope rings.
-
i just ordered a tikka t3 hunter in .243 winchester... should be picking it up on thursday or friday. i've shot a friend's tikka t3 lite stainless in 7mm mag and liked it. he can consistently shoot groups under or around 1" at 100yds. i don't know what ammo he was using at the time, but i saw the targets.
-
I have a Tikka T3 Lite in both .243 and 300WSM. I love em... wouldn't trade them for any other gun.
-
I have a t3 light and really like it. It packs nice on the long hunts and shoots real well. I shoot the win. silver ballistic tips(300wsm) for deer-my gun seems to like them the best....
-
Never shot one. Handled gobs of em. Have heard about 99% (+) feedback from guys who own em.
They're not my cup of tea though. I just don't like all the molded less refined look and feel of the guns. Just my :twocents: . But again, no objective performance reason to not buy one. Don't really like Gloks either but hard to argue w/ their performance. Kinda the same thing.
-
If you can get past the cheapest feeling/sounding stock in the industry, cheap plastic clips, one size action fits all,ie, 7/08, 243 etc will have a long action, and a plastic bolt shroud, you should be happy with its performance... The 2 I've owned, and the 10+ others I've been around have all shot good.
-

a can of expanding spray insulating foam does WONDERS for the sound/feel of the stocks...and some epoxy in the forend with shot in it if needed. :twocents:
-
I purchased the T3 for my son in 7-08 and love the thing!!! It really shoots nice and would purchase another one in an instant!!
Just make sure you get the right caliber for what you are going to use it for!

Then it ain't a T3 Lite anymore.. grin.. Save up a couple hundred more bucks, get yourself a used kimber or weatherby ultra lightweight.
-
the foam adds less than 3 oz and quiets the stock very well. ony reason to use epoxy is to set a swivel where one is needed. or to change balance.
-
I've seen a couple tikka front studs pulled loose from harris bipods. cheap is cheap, ain't no sugar coatin it.....
-
I have owned 3, currently two and chose them after comparing to everything under the sun... Kimber, Weatherby(with the spiderweb stock and fluted barrel=sweet)Remington Mountain, Savage,... Ruger was never in the running....only other rifle I would pick would be its' cousin, Sako or Steyr Mountain Lite.
Tikkas always shoot great, best out of box trigger, I like the detachable plastic mag, the stock is, well a low cost composite, but not bad and it shoots great.
The factory rings have worked ok, but that's the only suspect piece on it.
Can't imagine pulling a swivel stud out, but any rifle can let one go if you work hard enough.
Plastic parts don't scare me.
Great lightweight, accurate, well made firearm.
Did I mention they shoot?
BTW, 300WSM and 7-08...traded a 300WSM wood/blued for same cartridge, stainless/synth.
If you don't like yours, somebody will grab it in a minute.
I am looking for one in 243 right now.
-
I have a tikka in .300 wsm...I use 165 grain bullets.
Everyone animal I have shot with it (and hit :chuckle:) has died in one shot.
2 bears, 1 deer and a poor coyote.(Ive had it two seasons). I enjoy it and have no troubles recommending it. I would buy another anytime I could.
-
I just bought one in a 300wsm stainless model. Haven't shot it yet but everything I've read says it's the best bang for the buck. I was trying to decide between a Tikka and a Browning X-Bolt but I figured I'd save the extra $300 and put it towards glass. Those X-Bolts are sweet guns but I just couldn't pull the trigger on the price. The stock reminds me of my kids' toys (cheap plastic) but I'm anxious to get out and shoot the thing. If I don't like it for whatever reason, I know I'll have no trouble selling it.
-
i bought a 270wsm last year and love the thing. I hand loaded some 140gr barnes tsx bullets and got 1/2" moa. i'm going to try and use some 130gr this year. Shot my deer in the chest at 250yds and when i skinned the hind quarter you could touch the bullet. 1/2" further and the bullet would of went all the way through him.....oh.i also hit some bone in the front quarter. I have the bullet and it looks exactly like the advertised photo of the barnes bullets after impact. getting off subject, but i would recommend this gun to anyone....shoots awesome, light weight, don't have to worry about rust, and great price......i would recommend a limbsaver though.
-
:)The only bad comment is from a guy who thinks Weatherbys 5's are better than worthless junk marketing hype crap. I'd put the worst tikka ever built against the best weatherby junk anytime. and yup I have owned weatherby junk.
All the other Japanese built guns are better than the weatherby mark5s. brownings, howas, vanguards. etc. all better
If Old timers want to talk FN's they are a bit different.
I like Tikkas for what they cost, I prefer Sako. There are many good rifles, most the guns available now to the public are far better than the average shooter needs.
LOL :IBCOOL:
Carl
-
Carl, I could give 2 *censored*s if you like weatherby's or not. That wasn't the question. The question was about tikkas. As stated before, their stocks are just short of hot trash, 1 action length for all calibers, cheap plastic clips that are spendier than hell to replace. As I stated, everyone I've been around has shot good, but so have most remmy's, brownings, savages, sako's etc. Personally, I'd spend my money on something else, Browning A-bolt comes to mind, never been around a bad a-bolt, same money, hellava lot better stock, better mag, fits ME better. So there you have it, MY opinion.
Later
-
I agee with ya 257 wby Mag on the clip..
the clip is plastic (which I dont mind so much) but it is like 60+ bucks as far I as recall...a bit spendy I would say.
-
I like 257 wby's opinion on everything :chuckle:
-
I love my tikka t3 .270 great gun..havnt killed anything with it yet(have not had it a long time) The only thing I dont like due to its light weight, good amount of recoil..when i get the money I am gonna put a muzzle break on it.its not the kick that bothers me its the muzzle flip...my tikka is very accurate..i have no problem shooting a can of beans at 150 yards and I am a bad shot......
-
my tikka t3 hunter in 300 win mag is my go to gun, period. with my hand loads it shoots -1/2" groups at 200 yards and hits like a ton of bricks. the riffle also fits me perfect. i cant say enough good things about them. the stock doesn't bother me at all, but then again im not the kinda guy that has a bunch of safe queens, my guns are tools and they get used. ive dragged my tikka though hell and its never missed a beat
-
I've seen a couple tikka front studs pulled loose from harris bipods. cheap is cheap, ain't no sugar coatin it.....
thus my epoxy comment
-
:)Up you one 257 wby guy, I dont give 3 *censored*s. :chuckle: I'll give ya a couple more opinions, Browning abolts are crap too, just way better crap than a weatherby5, I make all my comment at the mark5 multilug bolt total piece of junk wby. Actually the Brown Abolt would be OK if they got rid of that mag system.
All the other jap bolt guns you cant tell one from the other. Howa, brown, Vangaurd is much bettrer gun than any Mark5, etc, they are all OK, all will kill game, all will shoot better than most shooters, none compare to Tikka or Sako or FN or Whitworth and many others. The plastic Tikka Mag does not bother me at all, it works, it wont bend or dent, and today many plastics work much better than metal. The synthetic stock is as good as any factory offering and long /short action comparisons have no validity in hunting rifles and may not in bench rest (in BR they 'Might") if you are a good enough shot, say Dave Tubbs class, but you aint in Dave Tubbs class.
I have never heard of a multi-lug bolt gun (more than 2 lug) worth owning.
Carl :chuckle:
-
Carl, if you like em, good for you. I don't. So whats the point in having a short action caliber, in a long action? Think about, clue;the inherit accuracy benifits? Come on, remember PPC cartridges? Anyhow, if you dig em, great. As far as the mags go, I've seen 2 fail. One was last year, a pard lost the chance at a 145'' type buck on a guided hunt in S. Oregon. Blacktail that is. Hellava time for the spring to pop out the top. The other was the same, spring and follower coming out the top, but at a bench. Show me a target, from a Ultra Light mtn style factory rifle, shootin FACTORY ammo, group like this. Not too bad for a 9 lugger... Top it! Laffin....
-
Positives: Smooth, crisp, adjustable trigger. Smooth cycling bolt. About 1 lb lighter then comparable rifles for the money. Great ergonomics (I love the slight palm swell on my T3 25-06). Accurate (getting 1.5" groups at 200 yards with 117 Sierra Gamekings).
Negatives: Seems to rust easier then other blued guns (I've even heard the stainless has). Something to definitely keep up on. Cheap plastic shroud (haven't had a problem with it lugging it around 2 years now). The plastic mag does not bother me, I actually like it, seems to lock up better than my Rem's or other mag fed guns. One last negative for me, that I haven't seen mentioned, is the small loading/ejection port. It makes it tough for single feeding rounds. You learn to over-come it.
I'll keep mine, for a cheap gun and lightweight, it'll fill my niche for hike in muley's, and a great starter gun for my wife or kids.
-
dang 257_wby.....not bad shootin for a boat anchor.
-
Oughtta see the bone pile that boat anchor has accrued over the years....grin
-
:)nice group, I will try to round up a picture or two. I see you are close, in Chehalis. Tell you what I'll do, You grab your favorite 3 mark5s, I'll grab 3 POS tikkas T3lites,with POS mounts and a POS Leupold scope in the POS stocks with POS magazines, and factory ammo. You can do anything you want to your Mark5s to make them shoot well and any hand loads you tailor.
the tikkas I'll bring are factory stock, stock rings with no work what so ever done. We meet a a range or anywhere legal to shoot. You do all the shooting. I'll trust you to be honest and shoot both to your best ability.
If the Tikkas do not average better group than your Mark5s I'll buy lunch or dinner, what ever.
Carl
-
I got out to 600 yards at my place with a good bench. Feel free to hang some kill pics while your digging for your "group" pics. LOL. Keep buying your Tikkas Carl, for my $$ I'll roll with REAL Sako's or Weatherby's. BTW, I'm not a cheap date. grin....
-
what is the difference between the Sako and tikka? .....same manufacturer and same barrels as far as what i've heard, just that the tikka has the pos plastic parts.
-
:)don't give up on me , I have one pic in photo bucket, working on 2 more. I'll get them in and post. if you ever read any of my posts you know pics kick my ass every time, I have the pics and they are coming if I have to mail them to Falfire to get them on. I went to the weatherby site today, I had no idea they cost that much now. :yike:
What do animal shots have to do with this?

Carl
Hmm, what does animal killin have to do with this? OK, feel free to go through all posts on this thread, and show ME where I said tikka's were not accurate? Or better yet, that Weatherby's were more accurate? I'm waiting? Matter of fact, I think I gave them Kudos for accuracy. As you can see, my little 257 shoots, haven't seen a Tikka shoot that good yet, but about everyone has been sub MOA.
Their prices aren't real world on their web site, take 3-4 bills off if you shop around. The tikka I sold KillBilly was my varmit gun, found a 240 Ultra Lightweight at cabelas I couldn't live without, so I gave it the boot.
Kill pics? Paper is cool and all, builds confidence, but killin is where its at for me. Been alot of blood shed with that POS, good for nothin 9 lugger.Too each his own Carl, I was asked what I thought, I responded, and I'll tell it how I feel again. Later

Well this the best I can do pic wise right now, I think?? you can wander around and see some animals too, and a few great harleys.
Some day I will figure out how to do pics, I been working at this for over an hour.
If you are talking about amounts of game killed considering I had over 20 years experience before you were born is all the info I need.
-
Those ain't bad, nothin like the nine lugger group though. Looks like some salmon river bear huh? Think I've seen those pics at DJ's before.
With that much more experience, you surely have a bunch of honker blacktails? Still waiting for you to show my quote about "Weatherby rifles are soo much more accurate that Tikkas."
Nice Harley's too. Later

:)I don't know what DJ's is, I cant see that I ever said that you said, LOL :) "Still waiting for you to show my quote about "Weatherby rifles are soo much more accurate that Tikkas" I cant find where I ever said that. and last, Nope aint the Salmon.
-
DJ's= Dave Jones. Looks eerily familiar....
-
:)OK Dave is who made my rug, he said it was the largest he had ever done, 7'2", made my Brother mad as his was 7' even. Thats metheany creek. My bros bro-in-law, John, Tom my bro, a kid named Shawn I think, two brothers I dont remember the name, and me all got bears in one evening hunt. no, thats wrong John got his the first night.
Did not move over here from the east side until 1969 , grew up hunting pheasants there were lots then around Moseslake, hunted up around Spokane for deer, still went there did not hunt blacktail too much except for a few quickee hunts until probably 75 or 76. From 76 thru 82 I got to hunt Wash. Ore. Mont and Idaho every fall, lots of big game.
Something I never thought of before I don't have one pic of my Grandpa, Dad, Uncles, brothers, friends with any animals, or target pics either, My Grandpa had a few horns nailed to the side of the wood shed no one had any mounted heads or anything, only thing I ever had done was this bear, half the time I'd like to get rid of it, pics of me I found 2 with coyotes, 1 with an elk and a couple with bears, and a couple with turkeys.
Guess we aren't big on pics or mounts. Those groups are just fine, over the truck hood or of off a card table, cheap factory ammo with brand new all the guns and still on the first box of ammo. no tweaks no hand loads worked up.

Any Finnish rifle ! Preferably a Finnish Mosin-Nagant.

Top Picture
Tikka T3 Lite in 300 Win Mag-
Muzzle Brake for $180
Bottom Picture
30-378 Weatherby Accumark
Trigger Job $60
Glass Bed $60
Both are excellent shooters. The Weatherby was about 3 times the money. The Tikka is going with me on the high hunt this year.
-
nice groups!
-
I have never heard of a multi-lug bolt gun (more than 2 lug) worth owning.
Carl :chuckle:
Ummm how about Sako TRG-S It is a 3 lug bolt. I own one, in .338wm and love it, it shoots very very well. Bolt glides like it is coated in butter. Bad thing? Mags are 80.00 ea. for extras, typical of Sako accessories and parts. Kinda like owning a Ferrari. But then, has anyone priced Browning replacement mags? Pre 81 BLRs run about 80 bucks too. Of course I also own a howa that shoots the lights out too.. dime size groups at 200 yds. That said, my next rifle will probably be a Tikka. Why? I like diversity, at least in my firearms.
-
For a $500 to $600 price range rifle I could not be happier with mine, a left handed T3 Lite in 270 WIN. Well I guess I could be a little bit happier - I wish I had gotten the 270 WSM version instead. I had the choice and since I already had dies for the 270 WIN, I chose to stick with that caliber.
I notice that my T3 barrel is slower than my M700 barrel by 75 to 100 fps. However the Tikka out shoots the Rem any day - every time. Cold barrel the 1st 2 shots ALWAYS TOUCH each other and the 3rd never has more than 1/4" of paper between it and first two shot cluster.
The Tikka is not sexy in appearance, plain and simply it is just a down and dirty killing machine.
Out to 500 yds I would never think twice about dropping the hammer on something of interest. 600 yds - I would think twice and then drop the hammer.
Just my :twocents:

Sounds like my ex wives!!!!! :chuckle: :chuckle: :chuckle:

I have the 300WSM. Kicked bad when I got it, but put on a limbsaver recoil pad and it is great. The factory pad is just rubber coated solid plastic.
I just put on a dednutz set of scope rings. Much more stable than factory rings.
-
I've had two sets fail. One off a 300WSM & the other off a 338 Federal. The post that goes into the top of your barrel came out thru the side of the base on both of them!
-
I have the Tikka in .270 and .22-250. I like the gun. Shot one in the .300wsm. It kicks fairly well. I picked up a lead sled for siting it in.
-
I bought a t3 last year for my son , we shoot 180 fusion factory loads in 300wsm . set 1.5 hi at 100yards . we put lp rings and scope on it. shoots rock solid . shot a yot at 345 yards held top of back and hammered him.. i would be real confident out to 300 any day with it. Also have a sako trg in 300-378 wb shoots awsome , not happy with the blueing but I don't worry about scraches either. coach.
-
My dad and i both have a tikka 300wsm and love em! I also have one in a 22-250 and its a tack driver.
-
Bookworm can you explain more?? there is no hole in the side of the base, there is no base, but I assume you mean the receiver??? The front mount has a post that fits into the top of the receiver, a very loose fit, I really see no reason for the post at all. There is no way recoil tore thru the reciever so you must mean the post broke? Thanks
Carl
-
The post came out thru the side of the basemount/ring. The post does fit loosely into the receiver but it didn't affect that part of the scope mounting hardware.
-
that suck's i bought a stainless 270 wsm friday. put the new variable 3 3.5 x 10 x 50 weird looking leupold on it. guy talked me into the Tikka ring's i had warne's to put on he said i would save money. Rick
-
get your self some burris duel dove tail rings and bases, they make them for tikka's its what i have on my 300. you could pull a truck with those things, wicked strong

I have used weaver bases on my three Tikkas primarily because they provide additional height for larger diameter scopes.
The reason for the stud in the Tikka rings is because the .22 style mount machined into the receiver does not have the required material to machine a groove for proper ring location. That's what the guys at Berretta told me.... anyway, I like my 3 Tikkas very much and will stick with them.
-
I am sorry but without a pic I just can't buy this story, go look at your tikka and tell me how that can happen.
Carl

going in to cabelas today. get some warne ring's just to be safe.i'm had alot of gun's and by far tikkas. are the best for the price.alway's accurate. for fancy gun i like the kimber. need to get a extra clip to. Rick
