Title: Nooksak Unit ?
Post by: Webfoot on May 03, 2009, 07:12:01 PM
Can anyone tell me about the property ownership in the Nooksak?
Is it mostly public such as Forest Service or DNR? Or is it timber company owned and if so do they allow hunting? Or is it mostly private and off limits?
Thinking about maybe putting in for an elk tag and thought I should do some research first.

Thanks
John

Webfoot, I can answer that question for you, a large portion of that property is owned by Sierra pacific, with the bordering area's DNR and forest service.  The whole area is gated with foot travel or by horses.  If you do draw the tag, in the past keys were issused by Sierra to access there land.

do a search on here...you'll get lots of research done that way.

Thanks Dave and Jackelope.
Now I just gotta dig around and find out which areas hold elk. Looks like a big unit with a lot of diversity.
Anyone care to elaborate on the quality of bulls in the area? If not I understand.

Thanks
John

There are no good bulls in the Nooksack unit.
Exactly?  I guess the couple taken this last year were flukes?   :yike: Or you have a grander version of a "good" bull than most of us.... shhhhhh no bulls there so don't put in for that tag?   ;)

NWWABOWHUNTER brings up a concern here on these type of posts. I've noticed that when someone asks questions about a hunting unit 99.9 % of the time guys try and help. But there almost always is someone who seemingly tries to steer them away from said unit. Why ? We're all in this together. Anyway, I hope that this isn't the case. I haven't been a member for very long and I can't tell you how much I enjoy this site and how much I've learned about other parts of our state. Keep it coming all.

You will find the there is always a local who makes a comment like that in the futile hope of reducing the number of applicants in their "home" unit.  Honestly though, the only time you actually read comments like that are on units where very little knowledge of Washington state would let you know that this is not in fact true.  Kind of like when someone says there are no good bulls in the Dayton or Weneha units.  The secret of the Nooksack herd has been out since last year.  Anyone who actually gets steered away from applying merely because one person sarcastically comments that there are no good bulls in that unit (99% of the time) is just not putting any simple research using the search engine of this site.  There have been at least 10 people posting in the past month that the Nooksack is the best unit in Western WA and that is completely true.  Also, some research from the hunters who had the tag last year will reveal pictures with proof that the Nooksack is an awesome unit (arguably the best in the state).  So in response to your comments - I am not trying to steer anyone away, merely making a sarcastic comment.

All I have to say is if you do some research on this website I believe you can come with your answer. Remember it is what you put into, is what you will get out of it. Good luck to all this year. :hello:

I for a fact do know what is there,  I used to hunt there muzzleloader from the early 80's till they closed it,  the late January hunt and took some nice elk out of there.  I knew it was a sarcastic comment,  just pulling your chain a little too.... of course if I planned on western elk,  then I would be trying to get the coveted tag or two they are giving out for archers....

Thanks everyone for the replies.
Jake there are two tags you can have one. lol.
I take it the unit must have been closed for sometime and then opened for permit.
When did this happen?

i don't think it's anywhere near the best unit in the state...thats my opinion i guess, take it for what it's worth.

I used to have a fairly good deer area...used too being the key word. Someone posted it on a website such as this and the next year there were forty new hunters in a 100 acre area. Nine small bucks were killed on opening day and the pressure has increased since then. I had hunted this area for 10 years and harvested 5 good buck, some years passing up twenty+ smaller bucks per year.

Any hunter can get as much information needed from the web without asking hunters to share hunting areas publically. Notellum creek should be the standard answer on a public forum, the fishing and hunting news does a good enough job destroying hunts as it is.

The chase is the hunt and the chase lasts all year, I spend mega hours researching hunting grounds and will not post in public the fruit of my labor...sorry.

Guess I would be the .01%

While I respect your opinion and will agree with public hunting grounds, I feel differently about special permit units like the Nooksack.  If someone is lucky enough to get drawn in a special unit, I would wish them the best and offer any advice that I could.  These are units that a lot of people (most of us) would love to hunt, but will never be lucky enough to draw, so it really is not inviting others into your private year-in-year-out hunting grounds.  I would feel proud and honored to help someone tag out in an area I have extra knowledge of.

I have a bad habit of thread jacking....I would help with a draw unit as well.....If I could ever draw a good tag :bash: maybe I would know some details.
I have seen many public area requests on the forum and his post was generalized.

What is so wrong with steering someone away from putting in for a certain tag.  I think that putting in for a tag has a slight form of competition to it and personally i want the best chances i can get to get one.  I have now put in for elk for 10 years of my life and waited patiently, why the hell would i post something on how awesome the units i put for are and possible turn more people on to them.  But i think that after the draw is done and someone draws a tag then by all means help the guy (or gal) out.  I personally would help anyone out AFTER they have drawn a tag but why on earth would anyone tell and brag about which tags are the best to put in for.

Heck man there isn't a lot of secrets out there, this isn't 1965.  Sure some are better than others (limited tags,etc...) it could all be good if you just do some of your own research (besides just posting....where are the elk in ???Unit???) and get off away from the road.

Just my opinion.

I do not expect anyone to give up there honeyholes,  and I can see why some might want to steer people away from putting in for a certain area.  Not that I don't want to draw that big bull tag in a great area myself,  but am willing to help out others on here.  Believe me I am as competitive as anyone else,  and am hoping like hell my group draws the bull tags we applied for...  good luck to all who have applied and hope my tags are drawn just before yours....  :IBCOOL:

Great thread of hi jack threads...

If you do not want to post anything then do NOT.   No one is putting a gun to your head.   If someone wants to share let them... The first amendment gives people the right to post what ever they want.  If you do not want to read it then block it.  If it is going to up set you.  Do not read it.  I am sure no one is pointing a gun to your head to read it.  So don't...   Seems pretty simple to me!!!

You are implying etiquette to the site.   That is not what was posted...  If you read the high jacked thread, the author was looking for information about the Nooksak unit.  All I am saying is if it is going to up set you do NOT read it.  Heck, it is a unit which will take a long time to get drawn.   It is NO secret as others have posted.    So block the thread if it upsets you and do not read.   One thing you need to understand about the internet…  Anyone can post anything.   If you do not like it get off it.

I can usually see the sarcasm in the posts that say "no big elk here don't apply", but if somebody is going to try and honestly steer somebody away from applying for a tag, then that is pretty lame, and I hope not what this site is about. If you don't want the person to apply for "your" unit, don't lie to them, just keep it to yourself.  :twocents:

Have yet to draw a tag but being that I live amidst the Nooksack herd, get the opportunity to watch them year round.  We have a couple trail cams up almost year round.  There are some very nice elk in the general area.  Good luck to all that are lucky enough to draw a tag and hunt this area.
