Title: Super Duty transmission issues
Post by: RugerRay on November 24, 2021, 02:23:47 PM
I have a 2014 Ford F250 6.2 gasser that seems to be having some shifting issues, especially when it's cold. Truck shifts into Drive just fine, but once you start to accelerate it automatically jumps from 1st gear to 5th and stalls out. The truck will slowly start to move, and will virtually slam back into 1st and start driving like normal. Once you are moving down the road it shifts nice and smooth through all the gears, even when getting up to highway speeds. I just noticed over the weekend that it is not engaging the front axle while in 4 high, or 4 low. I can see the front driveline spinning, but tires do not engage. Are these issues related? Any input would be much appreciated.

Sounds like your transfer case is working, maybe the vacuum system to lock your hubs is not working. Try manually locking the hubs and check to see if the front wheel starts working.

 No clue on the shifting.

:yeah: Those have a vacuum seal in the hub that are a popular item. That should have no bearing on the shifting.  :twocents:

I tried manually locking the hubs with no luck as well as in auto.

Start with the simple. How many miles, when was the last fluid change.  Was the change a drain and fill or a pan drop filter change?
Is it chipped?  Do you tow?  Do you have gauges.  Is the fluid nice and pink?  Does the fluid have even the slightest hint of burnt smell.

Front hubs.  Were you able to manually rotate the dial completely to the locked position?  If so it is time to pull the hubs off and check the splines.  Earlier years used freaking nylon splines!!  Not sure about the 2014.

Thanks for chiming in MR5x5. Truck has 155,000 miles. I've actually only owned it for about 3 months. Of course it didn't have any of these issues when I took it out for a test drive. Fluid looks good, and I'm not quite sure when it was last changed. The wife tows a couple horses with it every weekend, which is only about 6,000 pounds with trailer. No chip or gauges installed on truck. It's bone stock. I can easily rotate the hubs all the way into the lock position without resistance. I should have time this weekend to pull the hubs out and look at the splines. Thank you for the tip.

Anytime RR.
If the fluid is clean and at the right level I'm hard pressed to say change it out at this point.
Have you had it on a scanner capable of pulling transmission codes?  This is where I'd go next.

I’ve had a similar issue with a 2014 F250 power stroke. It shifts from 3rd to 4th… 4th is nonexistent it slams back into 3rd then limps into 5th.

Could be excessive build up of metal deposits on the gear solenoids which causes erratic shifting, can even put it in park and grenade the trans.  Was a recall on 2011-2013 F150's with the 6R140.  Same trans basically in the super duties.  The fix if that's the case is a different solenoid valve seal, plus fluid and filter change.  Trans fluid change is every 65,000 miles I believe.

My father in law has a capable scanner that I can grab this weekend. Good idea.

Thank you for the tip on the solenoids. I will definitely look into that as well.
