So after asking for some guidance in my other thread glass or call I headed out this morning with a fly by the seat of my pants and see what happens plan. Well walked about a mile behind a decommissioned road to a little logging landing and looked around. Visibility was horrible and I wanted to see as much of the area this weekend as possible so I decided against sitting around and started to head back to the truck when I remembered the call in my pocket. I hunkered down in a little clump of trees on the edge of the landing and called for about fifteen minutes, blowing into the call for a half minute or so then stopping for a half minute. As I suspected I saw and heard nothing.
As I got up to leave I heard a huff at me and froze. About five seconds later I see a bear go crashing back into the timber from.the very edge of the brushy opening surrounding the landing. Oh my was that exciting. No chance at a shot but I'm still jazzed about it. I'm now 100% on calling in bears.... But let's chalk that up to dumb luck :chuckle:
Heres where I wouldn't mind some guidance. I'm assuming the bear was there for a little while trying to scope out what was going on instead of bursting right out into the open? Next time should I try to set up in the timber near the opening, a hundred yards away from the opening, or would a more competent caller have got that bear all riled up and he would have charged right in if he hadn't been wondering what the heck that noise was?
Do you guys typically give it a few minutes after you "give up" calling to see if anything is still coming or do they lose interest when the noise stops?
I'm not in love with this area as there seems to be a parade of dirt bikes, SxS and 4runmers but I want to keep after calling that was fantastic. Thanks for the help in my other thread and if any of you can pass on any advice thanks for that too!

Again....tagging to see what others have to say. Last week me an my son had an almost identical situation but never saw the bear. it was within 40 yards but we needed it to hit the old logging road for us to see it. We had about 80 yards either way down the road we could have shot..... Came in silent and didn't announce itself till we had gone silent for about 5 minutes.
My son was jazzed (he turns 12 this month) so the next couple stops required us to call. Nothing showed on those two calling set ups.

That's awesome for you and your boy! I've got a trip with my two oldest set for next weekend. I hope I can replicate it with them.
The other thing I thought about is that I was there for probably ten minutes or so before I started calling. Does waiting a bit and letting things settle down matter at all?
-
Don't know what others will say and or do but even when I calling the smaller predators I give it a few minutes for things to settle down before I start any calling sequences

I do the same. With coyotes and bobcats I spray the area with fox urine or a good lure and give it time to blow around.
-
Is a lure like that effective or legal for bear?

I would assume it falls under baiting

Lure is illegal for bears. Urine is questionable? Attracts bears? Covers your scent which is good.
-
Yeah, I would think a cover sent is OK as long as it is not an attractant. Don't spray yourself down with bacon grease.....LOL, That would be illegal.
Maybe @bigtex could clarify??

[ 2019 c 226 § 2; 2005 c 1
subsection 1D talks about "baiting" bears. If you're willing to go to court and fight your "cover" scent is not an attractant if some law jockey :llam: writes you a ticket for using/possessing it do your thing. Once again i go back to when we taught hunter Ed and a section of the class was to have a fish & wildlife officer come in and talk to the students. questions were asked and there were some sketchy answers that didn't correlate with the game regs. Made the mistake once of having 2 officers in and they argued for most of the class about what was legal or not. The senior officer finally said, and this is a direct quote, " it's not my job to interpret the law...my job is to write tickets and let the courts sort it out"
-
Wow I despise that attitude the senior officer had And 110% disagree with it.They should know even if you are wrongly accused it often times makes newspapers and can drag someone’s name through the mud enough to lose opportunities or employment because of it. Even if they are exonerated. This is why it is their job to know the law and to do their due diligence and come up with the conclusion that based off the available evidence they do believe that person is guilty without a reasonable doubt.

I would definitely take my advise from your other thread .
And still do both, glass and call .
That bear might of got an education today .
With that said ,I just don't wanna see you waste your season.
Calling is great ,some are better than other at it,maybe you got the secrect touch. I'm not really sure.
Just remember your there to do both.
Some people get caught up with one area, one method, one way of sealing the deal ,they lose oppertunitty in other methods.
No comment on baiting ,law is what it is.
Goodluck

I see no issue with urine, it's not an attractive.
Was someone told otherwise?

Well if your using it to attract or hunt bear .. . ....
I think it might be ........
You can take a 💩 in the woods and if it attracts bear and you hunt bear there ,where you took poop .
According to the law your baiting.
The way I read the law it can be any substance used to attract or hunt bear with.

Better stay away from that chunky peanut butter :chuckle:

Ya I think there is something about that jif that drives those bear crazy. :chuckle: :tung: :chuckle: :chuckle:
Just want to tell KF that.......
Bear Baiting law is stupid, voted in by stupid people.
If I wasn't on the inter web I would tell ya how I really feel about it. Not something I give two 💩 about.
That's just the way it is.

Yeah I pretty much plan on going at it by going into an area and calling on my way out more or less. Kind of a last ditch effort except for a real thick brushy spot by my dad's place I know a bear lives in. I do want to get better at calling though to up my odds so keep the advice and experiences coming fellas.
Also I don't think I'll be using a cover scent or anything of the like. Too much of a grey area and one more thing to manage.
-
As soon as I hit post I realized that thick brushy bear spot is probably still smouldering...... Sad day :ACRY:
