Anyone found any? I found 3 buttons in one of my favorite spots a couple of days ago but that is it. Hopefully this rain gets them going.
-
Nope, never found one before and spent a lot of time looking. Pretty good at finding corals but can't find a chante to save my life

Do you mean now or all the time? If it’s all the time I’ll happily help.

I usually don't find Chanterelles on the east side till Oct. Isn't it a little bit early??
-
I don't find many here til at least late September.
-
We filled an entire Safeway bag yesterday in Forks, WA. Everything was really small buttons. I was surprised they were out.
-
I’ve seen them pop out in August on a few occasions. Haven’t looked yet this year.

Yeah, but Forks is a different part of the world. ;)

I usually find some in July but didn't this year. The 3 buttons i found the other day is the first time I have been out this month looking. Usually I have found a couple of full walmart bags by now. By late september they are everywhere.
-
I usually start looking for the white around Sept. 1 but it is pretty dry.
-
Found a few today and a big lobster.

Lotsa rotten lobsters today.
-
Not finding many.
-
Found about 3lbs Friday!! They’re coming in, you guys finding the lobsters same spots as chanterelles?
-
I have found the lobsters with the chanterelles.
-
Can’t wait to get out looking for them! Going to get a new puppy next weekend than it’s game on!
-
Found a bunch of little ones about a week ago. Mostly small but definitely coming up.
-
There's some out there. Got a bunch a little over two weeks ago east of the Cascade crest, and now I'm starting to see them pop up on the wet side of the Cascades (though I only found two last Friday). It's still quite dry out there, so what you're gonna find now are probably rainbow chanterelles (cantharellus roseocanus). They're likely to be a little more meaty, and their tops will not quite be as bright yellow as the ones that will come up later in the season (cantharellus formosus).
-
Lotsa mushrooms out.

That looks like a helluva dinner right there!
-
Quick question. These have popped up in profusion my chanterelle spot. Would they be lobster? Real meaty with a heavy stalk.

Looks like a chanterelle to me, but I'm no expert.

Not like the chants, and bright red

Lobster 100% It's denser and heavier than most mushrooms huh? I've found really big ones that I could have used as a paperweight!

Oh man, those cauliflower mushrooms are my favorite.

This picture is fall in a nutshell for me. Should be in a calendar somewhere

It's a lobster. When they rot they will become very light and mushy. I like to break the rotten ones up and spread them around. I think doing this has made my lobster spot grow.
-
Thanks all. Guess I'll eat em to sure.

Lotsa mushrooms out.
Beautiful bounty ya got there! What are you typically looking for in the surrounding areas to get a haul like this? I found some good fungi coverage this weekend but nothing edible from what I could tell.
-
Picked lots of chants yesterday, probably 10 lbs or more.

I've been doing this on my property. While I don't have lobsters growing there, they do grow right up the road. I do, however have quite a bit of short stem russula that fruits on my property. Lobsters, as many of you probably already know, are a short stemmed russula (I believe it happens on a few other species as well) that has been parasiticized by the Hypomyces lactifluorum fungus. My hope Is I can introduce the parasitic fungus and turn my short stem russalas to lobsters eventually... Has anyone ever heard of this? or tried it?

Lobster Mac and cheese is how my kids scarf em down! Some of the color comes off in the sauce sometimes too. Good eating!

What're ya'll looking for in surrounding areas to find good spots? I found a lot of mycelium activity but no chantrelles. (east sider though)

I’m on the west side and I have spots I visit every year. I found a tough to get to spot last year and this year I have personally harvested about 70lbs of shrooms from there this year. I look for older forest with lots of fallen logs and starting to rot wood. I find woods that look si militar and walk until I spot a shroom or 2 then mark it. I seem to find spots when I’m looking for grouse. Go grouse hunting and be observant for shrooms while your out there.

Been finding chants everywhere the past few weeks.
Yesterday I found a bunch- started to find some that are getting that slimey, over-mature look to them. And not as many new ones sprouting. Hopefully they're not all on the way out.

My wife picked these 26lbs in about an hour

Yeah right now is the time. I think I’m another week or 2 and they will be mostly rotten and harder to find good ones. Especially if we get a freeze after the rain

They'll continue to grow until we get several freezes in a row. Lower elevations and the coast will see them until December and sometimes, January.

Yeah it’s just I think right now is the prime time. Afterward I spend more time sorting through rotten ones or partially rotten. Most of them right now are perfect. I do agree you can find them for a while longer and oysters and hedgehogs are out too later on. I’ve been searching pretty hard for bears tooth and haven’t found any. I’ve also found less cauliflower this year but that’s prob just me.

I'm not saying they're nice after October. They're usually water-logged and messy. But they do grow in parts of WA and OR until late December and Early Jan, during some years.

Found a huge area of Chanterelles Saturday, many of them look different than I am used not smooth topped but little ridges like another one was growing out of the middle of the main mushroom. Forgot to get pictures of those.
also found 3 bearshead mushrooms. That makes 4 total lifetime :chuckle: Last night we browned up a bunch of it and topped off a burger with it. :)
-
Also found several of these guys that I had never found before, and forgot my mushroom book at home. >:(
Was pretty sure they were hedgehogs but as I had never found them before or identified I ended up just taking a picture and leaving them, in the same area I found more Chanterelles that were kind of slimed from age.
-
Yep that's a hedgehog 100%. Absolutely delicious. I think they have a little bit nuttier tone than a chantrelle. My whole family likes them better!

Also... "find many, before tasting any!" you did the right thing.

I am super careful with shrooms, have stopped by the buyer in trout lake more than once with a sample of something just to be sure along with getting forum and personal advice. Always fun when you can add something to the list of things you know and understand.
-
Hedgehogs are a great choice, as nothing else looks quite like them. On a side note... I'm super jealous of the the bears head. I've only found a hericium family once, which was a lions mane on a maple tree right out in the open at point Defiance Park. All the other mushroom people must know about it, because it's always picked by the time I get to it! Doh!

I was excited to find the one in the picture, it was only my 2nd one. Then found 2 more smaller ones in the next 45 minutes :IBCOOL:
My real goal for the day was to try and find some matsutake which did not happen, might get out again this weekend and try again.
-
I found matsutake for the first time last year. Everything you read about the smell is true. you will know when you find it

Good pick today, sent some corals home with a friend for him to try, came across my first queen bolete but it was real buggy so I left it. Found my first chicken of the woods and a few chants right next to it. Excited to try the chicken!(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20211108/085c93b4c5ae73bf2c0ceedb1539534f.jpg)(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20211108/16387ff2b7a75b1ee216c8a0ab7b71be.jpg)(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20211108/163431644af62b26d2c09fcea3b7db6b.jpg)(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20211108/98853a4b23098ea78125e8953eff9aae.jpg)

I find a lot of these. I’ve all called them goatsbeard.

Found this guy while deer hunting in Idaho today. Now I have to figure out how to get it. It';s 20 ft up that old slick snag and no branches to climb with.

I carry a ladder in my truck on the wetside this time of year.🤣
-
I use a long branch to pry it off and catch it when it falls.
