Seriously, has this forum been the same since 2000? It'd be nice to have been search functionality, etc.
-
I use search all the time
-
:yeah:
Try the upper right corner.
It will search the specific board you are on or back out to the top to search all boards.
-
You might find google works best.
For example searching on here for tritip info in your google browser type-
site:hunting-washington.com tritip
-
Here ya go! Merry Christmas!

Took me awhile to figure out it was only searching the board I had open. I thought it was searching all boards regardless whether i had one moard open or was on the home page.
Not complaining, I use the search feature now and then and its kind of fun to see the results from threads that were started before i was a member and what was being discussed/debated.
Sometimes its kind of damning for some members as predictions posted years ago did not come true :tung:
Merry Christmas everyone.
-
When I use the search function on my phone I usually only get one page of results. When I use it on a computer I get the whole search function. Stuff from 10 years ago. Maybe you are having that issue? I'm not sure what causes that but maybe try from the computer?
-
I actually prefer the layout of this forum and find others clunky, familiarity I guess but it just feels right for me.
-
While other forums in climbing, hiking, construction trades, tractors and legal advice have become ghost towns, this one has held up. Not easily said in the day of FB
-
I wouldn't mind a cell phone friendly addon, instead of using tapatalk.

With iphone I prefer the non-cell browser - just like computer.

FYI - For several years SMF has been working on a new version of software with many of the changes that I have seen members asking for from time to time. I have been told the new version is now in Beta mode and being tested, the anticipated roll out seems to keep getting delayed, but eventually it will be available and it will address many of the features members have been asking for.
I have considered doing modifications for some features but our tech guy Liroy says many of the features I wanted will be standard with the new SMF and that we should wait for it to become available.
-
Sweet, thanks for the information Bearpaw
-
I wouldn't mind a cell phone friendly addon, instead of using tapatalk.
I am told this is one of the features being addressed with the new SMF.
I tried several modifications to the current SMF software and most caused issues or weren't that user friendly.
-
Maybe so, however i am grateful for it.
Lots of good people sharing their thoughts and help on various topics.
Merry Christmas and God bless to all.
-
I like the "recent topics" on the right. I can click on the topic I want and it takes me to the last post. Thats a really nice feature rather then having to scroll a bunch.
Also, though it makes for a lot of sections, I like the break down of all the species hunted, trapping, fishing, vehicles, virtual campfire, non hunting and of course its nice having the politics in its own section so folks who do not come here for that can avoid it.
I like the no swearing rule too, keeping the board on the lower end of PG rated.

Actually Tapatalk did a software update and now a lot more functions. Like starting a new thread or seeing a profile work now previously though I am with you it sucked.

I love the forum. Only thing I dislike is not being able to upload photos from my phone to the web browser. Not a fan of adding a ton of apps to my phone so I don’t use tap talk.
-
I feel like the forum got upgraded and better about a year ago when it flushed alot of turds down the drain.
-

@Parasite Could you provide more information as to what isn't specifically working for you and your expectations? I work in tech and have for over 30 years, something like you posted doesn't actually give any details as to what the exact problem is nor what one could do to fix it. That isn't a knock, please don't take it as such, I would just like to better understand the actual problem.
I would also state that the site hasn't been the same since 2000, although I don't admin here and this is an educated guess based on how technology actually works, there have been updates as the W3 CSS of the index page was released in December of 2020, operating system updates, database updates that most everyone is unaware of, unless they go horribly wrong and take the site down.

That’s probably more an issue with your camera settings on your phone than the forum. 999/1000 if you can’t upload a photo, it’s because of the size of the photo.

:yeah: Most phone photos are too large of pixel size. There are easy ways to overcome that problem, are you using an iphone or android?

@Parasite hoping you can give a little more detail. I too struggled with the search function until I found out it works better if I’m just searching a particular board. Looking forward to hearing more detail from you and your experience. I know Dale is always open to making this forum better.

:yeah:
Still a few to go but the ignore feature has become a valuable tool I failed to utilize in the past. 99% of problems solved. I love this site !!!
-
When I saw the title of this post, I thought the OP was talking about replacing the users. Oh.
I agree with others. While other hunting, gun, fishing, climbing, forums have all withered away, this one continues. There is more than critical mass, which is the key point.
Is this the bestest software ever? Probably not. Is it good enough? Yes.
-
This site works just fine for me. I have always used my phone as I am not around a computer very often and I find the browser version to be better than Tapatalk. I don't even have Tapatalk anymore. I would also agree with the Admins on the issues that are being brought up. Most are due to operator error. Which is not a dig at anyone's capabilities when it comes to technology. It's just a fact. I have an excellent camera phone and can't post any pictures without downsizing pixels or overall file size, etc. Maybe some stickies can be made more noticable to folks with better reference to how to use forum features?
-
I've always used my phone.
Just browser , sometimes I can get away with posting large pics. But I never do ,I always resize and rename anyway .
Just for people looking for location information in my pictures.
I have searched Google before on hunting stuff and seen old topics on the forum pop up.
I have used the search here on the forum before too.
Overall the setup as it is seems to work.👍
-
Other folks have mentioned this before, I like to see a way to give likes and such without getting the thread popping up in “ Show new replies to your posts”.
Lots of good pics, and other stuff on here I like, just don’t want to have the post to keep popping up in my recents.
Hopefully that doesn’t sound to crass.
-
This site works fine. I also mostly use my ‘older’ phone as I am not around a laptop or box I can use for personal stuff.
I sometimes will email myself a pic if I need to make it smaller and usually select ‘medium’ for size.
Biggest issue for me is ‘fat fingering’ buttons.
-
I use the browser version on almost all forums I visit using my phone.
-
I don’t have any major issues with the site. Search engine can be frustrating sometimes, better stickies may help. As stated, before if I’m going to post a phone photo, I email it to myself and select medium. Most of the issues I have are created by the Wizards of Bill and MS 365.
Remember this is a FREE site, funding is done through sponsors, donations and Bearpaw’s out of pocket.

The search function is my only complaint, but that is far out shadowed by the wealth of knowledge and true sense of community here. Ive never seen an online forum with so many people happy and willing to help each other out, this is a very unique place and I am very proud to be a member.
-
Try this regarding the search function. If you know you’re searching for a deer related topic let’s say…. Open up the deer hunting board and search from there. I’ve had no issues to the point that it makes me wonder what the heck people are complaining about with the search function. It literally always works fine for me that way. The search function even works in Tapatalk now.
-
Ya I dunno, I use search a ton as a mod and it works good.
I limit to what forums section I want, I search by member, its so 2nd hand to me I don't think about it.
-
Zero complaints here.
Fantastic group of people.... and I can click ignore on the very few that provide no value.
Can't ask for more.
-
Obviously, I enjoy the forum. Improvements are always nice to anything. Thanks Dale.
-
I would take a look at Wordpress based software like bbpress:
https://bbpress.org/
Automatically scales to any device

I think its like a lot of things. If you use the search feature a bunch you learn it's quirks. Ive always had trouble with searches. I get 1k hits or zero.

Well that in itself shows a limitation.
No site wide search of posts from a user for example.
Posting media also causes a lot of frustration.

Click on the user's name or profile.
Click on banner that says Profile info
Click on Show Posts
That will show you every single post that user has made on the forum since they started their account.

That still isn't a search and if have to read a FAQ or go to a forum to learn about how to search for user posts then you aren't arguing in favor of the software.
You should be able to search for @parasite from the home page and get the results. That is what everyone expects.
These types of forums have moved to wordpress. It's the standard and would solve a lot of these problems.

mind blown!!!! I never knew this and always struggled with the search function. Well apparently its because I was searching "deer" topics in the "other big game" section etc. Just did some playing after this and the search function works awesome 🤣🤣🤣🤦♂️

maybe we should change this thread from: This forum could use an upgrade ....
to: This forum could use a tutorial.....
:chuckle:
-
I like the forum as is. My only complaint is the picture posting is not as easy as it was. I dont know if my phone has increases the data size, but it (the site) used to easily post 6 or 8 pics at a time, and no need for a bunch of resizing or screen shot takes. Now every pic must be a screen shot, some of those dont load and its limited to 2 at a time. Lots of extra steps. It has definitely cut down on my posting of pics just due to the effort involved in getting it to work at times.
-
My only complaint is when I post pics from my iPhone, they come in sideways for some reason.
I thought I read a solution to this issue awhile ago, but damned if I can remember, :dunno:
-
That still isn't a search and if have to read a FAQ or go to a forum to learn about how to search for user posts then you aren't arguing in favor of the software.
...
You should be able to search for @Parasite from the home page and get the results. That is what everyone expects.
If you want a list of all posts from a user, you've already been given the solution how to get there. Opening someone's profile to see their posts and topics is very normal and quite the standard everywhere; has been the case since forever and the same approach has been adopted by many other places; just look at Reddit for example (heck until recently they didn't even have the ability to search for usercomments at all, whilst this forum does have such an option.) or to some extent even Facebook. (Speaking of horrible search functions...)
If, however, you want to search for a specific topic or phrase a specific user has participated in, then you have to click "Search", enter your keyword and then fill in their username in the "By user" field and voila: you get exactly what you wanted. ;) You can even filter/narrow it down further to your wishes if you please.
So that's two options to achieve what you want with great ease. Doesn't sound difficult to me and I think it's pretty straightforward, at the very least easily discovered by visiting someones profile or the search function once and you'll instantly see these things. :P List of all posts by user? Visit profile. Want to search for specifics by that user: use the search function, it's what it's there for. :) That's it. But maybe I find it easy because it's what I've seen on pretty much the majority of forum software out there with a substantial userbase and has been like that for 20+ years. (SMF, myBB, phpBB, YaBBSE back then, etc.). But sure, I've also seen the "@user" option in software like Discourse. It's simply a different design philosophy for the search function. The developers of this forum software chose to do it differently and more in-line with how it's always worked since inception, simple as that.
Lastly, regarding FAQ's... This is actually what user manuals are for. If you're not sure how something works, you can look it up. Considering search functions work (a little bit) different everywhere, your assumptions may be different between software A and software B and thus it would be recommended to see if what you had assumed or what you're used to is the same here or that it works differently. There's nothing strange about that either and is not arguing in favour or against any software; not this one nor what you're used to otherwise. It's just different software, much like how smartphone A does not operate exactly the same way as smartphone B. This is more what comes down to what you're used to from elsewhere, but elsewhere is fortunately not the same everywhere. It'd be boring if all we have are single standards with zero differences and it would halt innovations. So yeah, sometimes you have to leave the convenience of merely assuming/expecting everything to work the same everywhere and do a wee bit of reading. :)
These types of forums have moved to wordpress. It's the standard and would solve a lot of these problems.
N...no. That'd be a nightmare for a place like this and really not quite suitable for a forum this size at all imho. Plus it's really not the standard in the world of communities. (Not to mention that WordPress being abused as a glorified CMS (not necessarily speaking of the BB) whilst it was never really designed for that purpose leads to a multitude of problems, including security and optimisation issues. Heck, I'd almost say in some aspects it has, through community butchering, become the modern day PHPNuke. But perhaps that's a bit extreme.)
Having said that, the new generation of this current software does address a couple of points raised; such as the inclusion of a fully responsive design, more hooks, username mentions, user notifications (including desktop notifications in supported browsers), drafts, likes, etc. It will definitely be worth looking in to upgrading to the latest generation, but upgrading is not a task that should be taken lightly or be underestimated. :)

You mean like this?
Leave the search box empty. Click search. Click advanced search. You get this:

I'm not asking for a solution. I'm pointing out that there isn't a straightforward one that users are able to find on their own.
Reddit is quite simple and can easily be found by typing "search by user Reddit"
https://www.reddit.com/user/karusu88
And it has all kinds of search modifiers.
Search isn't the main issue. It's the image upload. I've seen many classified posts where people get frustrated and ask to send the image by cell. Just because I can do it does not change that fact that it has problems. I'm not asking for help. I am pointing out that the software has areas where it can be improved. I don't like to see people get frustrated with software.
Doesn't sound difficult to me and I think it's pretty straightforward
If you click Search and then fill in the user name it returns:
Did you forget to put something to search for?
No I didn't. I entered the user name and it should assume I am searching for all posts.
That should be the default behavior. It also doesn't suggest using some type of wildcard like * nor does it work. I can however use an asterisk for the user which is odd.
If your search needs a FAQ to search by user then it has problems. At the very least searching for anything using the box should return an advanced search with the results beneath.

No forum software can make everyone happy. I don't reddit, so that software is confusing to me.
I am a poweruser of this forum, as attested by my 30 thousand posts and volunteering to be a moderator :chuckle:
The only thing I find lacking is automated picture reduction and compression like when you post a pic on Facebook it sizes it way down and peels the meta data off. It would be hella nice if it were kiss simple to post a pic here. Yes I know screenshots...but pics are one of the spots that generates the most frustration for nontechy members.
The other issue is being addressed, and thats cell phone use.

The forum owner is already invested in smf, I'm not a forum software guy, but I think it would be a *very* big deal to put everything from smf to bbpress or other software.
I could see loosing a ton of stuff, and many folks here only use this forum and no other, all they know is smf and barely navigate that as it is...a big switch to a whole new platform would be met with *much* resistance.
I like XenForo forum software myself.

I’m not trying to be part of this conversation. Just want to let you know that Liroy isn’t really a very active member of the forum and he’s in a different country. He’s the guy who helps us with the tech end of the forum because we’re all a bunch of dummies in this regard. So I’m not sure if or whenever he’ll respond.

I do understand feeling emotionally invested in a project but I'm seeing problems in this software (Simple Machines) that are clearly frustrating users. Blaming the user is not the answer especially when it isn't a problem in many alternatives. Hopefully the new upgrade will address some of these issues.

Posting Photos is an issue I hope to make easier. When we had trouble with one of our previous servers we set the forum to only accept two photos per post so that the server could handle that. After our coming software upgrade I'll experiment with increasing that number (depending on Liroy's advice). The issue with resizing, we have the forum set to only accept up to a certain size of photo files 800x600 pixels, otherwise with the extreme number of photos posted on this forum our server requirements would be crazier than they already are. Each new generation of phones keeps taking larger file sized photos, that's why your phone photos are now better than many cameras. Phones are taking photos that are several times larger file size than they used to be, thus more users are having to resize photos. My hope is that we can get photo resizing automated at some point to resolve that issue.

Liroy has already addressed this in his post. I'll add that I have looked over other software, as Liroy more or less indicated, each has it's advantages and disadvantages, I'm firmly convinced that this forum is best served to stay with SMF software.
We are working on moving the forum to the latest upgrade now, it will take some time, you can follow the progress here: https://hunting-washington.com/smf/index.php/topic,270047.0.html

My only complaint is when I post pics from my iPhone, they come in sideways for some reason.
I thought I read a solution to this issue awhile ago, but damned if I can remember, :dunno:
Image file rotation problems are usually related to embedded metadata forcing a rotation when using an image on another platform from where it was created. It can usually be fixed by stripping the "EXIF" data from the file before sending it to the new platform. You'll need an image editor to strip the metadata if your photo software doesn't have an option to save it without the data. This may be more info than you wanted, but just wanted to let you know there is a way to fix the problem.

When on my iphone the simplest solution I have found for photos loading sideways or upside down is to take a screenshot and post the screenshot instead of the original.

I have this problem continually, and I don't post pictures from my cell phone. Well, they were taken on my cell phone, emailed to my desktop computer, downloaded, resized, and then posted. Nearly half of them post sideways.
I tried to read what netcoyote posted about it, but I blacked out after I got to the second sentence...
...advice?

I don't iPhone *yet*
Try pushing the button on the right side (off button)
and the volume up button on the left side simultaneously
Did it snap a shot of whatever is on your screen?
-
After you snap a screen shot you can crop, draw on it or edit, then upload that to HW
-
Screenshots do not have any info on them (metadata) no gps cords, nothing
-
If that doesn't work youtube "how to screenshot (your phone model)"

Still the easiest way to cell phone your way around hunt wa is through the Tapatalk app. They fixed issues. Search function works. You can view profiles now. The best part is that it auto resizes photos for you. No messin around with screenshots and downloads and resizing pics and all the things.
Phelps couldn’t get his elk pics to post yesterday because the files were all too big, so I had him text them to me and I posted them all in about 3 minutes through Tapatalk with zero issues once he sent me the right pic files LOL. It’s butter.
I’m using iPhone. Maybe that’s easier. I know KF has reported android issues with Tapatalk but I also wonder if they fixed those issues when they fixed all the other issues they recently fixed.

I haven't tried it for a long time, I might revisit it.

I think it would help to post the 800x600 pixel requirement in the attachment instructions. My biggest frustration has been meeting the listed requirements (allowed file type, 2 per post, under 15,000KB each) and still getting an error. Only recently learned that there was a pixel limit too.

Any traction on adding the pixel limit to the attachment instructions? I’m not familiar with what mods can see/edit on the back end related to that but it would certainly help with the frustrations people have with attaching photos…
Happy Thanksgiving to everyone

That's not easily accessible, it would require our tech guy's attention. Because we are supposed to be upgrading to a newer version of the software as soon as possible, which has significant changes, I'm going to wait until after the upgrade to make any significant changes.
