Title: Big Buck Series IV
Post by: boneaddict on November 11, 2007, 11:43:34 AM
This guy was in a place I always see a big buck.  Idabooner and I struck out there and I blamed it on the logging in the area.  I saw this buck last year as a five point.  He was more massive last year about about 3 inches less wide.  Interesting trade off.  He was teh 5 point I saw right at dark with the 30 inch longhorn two point in tow last year.  It was too dark for pics then, and almost this time.  I parked on him and waited for it to get more light.  It didn't much.  I took some pics with two different cameras.  The monopod just didn't cut it, but I had time to set up the tripod.  Then set the timer at 2 seconds to remove the shake from touching the camera.  This guy was dangerously close to the Idaho line.  There are enough loggers packin' that he better duck.  I watched him for a long time, then finally pulled myself away to look for bigger bucks.  I should have spent all day on him.  I went along and came back.  He had moved about 1000 yards up the hill and was going ape nuts with two hot does and a decent 4 point that had accidentally joined the fray.  I watched for another 20 then headed on.

do you have to have a special permit where your getting the pics, or can you hunt there with a regular tag?

This is with the second camera.  It was literally almost dark when I started shooting with this camera on the tripod.

Very nice work Boneaddict, I hope he keeps dodging the bullet for a few more years, it would be interesting to see how he develops year after year.  Besides we can sure use a lot of his genes.

Being an old horse breeder I'd say he's a little light in the hips but he's got a good back and fair frame.  Ya I know you guys are mostly looking at the head gear, but an old Indian guide told me once, while shaking his head  "All bone no eat".  ;)   LOL

Any thoughts on this guys spread?  Like the last one, I want to hear honest thoughts.  Does he make 30 inches?  I was thinking his frame was about 28-29.  short of thirty.  Its hard to tell.  Last year, he was more impressive, but its not from receeding from age.  Just different grub this year, and he moved it a bit elsewhere.  I've always liked mass more than spread, but when I caught a glimpse of this guy I about ....my pants.

2" passed the ears on the left, 4" passed the ears on the right =28" -my guesstimate. Really fine buck, amazing the photo shoot he let you have, he really seemed oblivious.

I was thinking the same thing huntingfinatic.  At least when I find his sheds. ;)  He wasn't happy to be where he was D-man, but his litte lady held and he wasn't about to leave her.
