Title: Aftermarket backup cameras?
Post by: KopperBuck on October 14, 2021, 01:23:19 PM
Just bought a new head unit for our Dodge. It was completely stock, and finally bit the dust. The unit I purchased has camera capabilities now.

Tailgate isn't an option, are the license plate ones worth a rip? Better brand than other?

I'm also looking at a stand alone possibly for hooking up our goosenecks. I'm tall enough I can see it ok, but my wife hates hooking up by herself. I'm just not real sure on placement. Even a flush mount on the toolbox would be too dangerous. Maybe hanging on the bottom side of the headache rack? How close would I really need to be to make it effective?

I am on my second $35 license plate camera from amazon.  The first one lasted 2 years, this one is on year 2.  If I have to replace them every year for $35, I am ok with that.
I would recommend the wired option and not the wireless.  With your truck (mine is a long box) the distance from the camera to the head unit is a little far to get a clear picture all the time.  The 2nd one I bought, after the 1st (wireless) one died, is wired to the camera on the plate.  Clear crisp picture.  Works like a freaking charm.

edit:  they increased the price some, but I still think it's a great deal for what you get.

I'll need to get the name of mine, it's been great. Put it on my 2014 2500HD in 2015 and never an issue.

A few years back had Car Toys in Burlington put a new CD player in my 99 Dodge and it came with a backup camera. Seemed to work ok (dont't remember the brand name) used it about three years before I sold the truck and it was still working fine. The factory one I have on my truck now (17 Ram) is junk! have to slam the tailgate a couple times to get it working right!

Checked my system, it's a Yada (BT53872M-2) Matte Black Digital Wireless Backup Camera with 3.5" Dash Monitor. About $50 from Amazon. It's been working great for 7 years, hard wired into backup lights.

I have yada as well. Works like it is suppose too. Not sure how long I’ve had it. It’s at least 3-5 years no problems.

Would those work from inside a horse trailer? Just to keep an eye on things back there when driving...

Yes the Yada would work if you can supply power to the camera. Standard installation the camera gets power when the backup lights come on.

I’ll echo 92xj on the wireless. I had one on a short bed pickup once and it didn’t work. Just junk.
