yeah the archery guys mainly just due to possible access issues. If the roads open up though its game on. Gonna be plenty of elk to shoot at. If I had an archery tag I'd have it in an envelope ready to go back to wdfw but it wouldn't hit the mail until the last secondKeep the faith gents. Lot can change in short order. I had the Goos Prairie Muzzy bull tag when the last fire was in there in ‘17. They opened it just in time for my hunt and ek were all over the fresh burn, ended up being a great huntno pics, didn’t happen!! :chuckle:

I was planning to check 356 on the north/south end since the Nile is currently closed. Well, the closure expanded to most of 356, so now I'm back to square one. Unless miracle happen, I think archery is out. :-(

latest fire lines have it kissing the slopes of Mt Aix, down the canyons from Bismarck and Rattlesnake Peaks.
Major drainages of Dog, Hindoo and Lookout creeks in the wilderness have been burned. Along with Rattlesnake creek on the wilderness side of Timberwolf Mtn.

As terrible as this fire is for anyone in its path (my family included), this is the best thing to happen to this area in my lifetime. Its was as unhealthy as a forest could beAgree totally! Hate to see peoples homes burn but man this area needed this

I agree. There were years and years of deadfall in the wilderness area, and it is only a matter of time before all of that fuel turns into a big fire.

the fire to the southwest, through Cash Prairie to Shellrock, Bismarck, Rattlesnake Peaks will burn until it reaches rockline. Very little fuel at Peak/rock line.

So bummed out. GMU's 356-360 is an area that I've hunted/licensed for elk since 1966. Every year, every season with exception of one college year.

I drew the year Peaches burned to a crisp - lost plans a, b, c and some cams in the blaze but I kept the tag and hunted it and don't regret it for a minute. Looking back, the points would do me no good now, tag numbers continued to crash and points built up so that every year was noticeably worse odds.
I feel for the guys who go from the high of the draw to the disappointment of fire, not to mention anyone who owns stuff threatened by the fire.

I would still wait until the last minute to turn in the Q-Tag. I had the Bethel Q-Tag in 2016 and found lots of big bulls in areas that have not had any fire yet. Going to be a tough call, not knowing if you will ever if ever draw that tag again

I could see the fired cresting the ridge from my house last night. I live 40 miles away in the Wenas. I’m not sure if it was Bethel or what. Was just surprised to see flames torching the ridgeline
Read that the backburning, establishing black lines, started yesterday up on Bethel Ridge. According to Friday eve fire report/review, this will occur all along the top of Bethel, past the Microwave Tower to Cash Prairie.

I'm wondering where the elk will move as the backcountry summer range (William O. Douglas wilderness) continues to burn.
Perhaps west of Bumping Lake area, Indian Creek #1308 or Mosquito Valley (backcountry) or perhaps move over and down toward White Pass>upper Cowlitz/Packwood.
The winter migration to Oak Creek could be very interesting...

Looks like I'm going to return my Q- tag for Bethel archery. Just heard back from the Aschinder fire folks and they said there will be no access north of hwy 12 to the 360 area this month and possibly Oct. Definitely no access from the north as they do cleanup after the fact. FS said possibly no access for up to 9 months. :'(

Tonight I listened to a 3 hour webinar on the fire conservation efforts. Most attending were government officials, some large parcel land owners and.....logging companies. Like Boise Cascade, log salvage companies, lumber mills.
guess what #1 concern was?

I asked in CHAT/Q&A session when the fire interior area, most of GMU-360 & 356, would be reopened due to hunting seasons, permits etc. They couldn't provide an answer.
