-
Is it better to be innthe waiting room or bum rush the door....... :chuckle:

-
I'm waiting for all the early birds to get out of the way...to many horror stories last year of sitting in the waiting room for hours and getting kicked out at checkout...

My top unit's took a while to sell out last year anyway.

-
15,368!!!!!!! I went the waiting room route.  We will see what happens. It tells me I can close the page and not lose my spot, but I don't trust that for a second.

I don't think for how many are left, but they do post sell-outs on the waiting page.
-

Its live on Fox news. They have a unit tracker kinda like the presidential elections.... :chuckle:

Actually it just started showing sold out units in the waiting room.
-
Only the first 1000 processed and already a couple elk units sold out.  Not looking good............

I'd say you're doing pretty good!
-
I bailed last year when I saw 7000 - turns out thats a good number - hehe.  Hanging in until I see my units sold out this year.   Haven't heard of anyone below 5000 - ???

-
What's this all about? I'm lost, as usual.

It’s worse than a mess. But, for Idaho it’s probably awesome. They get their Christmas bonus…. Tags sold out!
-
Guess I won't complain about 39xx.  Buddy who logged on before me has 6xxx.

-
Out of these 12,548 people ahead of me, I'm just hoping that 12,543 of them are strictly deer hunters     :IBCOOL:

 Nonresident Elk PIONEER B
 Nonresident Elk SMOKY-BENNETT B
 Nonresident Regular Deer 21
 Nonresident White-tailed Deer 36A

This is worse than last year ..

Like opening a hot dog stand at a weight loss convention... someone's guna get hurt...

Won't be long before it goes to draw only.
-
Can you purchase Deer & Elk at same time or have to go back into virtual waiting room for other tag ?

Buddy said 2/3 of elk tags already gone in one of the biggest zones so not looking good.......

Non Resident Disabled Vet elk tags are all gone.  Was able to get a WT deer tag.

-
Last year I went with the phone call and stayed on the line. Big mistake, lost the call 35 minutes in. Then got in the waiting room down 12,500 and called back to get in the call back line. About 3 hours of panic. I had all but given up, about noon I walked by and wiggled the mouse. The screen came alive and read you are up. Hit buy now at #89 left. About 15 minutes later I got the phone call from IF&G. Not one of the most popular but it works. The elk gods were good this year. Got out of the room at # 751   with less than a 15 minute wait!

-

All elk & deer DAV tags are sold out. Just picked up a white-tailed deer. Not terribly happy but have a tag for next year. There's always the controlled draws. Good luck to those still waiting.

-
Picked up an elk tag. $1000 hurts.

I may pickup a deer tag later if anything is laying around
-
I got my tag, but my buddies are still way back in the line. This system is stupid.

You couldnt get both at same time ?
-
Wow, been waiting all morning.. finally said, "it's your turn, you're being re-directed" and then kicked me off immediately and said "session timed out"... awesome. Same crap different year I guess

-
if you dont get a tag, can you apply for a controlled hunt, or do you have to have the tag in order to apply?, i know you have to have a license, in order to apply

-

Just a license.  It is just a little easier to apply with a backup OTC hunt in your pocket, vs paying them $185 for a license and only a small chance to draw a tag.
-
What's left....attached below, I was 6524. Screenshot quantities of each tag...

We were hoping for a DAV elk tag this year. Sold out.  But once in there I checked and there are still a crap load of "B" tags left in some good areas.  "A" tags are getting scarce.

 Good luck everyone!

I got my elk zone.  90 some tags left and my buddies have 5k people to go.

-
I was at 5000 waited for only an hour. I was queued to go to webpage.

Then it went blank. I'm now in the 25000

-
We’ll got a tag, not the one I wanted though.

-
Wanted Salmon B but they were out - walked away with an Elk City B tag and a GMU 1 deer tag.  Not bad for being #14000 or whatever.  Good luck all!

No suprise about Lolo. I don’t think there’s an elk left in that unit. Best not to get that tag if anyone is desperate….

I hunted Lolo back in 2018 and had a screaming match with a very large bull.  We just couldn't get him to come in through the brush for a shot.  Estimated he hung up at about 200 yards. There's elk there.  But they're buried deep.  :)

Just checked my receipt $21.04 in Convenience fees.  Not sure I would call this new service a convenience..... >:(

-
				It's very convenient... for them

-
You know normally as a resident I like to buy my sportsman’s package in person at a vendor, but ever since this new system it’s more fun to log in and add to the chaos and fear of the nonres’

-
Got the A tag I wanted after about an hour wait this morning. Unfortunately, my son wasn’t able to log on so sat on hold on the phone for over 4 hours til the call dropped. Eventually tag sold out...same tag was still available for several days last year if my memory serves me right.
Told him we’ll be headed to Colorado (I’ll do Idaho solo if he can’t come as cameraman). It’s a shame as this will be his first year behind the bow.

We’ll make the most of it regardless.
-
I started at about 9900 this morning and after 3 hours finally got in. Was looking at what tags were left when it kicked me out and put me at number 30,000... WTF! I tried logging back out then back in and it kept me at 30,000. Unbelievable. Reminds me of trying to get a multi-season tag this year  :bash: :bash: :bash:

-

this system is total crap. yea im complaining cause I didn't get my way. but im going to do it anyways.  I was logged in at 1030 with 26000th place and every hr was checking  at 230 I had 5000 people in front of me, and over an hr wait, 30 minutes later I logged in and the site wouldn't load, finally got in and I got kicked out and had 8000 people in front of me. finally got in and all unit 6 deer are gone.  I would much rather have a draw and an equal chance of getting a tag. not my fault I was at work trying to earn a living and couldn't log in earlier. am I really going to have to burn a PTO day DEC 1 just to hunt 10 months later.  total joke of a system. rant over  good luck to all that got tags. my only hope now is to draw a controlled hunt. "so your saying there is a chance"

-
Screw all this crap!  What a joke!

-
Seems like they have some issues they haven’t resolved. After seeing this post I logged in and was 15000 in line, my buddy logged in a few minutes prior to me and was 5000. Well I got my tag around 1:30 and my buddy that was 10000 places ahead got nothing as he kept getting booted out of the system until he just gave up.

It's basically already an unorganized draw. You login before 9 am and are assigned a random number. I would rather just have an organized draw. Less stress and won't interfere with work.

This is exactly what I told someone earlier today
-
It needs to go to a draw. Current system is effed. I was number 25000 and change!  Barely got a tag. 3 left when i checked out.
Dad and brothers got screwed. Sold out by the time they got in.
At least in a draw we can apply as a group
-
I got on at 8:30... waited for my number, pulled 11,587... waited 3 more hours, got kicked off, freaked my ass out, logged back on and go one of  my tags... what a roller coaster

-
Not this year. Got a few points built up, it’s a cowboy state hunt for 22.

-
I logged in a few ago and it gave me a 40k number and said the wait could be a couple hours then it just let me in...

Earlier today I was like 12k in line but didn't stick around to wait it out...

The random number assignments are jacked up.
-
I feel lucky. I was 2000’s and my wife 4000’s. Still didnt get our first picks. But got elk and deer for me and a deer tag for my wife.

-
I was number 3100 and my buddy was 4800.  We got the rifle elk hunt in units 33-36.   Christmas came early!!!

I got the deer tag I wanted. I was 5788 when I logged in at 8:30. A buddy logged in 1 minute later and was at 8800. I don’t think it’s a random number. It’s in order when you show up.
-
bro and I logged in just a few minutes apart, and we both got in just a few minutes apart

-
Lots of the deer tags are sold out so don't wait if you are wanting tags.

-
I logged in about 8:45 this morning. At 9am I was assigned #228. Can't really complain and got the tags I wanted.

-
Logged in at 8:35am, got #17,620.  Finally got in at around 1:35pm, was really worried when I had to re-enter my log in info but let me right in, and got my 2nd not as demand deer tag, was really hoping for a better number compared to get errors last year.

We got to remember we are non-residents, from the states prospective this gets all the tags sold!  I kinda like the system, let’s me know early and I can then plan other hunts around it.
If it went draw, won’t know till end of June, if drawn one year wait then.  Just my 2 cents
-
It’s complete madness but makes for a fun few hours. The numbers are random. We had 5 people in our group, all logged on roughly the same time. We had 900, 1500, 5100, 8200(me) and 10k. We all got the unit we we were after but it was a little stressful. I like it only because I’ve gotten the tag I was after. If I didn’t, I’d be complaining for a day too! I do have a handful of other units I would have gone after as well, they all seemed to have a few tags left so I wouldn’t have been too upset not drawing our primary unit

-
I logged in at about 8:40am and was number 10176. Stayed logged in until the three elk tags I wanted were sold out and said screw it. What a joke Idaho has become.

-
Logged in at 8:30 at 9:00 I was assigned #100 I was done by 9:03 Last year I got #8,000 something and took 4 hrs.

-
I'm not going to bust on Idaho.... I really like the old way of just buying my tags for where I want, when I wanted.  It's not that way anymore and it sucks, but I think this is fair. I would rather see a draw where you can apply with buddies and everyone draws or they don't.... I blame the internet, Steve Rinella, gohunt and Cameron Haines.. it is what it is.

-
				Waiting Room for what

-
Idaho tags, they have a que system preventing you from going directly to tags sales website.

-
				Crap already.!! :bash:

-
I have zero problem talking down about Idahos system

This system manipulates hunters with artificial demand and destroys the comradery of hunting in groups...its laughable they still call it OTC...non residents lost alot and seems some don't even realize it.

Advantages to every system but I wish they wouldn't have been so sleezy with this one
-
Hunting partner was way ahead of me in line. Hung out until I got in and we got a tag we could both purchase. I guess that makes it slightly different than a draw…?

-
I just logged back in for kicks and got right in...

And head's up ...elk tags state wide are almost completely gone... except selway :chuckle:

Deer tags are shrinking...this will be an all time record sales..

Man..I remember the good ole days when you could get extra deer tags in August...and didn't have to buy elk until June

-
Took us about 6 hours to get in, but the wife and I got the last 2 regular deer tags in the unit we wanted. The funny thing is the whitetail only tags sold out before the regular deer tags in our unit. :dunno:

Got on first thing. Got number 2375 ish. 22 min wait. Got my deer tag. Buddy didn’t get his so I logged back in under his name. Waited 3 hours got his deer tag. Only to find out I got myself the wrong deer tag. I needed a whitetail tag for unit one when I got a reg deer tag for unit one. Now comes the search to find someone who needs to trade! We’re putting in for a controlled unit so it might not matter.

I seen that with the regular deer tag vs the white tail deer tag

What's the difference between the two?

I'm confused - I got a reg deer tag for unit one, but it's good for whitetail and mule deer, right?  The general whitetail tag opens up other northern units, but my thought was the reg deer would give better controlled draw options.  So what's the issue?
-
Logged in and it said Salmon unit tags left = 1.   I added that to the cart quick!
 Whew!

I got my email reminder November 20th this year.

I think you can transfer the tag to him if it helps.

3 of 4 of us got our 2nd unit choice

I was in the mid 5000’s and our first and third options were to low to risk purchasing them.
-
Over 30 years going every year. Now 2 years in a row, no dice. I was in the Q at 8:27 and number 6131. Curious as to what time people got in the Q and what number they were issued. They say they are randomly given

-
Four of us logged in at 8:25.  #407, 4200, 6501 and 9555.  The first three of us got our desired elk tags.  #4 got the same elk tag, but he had to go with the B (rifle) tag instead of the A tag.

Keep in mind that Idaho has another free for all at the beginning of August when all of the turned back tags go back on sale and anybody (residents and non-residents) can buy them.  This year there were over 10,000 tags available to be purchased.  Sucks to wait that long to figure out your fall hunts, but there's still a chance that you can get a tag.

The difference between the two is the times of the hunt. Whitetail opens nov 10 and the regular deer opens mid nov. Don’t quote me on those dates.

Logged on 20 minutes late :bash:.  Sequence number 22721,  sat in the que until 3pm when I had to go to a staff meeting (still had 4000-some people ahead of me).  When I logged off, everything I wanted was sold out anyway  :(
Next year, I will not plan to be teaching at 9am...

If you’re planning on hunting whitetails in unit 1 there is no difference between the general tag and whitetail tag as far as season dates go.

Would you prefer it done this way in the future? In my mind, it could be done a lot cleaner and with less headache if it went to a draw but I don't have any skin in the game since I don't hunt Idaho. More just curious after back to back years of what sounds like a chit show.

I knew you were.  I was pushing back on those questioning.  I had a buddy get below 500 while I was 16k higher.  He got the tag.  I got to watch.  We were both logged in as soon as they let you.

As to future… I hear they are changing to accommodate group apps.  They will charge a fee most likely (draws cost money to run) but you would get to be all or none with your group.  No points being suggested….  I hope they keep it with no points.  Points don’t help anything but revenue.

-
That would be better.  Right now it's already basically a drawing to get to purchase what you want.

-
I hope not but I could see this potentially going to a preference points game. There are going to be people who did not get their tags that will complain that they should get first dibs next year. The randomness just makes it another draw. I was at 3700 and got the tag I wanted.

-
If I were king for a day, it would go to a non points based, completely random draw. Applicants would put their name in a hat and would assigned a random number. Based on those numbers, you would be assigned a day or handful of days to log in and select the tags you want. Given that they do this on December 1, I would think that you could complete this over the course of a month or two and still be done WELL ahead of when the vast majority other states application deadlines are up.

-
If I where king for a day preference would be given based on how long you've been hunting the state...

Make pool groups for every 5 year's.
30 plus group gets day one.
 25-29 day two
 And so on...

Bunch of first timers clogging up the system...

I'm not the guy to ask. I plan every hunt as if I was going solo. If people join then great, so the group thing is irrelevant.  Ive also dabbled in 20 or so units in idaho and love exploring new places so if what I want is sold out I'll just pick another. Last year as well as this year weren't stressful at all. Even sitting up around 10k I knew I was gonna get a deer tag somewhere. TONS of good tags to be purchased right at this very second if a guy truly wants to go hunt.

At the end of the day ID doesn't guarantee us a tag or owe us a tag. Their only concerns are selling all NR tags to fund their department. Tweek the sale a bit to lighten the burden on the server but hell no to a draw imo.

One small and easy thing that could be done is to break up the sale dates. Everything on Dec 1 is crazy. Let NR deer go on sale Dec 1. Then Dec 2 sell NR elk. Then Dec 3 let residents in to do whatever it is residents do on the first day they can buy stuff.
-
I like the way that it is. It will never be the same when I used to be able to get two tags every year. But I would much rather do it this way then I draw.

Little bit of sweat and persistence and tags can always be had. Last year I got a deer tag on Dec 1, then tried like hell every return tag sale and finally snagged an elk tag I was interested in during the July sale. Then aug I snagged a second deer tag.  I trained to get tags in idahos system. All auto fill data was inputted. I made dozens of dry runs through the system from log in steps, where things were located on the main page, to checkout steps. I could go through the whole process of buying a tag in under a minute as long as the website somewhat behaved..  Like ammo, gone are the days of casually getting things. A guy can sit around and sulk or he can make something a priority and take the steps to make that priority come to fruition :twocents:

I guess what I was getting at, again I have no skin in the game, is a way to diminish the madness of trying to get everyone to buy in one day. Some way to spread the purchases out over at least a few days so that people don't get booted when checking out etc.

And like I said…You had an opportunity to get tags and have a fun hunt in the end. With a draw, you either get it or you dont. I got number 18500 and did not get my top 2 choices but I will still shoot a buck next year…better than seeing not selected.

Splitting the deer and elk would go along ways I believe...also beings it's essentially a free lottery I'm sure there is a decent amount of people that are only hoping for a low number to draw a hyped tag.. maybe put alil skin in the game just to participate  :dunno: do those top tags a different day ?

No reason they can't take abit of the anxiety out and still make money

This year was better done then last year so hopefully 2023 sales go even better

I’d bet they’ll be changing to something different within the next couple years.

Pretty sure they went up again this year. Will probably go up again next year.
-
Prices did not go up. Same as last year for me.

I tend to be with Karl and generally roll solo for most deer, the tags I have hunted and hunts i want to do are not the most popular so if someone wants to join they have very good odds of getting tags. I think i only switched units one time early on, so didnt really miss that this year, it seems like the switch to pick a unit and the quotas in those units are at least grounded in some science.

Elk is a different story. Aside from the tweaks to the system itself ( i dont mind it to much other than cluttering time, and would be nice to have some sort of partner/group option if a good solution could be found)..... my heartburn is the huge slashes to all the  healthy units, and the units below objective are where the leftovers are. It seems like a hard turn from science based to money based management.
-
I meant they went up from 2020 to (this year) 2021. They didn't go up in 2022, but I would fully expect them to go up in 2023 if they sell out again in 2022. Seems like idaho has jumped on the money grab train like all of the other western states. It's sad because the opportunity seemingly keep going down across all western states as the price goes up. Hunting will eventually become a sport only the rich and elite can afford, which makes me sad for the future generations.

Copy. I have only lived in ID fora few months. I haven’t even begun on starting to figure out how it all works. I have a WA buddy who wanted to hunt deer with me next year. Sounds like he missed the boat.

From what I understand IDFG has to use a waiting room or all the online activity would crash the servers. The problem is that there are probably 40k nonresidents now wanting to buy tags on day one, this is the same reason Idaho had to limit non-residents to one unit, too many non-residents were showing up in certain popular units and it was getting worse every year.

I applaud IDFG for trying to keep tags over the counter rather than going to a draw for all non-residents.

For anyone over 50 or 60 who just gets interested in non-resident hunting, you have little or no chance of ever drawing a decent tag that currently requires 15 points or more in some states, by the time you have that 15 points due to point creep you will need 30 points to draw!

Think about that a little before you wish for that in Idaho!  :twocents:

If they did go to a draw down the road, I would hope there would be no points and it would be purely random. Points have ruined every state that uses them

NM is what 5% odds?  No points

I would hope they would stick with no points like their controlled drawing. I figure it would be more like drawing a Utah general season tag. Or a Montana general season tag.

I don't mind what they are doing now... besides maybe unit choice for deer...I wish they would of went zones like elk..

If a guy wants to hunt Idaho as of this morning there are still good opportunities for deer and elk...so the system isn't completely broken. It just needs some tweaking...like staggering days for elk, deer, etc...I don't buy an elk tag every year so logging in and waiting with 10k guys trying to buy sawtooth tags when all's I want is deer is a little lame.. :chuckle:

Should be able to at least be able to apply as partners. Shouldn’t have to go out of state solo, unless you want to or have no friends.

If and when they go to a draw I hope so too!

I agree with others that there could be some tweeking done to improve the system greatly, one thing I would like to see is that when one guy finally gets in to buy tags, he can purchase for his group, the current system is breaking apart a lot of groups that normally hunt together. I hope we will see improvements over time.

:yeah: It would be pretty simple to allow groups to sign up ahead of time and get in together under 1 randomized number. I don’t like the idea of each guy in a group being able to buy for his whole group as that would favor the groups over the individuals.
-
Another option for group hunters is just picking a less desirable tag. There’s still plenty of areas that a group could get multiple tags for and still have a good hunt.

-
You have the group thing now - just look at biggest number and that gives you an idea what you can all get in on.  i.e. someone in your group is gonna be at 13000+ so there won’t be much you all can get but there are some .

One idea is to have a sign up period for those that are planning to buy tags.  Then IDFG emails you your place in line, with a specific time window to log on the next day.   It accomplishes the same thing, and keeps guys from having to stay logged in for hours and wait. It also gives groups advance notice of what they may or may not be able to go together on based on when each guys login time is.  Having a designated login time lets guys mark off their work calendar for 15-30 minutes to complete the process.

Allowing groups to buy all their "OTC" tags at once when the first guy gets in is unfair to others.  That's basically line jumping in the queue.   If IDFG were to do that, they should just make it a controlled draw with application fees and stop pretending it's not a controlled draw process for OTC tags.....then groups can apply together like a normal controlled draw as it is indeed a controlled draw at that point....
