I know people get upset for this thread to go up early but some people have deer dropping their antlers on private property. Those are usually my early finds in late December early January.

:chuckle:
Must have a flatbed to get those babies home?🤔

Agreed. Should propose a shed hunting season to give the ungulates a break during their hardest time of year.

They can’t manage anything correctly , u think even saying that is a great idea , they do that and u can bet you will be paying for a permit
-
Walked up on this guy and then he took off. He only had one side to begin with when I first saw him. Then I saw him a couple minutes later with nothing. Looked around a bit and found a couple drops of blood and it was laying in the snow

I know…they could screw up a wet dream. But between the drought and blue tongue last year, increasing predator numbers every year and the tough winter we’re already having, they need all the help they can get. Even if they could just get until March 15 or April 1 before people start pushing them all over the countryside it would help them out.

Well too start do you predator hunt ? And not just during regular big game season.in the off season if every hunter did That would help ten times more than that , blue tongue and drought yes were super rough , how many people actually shed hunt for blacktail sheds not many , I’m not saying your wrong but look giving more regulation won’t help , maybe by talking to other people about the concerns helps but let’s not ask for another regulation , the issues with the herds are because of mismanagement

I don’t have the slightest clue of what’s going on with blacktail populations, I didn’t know we were discussing strictly black tail wintering areas. All I know is in eastern Washington we already have a *censored* ton of snow and winter isn’t even half way over, a buncha guys hiking around in pushing deer all over isn’t easy on them. That’s all I’m saying.
Did you notice my profile picture? Nope, I don’t do any predator hunting in the wintertime LOL

Nice blackie shed spoon

Nice blackie shed spoon
Thanks buddy. Looking for the other side right now.
-
Agree w ya highcountry hunter, local blacktail have it a bit easier in the winter, my gripes about people pushing animals around too soon are more for those Eastside critters that really need to be left alone. Have a pic of a spike blacktail on my camera that already dropped, seems really early for a young one.

Lol didn’t even look at the pic and that’s great most people complaining about it though don’t predator hunt which will help them the most , and I love picking up fresh sheds much like anyone I just wait when it comes to the east side and I know a lot of others who don’t , not trying to be a jerk just pointing out a lot of folks don’t hunt predators and complain about the herd sizes
-
First brown of the year. I was driving around the farm looking for coyotes when I spotted a buck packing only one side. He started to run and his antler just popped off while I was watching. First time I have ever seen one drop.
-
Sure... You know that they are like a skink and if chased this time of year will drop antlers and run away to save their own life! How dare you! ... Nice find! Lol
-
I know you are being funny, but Sadly a lot of jerks do it on purpose, for that exact reason.
-
Oh yes Bone. I know a few of the areas over by me that used to get patrolled all winter by guys have actually gotten better. At least when I'm in those areas I don't see as many random rigs creeping along the feeding areas. I think new fences by the road and new homes being put up in some of the areas have kept people away too. I feel like if your out doing it and someone reports you they should do the same thing as poaching. Take whatever gear you have and impound your vehicle. Make you pay for being a *censored*.
-

I see it all time :( if your not the person that is out looking for them early, someone else will be :chuckle:
-
I do not think it is too bad on the wet side with Blacktail Deer, they do not seem to get so spooked if you are in the woods this time of year. They just trot a little ways away & are almost immediatly hidden in the dense, dark west side forest.
-
No the stress comes from the nutrient shortage and ice and snow and the cold temps. I wouldn't think the Westside blacktails have any loss of forage during the regular winters and temps are usually pretty tolerable.
-
Got one!

Nice big two! Black tail I am guessing? :dunno:

Found a fresh one this weekend!
-
With the amount of snow yet on the ground here in the Methow (thigh deep in majority of places) kinda early to be out and yes still tough on the deer getting around without being pushed unnecessarily.
-
Knee deep to a tall Indian at my place in the Methow
-
Don’t discourage anyone for going out and looking for sheds, snow on the ground or not. No body is pursuing deer right now. You bump the deer maybe 50 yards or so and they settle down. Remember the go outside and play stickers? love seeing folks getting sheds and getting fired up about this stuff. God created these critters, just like the birds...they do not sow or reap or store away in barns yet our father feeds them.

Believe it or not. These sheds are from deer that shed on Oct. 19th 2021!!! :dunno: except for the spike. Also had a 4x3 (the wife's target animal) that shed before the season even started. We have not found his sheds. We think he did it to avoid getting shot :chuckle: :chuckle:. Will be interesting to see what happens in 2022.

That is crazy! I have not seen that before! I have heard of deer shedding in December but not 2 months before that!
-
All the younger deer , small 2's and spikes are still carrying for the most part.
-
It’s funny how quiet it is around here during late February lol. I get it. I’m busy too :chuckle:
-
Found a couple of previous years, small ones, on an afternoon hike - tromping through the woods on Couger Mountain, Issaquah. Nice way to get some excercise!

IMO I don’t think him posting a freshie in 2022 has as much effect as the shed hunting influencers including the hush guys do. Seems as if they have engrained in people these days that if you ain’t out there every week as soon as the snow melts that you ain’t gonna find squat.
That being said yes lots of people don’t post stuff anymore for good reasons.

There were folks out, I didn't actually get to do the loop I wanted cuz others went that way ahead of me. Took 10 mi to find that one and only b/c I stumbled on a fresh trail.

Hushing 😂 those guys are ruining a lot of things. Not a fan. I don’t think posting horns on this site will have much effect but the so called “influencer’s “ will be the death of western outdoors as we know it, just my opinion but I already see the effects- specifically with shed hunting. Eric and the hushin boys took A fun excuse to roam the woods in the spring and turning it into a big competition and war zone. Rant over! Sorry guys but naches is right

Got out for a little hike this weekend and after a while of circling was able to match up the set! Rosie sheds are starting to drop in the coast range!

I haven't watched the hush videos, but there are definitely places where shed hunting has been a big deal for a while. I went near Jackson, Wyoming once in 2014. Shed hunting opened May 1. On opening morning there were guys lined up with pack strings crossing the Gros Ventres river at midnight, galloping to where the elk were and doing their searching by flashlight. You would see these guys coming out with multiple horses loaded with sheds at sunrise. We did a more normal 7 am start and one person in our group found one shed. It was crazy and really not very fun.
I like to go to places that aren't popular and just hike around. Not into the competitive nature of that kind of thing. Probably why I don't find many sheds.

No it was open sage hills.

More fun, 2022

Great looking sheds. Way yo get out with the kids.

We go out at least one day a week, usually 2-3 times. Lots of miles but our aussies are the key. Couple more from 2022, keep the pile growing!

Nice work teacherman! Those are all really nice whitetails!

Awesome teacher. Way to get the kids out

We were in there tonight looking for the other side for a few hours and I actually think we saw him. Looked up and about 200 yds up the ridge there was a GIANT of a WT standing in an opening watching us. My wife is new to whitetail being from AK and she thought it was a cow elk.
-
Look close, it is there, might be typical!!! They are homebodies
-
Steep and deep today. We put the miles on in Hells Canyon with the dogs.
-
Been there, that is as steep and deep as it gets! Great antler!
-
another Blacktail from a couple weeks ago - hiking the extra mile paid off!
-
Got a few!
-
Nice find. Some of the bigger elk have dropped around my place. Still have two two point and two five point elk packing. It is weird how some drop early and others hold on.

Have you found any big ones on your place yet? I can imagine you have some good bulls there!!
-
Rainier10 you reminded me of a time I was watching the elk around a friend's place waiting for them to drop so I could go find some sheds. We kept seeing all the smaller bulls running around with antlers still into April and then one day the big wrecking crew of old boys showed up and they all had velvet antlers out to the second brow tines already! They were WAY ahead of the younger bulls. It was really odd.
-
Not a shed, but my daughter found a pig head on some public land while we were scouting for turkey. No luck on any actual sheds yet :dunno:
-
A freshie road horn and a good one from I think last year!
-
Nice job Eric! I can seem to find one this year.

Saw quite a few guys packing a single or two on thier backs.
Talked to a couple guys that had 9 ( they really didn't want to talk to much ) almost like they were nervous . All I found was a Spike elk side .

Ya I got a few bedrooms marked, these were chewed, kicked a squirrel off one of them lol
These are my best to date, from 2 years ago
-
I’d just like to find one nice paddle
Just one
Well done sir
-
@KFhunter
As for the moose sheds....do you find them in super thick cover or more open areas. I have a few winter bedrooms marked too and I am doing something wrong. I have been looking for three bulls sheds with no success yet and the area isn't that vast....just thick. The open areas, where I would expect to find them have proven fruitless so far.
Thanks for any advice you willing to give.
Oh...and that set from a couple years ago is pretty awesome.
-
I'm no expert, I just walk around looking for turds :chuckle:
All of them have not been super thick, these last 4 were in a thinning area that was done 4 years or so ago, they sawed up the reprod and piled it
Others have been on fingers with those waxy leaves that stay green, not oregon grape they're smooth

Thanks....I will keep up the search. In 2 miles of trail / road, we counted 60+ piles of poop. We have trail cam pics with antlers and a week later...no antlers....they have to be close. To med/small moose and one brute I would love to find.

I'd say you're dialed in, super "moosy" and I grid walk, any faint trail and I run it out, find depressions where they're laying down. They seem to.like small benches just below a rocky finger.
Good luck!
Oh and a as it lays pic for reference

Wow, that’s awesome KFhunter, don’t you kinda hate it when you find the old ones! You wonder how the heck you missed them last year!!

This one had a chewed off drop kicker coming from the middle of the paddle if you look at the black stump there, woulda been cool to find unmolested
