Well just screwed one of my rifles.
Trying to take the boy target practice this mourning.
I'm fine,Alot of blowback in my face, the bolt face, ejector plunger screwed, bullet cleared the barrel.
No barrel bulge or noticeable action damage.
Spend an hour prying on the case. I started messing with it while the boy finished shooting.
So just reminder guys ,make sure your rounds are for the right caliber.
Just glad to be able to tell everybody to be careful this season.
Don't learn the hard way.
Rem 700 ,270 is not hitting the deer woods this year.
It's always been a good rifle,and a lucky rifle.
I think I burned up the last of its luck.
I've had it out a few times trying to get it sighted in for the season.
Don't get in a hurry, slow it down, when you got multiple rifles on the tailgate.
-
yikes! glad your ok!
-
It sucks and I feel pretty damm stupid.
I know I should of took a pic after I pounded the bolt open on the tailgate, but it looked like a strait wall cartridge.
And the firing pin still fires, but I believe the bolt face has been stretched larger than a 270,ejector plunger was just gone ,but spring still there, flash hole on the case looked about three or 4 times the normal size.
-
So where's the 30 cal bullet? Lodged in the throat of the barrel.

His first post said it cleared the barrel.

My gawd, glad you are ok. I just recently bought some .243 Ammo and it was loaded with .308 win! Luckily for me the bolt wouldn’t close! Lesson learned for me I will look at the numbers on the primer pocket from now on
-
We had a guy on our range that attempted to shoot a 300 BLK in a .223 barrel. It made it half way down it looked like a stubby pencil.
-
How in the heck did a .30cal bullet make it through a .270 barrel?
-
Yipes! Glad you’re ok. Damn…

Lots and lots of pressure. :bfg:

Thank you for sharing.
Your safety reminder is definitely worthwhile.

Thanks guys for not ripping my head off here on HW.
There is no excuse for poor firearm handling.
And you always think "that's not gonna happen to me"
No way to call back a bullet. After you send it,it's gone.
I work Graveyard, and no sleep, and just getting in a hurry to try and get things done.
At the end of the day,it's my bad,and no excuse for it.
Wishing everybody luck this season, remember keep it a safe season.

Holy cow man! I have accidentally grabbed rounds out of the pickup door and went to throw them in a bulk bag of .308 and suddenly thought.... Were those even .308? Went back to the bag and found a few right away that were 30-06... Dig for all six of the ones I threw in and felt damn lucky for double checking. Glad your alright. :yike:
-
.308 will also fire in a 7mm mag. Also not good; don't ask how know. Only one caliber on the bench ever since . Destroyed an imperial grade husqvarna.
-
I am sort of particular about ammo storage when shooting. Had a feed cover detonate on an M2 .50 in a critical moment. Small scar on the chin serves as reminder.
-
Im so glad ive standardized my cartridges...
Glad your safe andnlifed to tell the tale!

My kids were up shooting once with some high school friends. One of the friends was complaining his rifle was acting weird and wasn't hitting paper. My boys found that he was shooting 308's in a 30.06. The kid didn't even notice when he ejected the cartridges that they were now straight wall cartridges..lol
I thought that was bad, but shooting a 308 through a 270 would be in a league of its own. Glad your okay, guns can be repaired.
-
A friend of mine had a 7mm mag rebarrelled. Go to the range with him to sight in. First shot blew all sorts of debris out of the breach. Spent shell wouldn't extract, but the bolt opened. Found a VERY enlarged 270 case once we tapped it out.
-
Glad your OK,
You might think about getting it checked out before shooting it again... stress cracks cant be seen and it could be good for a while and then cut loose later.
Just my :twocents:
-
I was shooting a USPSA match one time and one of the older guys was having miss fires and when it did fire (several times) it sounded really weird. I walked over and picked some of his brass up and it was kinda pooched out... he got his guns mixed up and was shooting 9mm for his G17 though his G22 .40cal :chuckle:
-
Was on the shooting bench about a month ago with a Mod 70 FWT in 257AI and a Howa Alpine 6.5 CM. Was working up loads for the CM and fireforming brass for the 257AI, caught myself as I was closing the bolt, 6.5 CM in the 257AI. Could have been catastrophic like your situation. 270 Win does go bang through a 7mm Mag, kind of hair raising, that was about 30 years ago. Definitely have to watch what we are doing on the bench and in the field, glad you are ok.

I’ve seen this! It just so happens that SAAMI 308 ogive will headspace on 270 shoulder in the chamber! A guy I know put a 308 through a Winchester M70 in 270. Good thing he was using soft jacketed bullets rather than copper. Believe it or not, no damage to the rifle. The case just turned into 308 super Improved. And...the bullet hit within 2 inches of his group.
-
That's why one gun and ammo for that gun on the table at a time.
People get killed every year because of screw ups like that.
Good thing no one got injured or killed.
Hundreds of guns a year get trashed because of not paying attention to the task at hand.

Yup it was a 30 cal 150 gr hot cor ,traditional cup/lead core bullet. And a long jump between the COL difference probably help . I do believe the rifle is still good ,bolt needs some fixing or a new one.
Still very stupid on my part, and by no means proud of it ,that's for sure. Rifle was given to me by my parents.
And I've killed some of my biggest bucks with it ,so it was or is pretty special to me. I haven't had the heart to tell my folks I screwed it up like that. They would probably buy me a new one ,but that just doesn't feel right to me.
So I was more devastated about the rifle more than anything.
Yes I have changed some habits at the range and also reloading as well as a result.
-
It happens, glad you walked away from it. I sure would be curious as to the velocity of that shot.

I have crono my 308 rounds before ,2830 fps is a five shot average. My ar-10 with the same loads are 2690.
48 grain of blc-2 ,which is max in Hodgdon reloading book.
Sometimes I load them with a grain less.47 grain cause I have a two 308 rifles and one shoots better with a grain less.
So ya it should of been right around 2800 or just above on velocity.
That's just off the top of my head ,I would have to look in my data log on my reloading bench .
-
My buddy and I were getting ready for deer season years ago, he grabbed one of my .308 rounds accidentally and shot it in his .30-06. I still have the piece of brass by my reloading bench, I’ll try to remember to add the pic of it later. Primer barely stayed in the primer pocket, it’s hanging on by a thread
-
Here she be. .308 fired out of a 30-06
-
I'm so glad this didn't end tragically. Expensive lesson learned for sure.
-
Always check the caliber. Don't let this happen to you!
-
Here she be. .308 fired out of a 30-06
That's exactly what my casing looked like .....
Except mine was stuck in the bolt face, like brass swelled into the bolt face and would come off the bolt.
Primer was just gone.
I just got home from shooting today.
That rifle in my cabinet is a constantly reminds me to check.
I only had one rifle and one shotgun today,so 12 GA doesn't fit in Alot of rifles .
Gonna try to get a new bolt this spring and take the rifle to a gun Smith ,have the bore checked, head space, and all that and get it up and running. Got 20 reloads loaded that never got tested that day. But it's looking like about 300 just for a new bolt, then who knows what the rest will cost.
-
Yes I made the mistake once it tore me up pretty good ruined the best hunting rifle I ever owned 😭 still pissed at myself 3yrs ago
-
You have to listen to that little voice in the back of your mind. Whether you're in a hurry cause its getting dark or your mind is on something else. You have to remind yourself that this is like a math test, but get one wrong and you might lose a finger or an eye.
Worst I have done is fired a 7 Rem Mag in a 7STW.
-
I've seen .270 win fired through a 30-06...persons rifle wasn't hurt to my knowledge.

I bought a bunch of fired .270 brass at a garage sale a while back, found several with necks blown out to .30 caliber!

I was hoping this topic would be over.
I have a feeling I'm not gonna live this one down on HW anyway.
Have a Merry Christmas.
Be thankful for what ya got.
