Last week it had about 3 inches of clear with 2 of gray.  Heard of one person might have gotten some thru the hole.
But it is making ice today.

I haven't ice fished in a long time!  Coincidence, today I just picked up a power auger lol.

but struck out on poles,  found some kids poles on clearance for 5 bux ea ,so picked up a fist full of those for kids and perch or crappie.

I suspect most typical ice fishin lakes are gtg

I picked up a couple of Thermo Ice combo poles from North 40 in Colville a month ago, I’m assuming you went there since it’s in your neighborhood. There was lots of them available at the time. I’ve gotten pretty finicky about poles since my rookie year. My husband got stuck with a homemade ice pole made from a regular trout pole and it was too stiff and he missed a lot of subtle bites. Now I have super light, light and a medium action “ice” poles. Nothing wrong with chopping a trout pole just make sure it’s fairly limber.

The cousin did some test fishing today on Cascade. Said there was 12 inches with about 3-4 inches of slush layered in the middle.

Anyone making holes in the ice yet? Hoping to hit Curlew in the next few weeks. Anyone have an ice report for Curlew?
I measured 4-5 inches of good ice straight out from the state park at Curlew yesterday.  Further north and south it was highly variable.  As little as 2-3 inches of clear hard ice below softer ice.  Had my 9 year old son with me this trip so we stayed on the thick stuff and enjoyed very good fishing.  He had a blast!  We sure love catching those plentiful Curlew perch...and the fish tacos that follow!

As an aside, we had a WDFW enforcement officer out checking licenses on the ice at Curlew this week. Super nice guy and I appreciated our positive interaction.

Daggon that looks awesome! Curlew sounds promising. What’s the suggested thickness of ice before walking out on it?

I had to look it up to verify.  4" is what it is and we normal went out on the lake to fish in MN.  5-7 will hold a snowmobile or atv.  10"  for a vehicle.  Yup we drove on lakes and put full on ice houses on our lakes back home.  Think the movie Grumpy Old Men but way nicer fish houses.  I might have to try curlew.  Wouldn't mind catching a musky through the ice.  Have caught northerns and walleye through the ice.  Biggest fish was a 7 lbs lake trout through the ice.  Was sitting at the depth of 90'.  We caught eel pout or what is known as burbot.  Let them freeze and play ice football with them.

I feel safe with 4 inches of hard clear ice.  It is good habit to check as you go out farther and farther from shore or around the larger lakes. I use a heavy breaker pinch point pry bar to smack the ice...number of blows in the same spot generally correlates with thickness...less than three and I'm staying off.  Then drill some holes to verify the quality and thickness.

Check this Google maps link for ice conditions

I already had to seek 'medicine' from elsewhere to get my spring bear fix.  Not drawing again for 3 years after having an amazingly fun Wenaha hunt just about killed me.

Sounds like fun for sure!

I wonder how much the 5 extra pole endorsements cost in Montana.   :chuckle: :chuckle: :chuckle:  That alone would be $74 if WDFW even offered it, plus dealer fee.  :chuckle:

Did you buy it direct from Eskimo? They were pretty limited in November too. We looked at other brands but kept going back to the Eskimo. Congratulations on the purchase!

Good choice on a shanty!  Those open doors are so much easier than get through without tripping.   I got the new Otter Pro Lodge with a similar style door as your XD.

They actually work pretty well as a quick popup tent for hunting.  I did two nights during the late deer hunt to shake down my gear and approach for overnights on the ice.  Not completely rainproof on the side wall with unsealed seems and stitching in the heavy rain and sleet, but kept me warm and dry in combo with the buddy heater.

I've done a couple overnighters this ice season and it's a hoot.  You get your days and nights a bit mixed up with the night bite!

Check out the Trick Your Hub Facebook group.  Those guys gave me tons of ideas my layout and sled. It's like another blackhole for us ADHD/OCD hobbiests who need a another distraction

Scheels and Sportsman's online has some shelters still available.  Amazon has some less expensive options and guys on the FB group give them decent reviews.

-8 degrees F on Curlew with stiff wind had is taking shelter this week.  (https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20211231/70657f7e3b35b822cdbff0968f5a0f7b.jpg)(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20211231/3c34ee508f271b6b5acef3ade4d48f82.jpg)(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20211231/42f14d9429da8038726bcd6b7c43b933.jpg)

Search smitty sled. This allows the sled to ride onto of the snow. Cuts friction huge unless it is all a frozen sheet

Not critical for normal sized hauls. I ran the sled by itself for years.  First season with smitty sled mod.  In the deeper snow it does definitely help. Those big insulated hubs take up alot of space and are heavy.  I did the frame to allow me to carry the hub shelter on one side and the auger on the other side rather than in the plastic sled...for more room for more crap I probably should have l left at home .

How big are they in Silver lake? Should be a ton of them. Just my guess on water. :dunno:

They never get any size in there or Eloika.

But I guess it it is like the trough at the buffet. So many choices and they only eat the best choice.

If anyone is interested, I saw an add today for a Ice Fishing Tournament on Elk Creek Reservoir over in Idaho.  It would be south of Saint Maries, so a long drive for some of you.  It's a trout tournament, but lots of other types of fish in there.  Entry fee was $10.

My parents would take us kids there ,30 years ago.
We would bring a hatchet and firewood.
Cut hole through the ice with a hatchet to fish, and build a fire on the ice. Winter was rough then. The road was so bad with snow we would walk the mile or whatever it was ,pulling sleds through the snow, with firewood and fishing gear.

Finally got our hut yesterday after several failed Reddaway delivery attempts due to to weather. Got the white composite runners attached to the bottom of the sled, now for the rest of the crap. By the time we get this thing put together with all our gear it’s going to weigh a ton  :( . Told myself I wasn’t going to add electronics to my ice fishing, but that also has changed. I figured it would save time by not sitting in an unproductive spot wondering if there was even anything down in the water. Watched WAY too many ice fishing fish finder videos and ended up with a Garmin LiveScope Ice fishing bundle with Echomap. Once I seen how it worked I couldn’t unsee it, I had to have it. The only justification for the purchase is it’s going to get used on the boat too. I feel like I need to move to Minnesota or Wisconsin now  :tung: .

I been seeing those same vids  :chuckle:

You dropped some $$

You get your hut yet?
I do have a 4 man blue tarp. But any place you chose to go right now is a chore hauling the fish camp onto the ice.

I sure did  :bash: . We did a crap ton of fishing last spring and summer so I’m hoping the Garmin will be a good addition to the boat. I still feel dirty though  :'( .

Your first perch will be a $3000 fish, but each subsequent fish will half that price  ;)

Anyone been to Hog Canyon yet this year?
My parents would take us kids there ,30 years ago.
We would bring a hatchet and firewood.
Cut hole through the ice with a hatchet to fish, and build a fire on the ice. Winter was rough then. The road was so bad with snow we would walk the mile or whatever it was ,pulling sleds through the snow, with firewood and fishing gear.

I've had a LOT of fun fishing there in the past.  When my 4x4 went out one winter I got stuck trying to get out.  I made several runs, but would get stuck 10 feet from the top.  Slide back down.  Finally on one attempt I just put it in the shallow ditch on the side and waited for someone to come along and give me a short tug to the top!  :)  Next time I went there I parked at the upper parking lot and walked down to the back of the canyon.

Fished Moses Lake Sunday morning for 2.5 hours near I 90 bridge.  Not a bite.  The small crowd of icefishermen dwindled quickly.  I heard of 1 small perch caught and that was it.  Not sure if Lind coulee is fishable yet, didnt drive down to check it out.

Thanks. We set it up several times so we won’t look AS dorky when we really go to use it. Sucker is gonna stick out like Rudolph’s nose. The only down side, it is a bit on the heavy side. I’ll be curious how difficult it will be to hand pull it. We did install the composite white runner strips underneath, maybe that would help make it easy. Might have to get a couple of malamutes to pull it.

Stay safe all. My twin brother Steve is mentioned in this article. Ice fisherman's worst nightmare next to falling through thin ice. My nephew had his gloves blow away when he was trying to get a fishhook out of his cloths when scrambling to pull all the lines in. He got a bad case of chilblain on his hands that was extremely painful when they thawed out.

It is over the top. We wanted something a little smaller but there was limited supply like everything these days and this was one of the few available. Thinking about getting a big screen TV for it… if the weather is foul it’ll be fun to hunker down in. We had one of those nasty days on Cascade last year and it was kinda fun sitting in a blizzard in a tent, listening to good music and catching giant perch.

A little Ice Fishing story.  Many years ago (Wow, 23 years ago :yike:)  I took my middle Son fishing on Hog Canyon Lake.  Had an awesome time with him.  End of the day we packed up and headed off the ice.  There was one other guy on the lake with us.  As we were hiking out, he packed up and headed in as well.  I told my Son, see that, smart man, never go ice fishing by yourself.  VERY next day, big snow storm rolls in and the Base is closed, I was in the Air Force at the time.  I head out to 4th of July Lake.  4th of July almost always has very clear ice.  I drive through a heck of a snow storm only to get to an empty parking lot.   :(  So completely NOT listening to the advice I gave my Son the day before, I head out onto the ice.  Half the lake was actually open water.  I walk around the edge and it looks like decent ice, so I step out about 5 or 6 feet, set my bucket down.  Put my ice auger point down and start to turn the handle.  Myself and all of my gear go right through the ice.  I never did touch the bottom.  Lucky for me i was able to hang onto my auger and managed to hook a rock next to the bank and was barely able to pull myself out.  Long cold walk back to the truck.  Lost all my gear, except my auger.  I was very lucky that day!!

Did a bit of hole hopping today, got to try out some of the gear.   The ice sucked,  8 inches or so ice below, then a layer of water, then a crap layer of soft ice, then 4 inches or so of snow

You walk around post holing through the crap layer of ice, then you drill a hole and put your chair down only to have one leg punch through and you almost tip over on your arse in the slush.

Not a single nibble...

I'm fishing blind, no flasher or sonar yet.

The north end is riddled with fresh water springs. I have been wet many times growing up. That is some dangerous water to start with. Even when it is not covered by snow you can see the dark spots on the ice.

I’m no pro at the fish finder equipment but I was looking real hard at the Garmin Stryker 4 for an affordable but fairly reliable compact fish finder. It had pretty good reviews. Any compact fish finder cheaper than that I read they’re inconsistent and somewhat unreliable.

At least you knew the fish were there to even make the effort. I told myself I was going to draw a line with fish finding equipment but then someone explained to me that it would save me time by not wasting time in an unproductive spot wondering if the fish were even there to begin with.

I'm not sure how to do this. I'm in possession of a clam 360 hut. I have been storing it for a forum member. It is larger than I need.  I will not set a price. But you can contact him.
Then you can work out the details. It doesn't have any rips or tears.  Shows no signs of mold or mildew.

I'm gonna try it, love frying up catfish but we don't have the big species up here.   Super quick to clean, batter and fry bone in.

Who fishes for bullheads through the ice?

I'm gonna try it, love frying up catfish but we don't have the big species up here.   Super quick to clean, batter and fry bone in.

From what I have learned you want small cats for eating, but the prep turns me off. Good eating though.

Bullheads or Channel cats?  Bullheads are nasty....at least where I grew up in Missouri.

Never been ice fishing myself so I'm curious about the snow, slush, ice layers. Looking as some of the links for ice conditions how do get slush between layers of ice? Wouldn't it freeze between the ice layers or does the ice act as an insulator preventing the slush from getting cold enough to fully freeze? I know snow acts as an insulator with only a few inches of cover from ambient temps only allowing the temp to drop 5ish degrees below freezing when the ambient temp could be well below freezing.

Snow pushes the ice down, water seeps (gushes) up through cracks, surface of the new water layer freezes, and then gets snowed on again

Ice making depends on temps if it keeps below freezing it shouldnt slush up even with snow on it.  Ice will groan when it is making ice.  Grew up listening to it out in the fish house.  Sounds creepy if you have never hear it before.  I grew up on yhe 5th largest lake in MN.  We would get up 3 plus feet of solid ice.  We didn't run hand augers most of ours were powered.  We did catch eel pout all the time.  What you call burbot.  So my question for you all.  Do you not use live bait.  Usually we throw a minnow with a spinner on and slay the walleyes.  Catch burbot with thay to.

The lake I was on hadn't seen above freezing temps for a long time but had 4 inches of slush.  It had seen about 2.5 feet of snow, but slushed back all but about 6 inches or so.

Last two days is the only time it got above freeze

Winner winner walleye dinner!  Lake Vermillion has more shore line than California,  New York and Hawaii combined.  Over 1200 miles.  It would completely freeze over.  Sometimes the ice would not come off fully until May somw years.

Ya, it's more a huge collection of bays and narrows than a lake. Exact opposite of Mille lacs. Never fished it in the winter, but sure loved our time up there in the summer.

I believe minnows can be used as long as they are not game fish and are from the body of water they are used in. Don't have regs in front of me at present.
I know growing up we always would stop and get 3 dz just before heading out to the ice.

Nope. No live fish for bait in freshwater. Oh what I'd give for a bucket of crappie minnows in the boat in the spring.
When I go back to Minnesota, I always stop in a bait shop just to look at all the minnows!

I think I brought up the mivie Grumpy Old Men but it really was like that out on the lake.  Minus the gal selling stuff.  4 holes in each corner rods down with minnows on and bobbers.  Fire in the fire place.  Pot if venison doinkers (polish dogs) going with a case of Schmidt beer out side.  We would go house to house drinking and seeing what someone caught. If Eelpout/burbot was caught we would through it out in the ice so we could play ice football.  Miss those days for sure.

I will guess that its a skimmer, with a graduated ruler to measure the ice depth. Hook the skimmer on the bottom of the ice and then find the top of the water level.

That is a front of the plane skimmer.  You notice the wire in the handle which extends. Just add the difference between the bottom of the wire to the level.

I have one but nothing that nice.

Then there's many more cool things to think you need.

That ice depth contraption was always useless to us.  When we fished Winnebago, ice depth was not a concern.  We had ice some years you couldn't drill through.  And yes, 4 feet thick plus.  You just drove (cars, trucks, semis, whatever) out farther.  It was the years when we had a lot of cold with limited snow.

Get ready for this, he would catch a few, they would get half frozen sitting on the ice. He would pull out this thing ,it kinda looked liked a sharp paper clip . Anyway he would pop there eyeball out of the ones he caught . Throw those on his hook.
I swear it, and he sat over there and caught a pile, while I couldn't even feel them bite.

He even had an old pill bottle there full of fish eyes,
He would take them home freeze them, bring the leftover fish eye with him ,so he had a few to catch the first ones.
I swear it ,never seen that before.
The guy always had a pile, and never bought bait or anything.

8 inch ice yesterday with some areas you punch through to the lower layers, but if you stay on tbe trails it was hard ice, wished I had my boot chains.  Might have got some snow last night.  Weather supposed to be warm this week  :dunno:

Be ready to fish 50-60 feet

I talked to a guy heading to Cascade yesterday, must be a popular spot

I was thinking that might have been where you went. I’ll have to get some boot chains since it’ll definitely be a hand pulling the sled situation.
Yeah, Cascade is getting pretty popular year after year. It’s a huge body of water and there’s still plenty of room for people to spread out and fish. We’re leaving for there in the morning, so excited!

Cascade Lake is World Class Perch fishery, not only do guys travel from all across the US to get there, but people from all over the world travel there, just for the jumbo perch.

Cool.  It will likely be next year before I can give it a go on my own - I have zero gear or idea what I am doing.  But given the opportunity is literally a 2 min drive away I think I need to figure it out.  If you want a rookie to help haul your gear next time give me a poke!

Did Thomas lake today,

https://wdfw.wa.gov/fishing/locations/lowland-lakes/lake-thomas

scored a few more trout and a number of perch, average size of perch was smaller than Curlew, they would have went back in the water if they weren't corked in the ice hole.   Hooked a few too small crappie that went back in the water.

Took the wife on her very first ice fishing trip.  We drove 2 hours down to Elk Creek Res, near Elk River, Idaho.  Ice was probably 16 inches thick.  Had a blast.  The Elk River Lodge had a fun tournament, 199 people entered.  Top prize was $1,000.  We ended up catching 9 trout, 5 rainbows and 4 Brook trout.  Wife caught 5 and I caught 4.  We won a couple of raffle prizes.  Weather was really nice, no wind and about 38 degrees.

The husband and I did a recon mission to curlew lake today to get our bearings for tomorrow’s fishing. It looks like 9-11 inches for ice. We were going to walk it but knowing there’s plenty of ice I think we’ll side by side it instead. We talked to a couple of really nice guy’s from Spokane out there, they actually had caught some pretty decent large mouth bass which was surprising.

Well, gave it our all on Curlew last week and part of this week. First day was decent, found a good spot with lots of consistent schools swimming through and some random trout cruzin’ by. Got slow after 11 which was frustrating because the schools were still there but would not take our night crawlers which was all we had. I knew there were a few members here that have successfully fished Curlew so I got some good bait advice from them after a few more super slow days. Finally our last day, we got out there before day light, snowing, correct bait and quiet ice and as fast as we could get our gear down in the water we were reeling them up one after another. I was impressed with the sizes, they were super fat and heavy. Good times.

When we were just pups yet, my buddy and I were jigging for panfish on one of the local lakes and we only had a small hand auger that drilled a 4-5" hole.  He thought it was a good idea to put out a couple tipups we had with some shiners we had caught. A flag goes off and he latched onto a huge northern.  It's head came out of the hole and I grabbed it but it would not fit through the hole.  I was not letting go.  He grabbed the ice axe and starts chopping away to enlarge the hole.  After 10 minutes or so we finally got it through.  I am glad there were no cellphone cameras then.  That would have been a comedy special on it's own.

Just saw some clown and his dog out on some sketchy ice last week. Pisses me off! If he and his dog fell through I would have felt obligated to try and  save the dog putting my life in danger.

Ya I'm pretty well done ice fishing this year, plenty of open water to boat on and two or three wallys is a lot easier to clean than a bucket of perch  :chuckle:
