Title: Clockum rifle season
Post by: fuzznuts on October 15, 2021, 07:14:56 AM
Hello all,

I usually hunt the archery season for elk but my fourteen year old son wanted to try and get an elk with his rifle this year. Was hoping someone could tell me how crowded the the clockum is during this hunt , can you get to the top or snow too deep, and have elk moved lower by November? Thanks for any info -Fuzz

I would say that is one of the hardest hit units for elk during rifle. Get off the roads a couple hundred yards and you won't see half the people hunting.  Snow shouldn't be an issue you might get a little dusting. Wear your orange and have fun.

Going to be completely crazy this year in the colockum with the Nile and bumping area closed to access this due to fires.

Wear lots of orange and carry a ATV orange flag on a 5 foot pole. Have fun and be safe.

Yes, it will be crowded like it was couple years back from the fires down there. BUT, just get away from the roads it’ll be far less people. Good luck and enjoy the time with your son!!

All the experts say get away from the roads which tough in the colockum. The true secret find a spot and be patient let the road hunters and other brush beater push them to you. It usually will take two or three hours for them to get the elk moving. Be careful on the true spike that’s the hardest part. Good luck to you and your son and enjoy your time together.

Well, we call it the pumpkin patch for a good reason. There are a lot of hunters up there, both on and off the road. We typically see elk but many times they will pick up and move miles away to another area. Then we don't see anything for days. Unless you have a special tags you can only hunt the spikes. Many a time the spikes run across the open areas escorted and surrounded by cows. This will be an opportunity for your son to learn about persistence in the face of diminishing odds. Best of luck to you both. I'm going again this year.
