Has the area around Shelton Washington ever been known for large Roosevelt bulls? In terms of antler size?
-
I have always seen raghorn size bulls on satsop side. Maybe some bigger ones out of skokomish side. In satsop the elk are pretty regular and predictable. Although herds aren't big they were easy to target once located. Tribe has keys to timberlands and accesses it before general season pretty hard there. I have seen them shoot some fairly decent bulls from satsop side. One needs an access permit from green diamond to get into that herd.

Been out in matlock for 11 years and haven't seen any bulls worth calling big. Out towards the olympic national in the skok unit though I have seen some big bulls

The difference between a draw only/permit area and general tag area.

I was just curious cuz I picked up an old taxidermied head mount that was supposedly shot right out of Shelton. The guy didn't give me a specific direction though. Its a Roosevelt and it's pretty big. Scores around 370+ he thought. Was shot in the 70's from what I gathered.
-
Sounds cool!! I would certainly get it scored. Its very possible it came from that area, although that far back it could have come from many places on the westside. I believe we don't see those giant bulls today largely to low age class and forage quality due to changes in logging practices in many areas.

Would you be willing to post a pic?? I saw a 5x5 in satsop this year that was the biggest bull I’ve seen out there in a while. Up the skoke there can be bigger bulls but I haven’t seen one in a long while

A friend of my dad's has a bull that he got on some farm along the Satsop river back in the 70s I believe, and it's listed in the Boone & Crockett book. I don't remember what it scores but I've seen it and it's huge. So, that's not really "Shelton" but not too far.

Yes I will try to. My cell phone pics are always too big and the site rejects them. What's the easiest way to downsize them?
-
Would love to know who you got it from. I may be able to help pinpoint the location of the kill.

Take a screenshot. That usually brings it down to an acceptable size to post.

Unfortunately I don't have a full name. Guys name was Clint and he got it from the guy who shot it and had it mounted. I don't know if he even has contact with the hunter anymore.
-
Pretty sure I know that head. Almost positive that came out of a collection that was sold off a few years ago as the guy sold off his mounts since he was downsizing to a much smaller house. I'll confirm with a friend who is in the know tomorrow.

Wow that thing is pretty cool. Just me or does it seem really wide?

Well I would like to know more about it so if they know for certain where it came from shoot me a PM.

It's 44" wide inside spread

I would not make that argument. The elk I'm speaking of all reside within the skokomish unit.
The big park bulls I've seen are just that. Elk that spend the vast majority of their lives within the national park boundary or travel in and out throughout the year.

FYI there is no otc season for the skoke unit.

100% correct. That's why I made the comment I did.

Ilive in cle elum. two weeks ago we had 75 elk milling around at the east end of town. The deer and elk are looking for a snowless area to bed.
-
We use to see some huge bulls north of Shelton, up the Skoke valley, Spider Lake, Pine lake, Brown’s Creek area up through the 80s. That area was hit hard in the late 80s by poachers and the Skokes. There were also some huge bulls around Lake Cushman. They use to fire a cannon every morning to get the elk off the golf course greens.
My Dad worked for Simpson. We mad many trips up to Camp Govey and the upper Skoke river.
-
Even areas not "known" for big bulls can easily have a couple big rosies in it. The big old rosies seem to stay hidden better, which is how they get old, and with the dense cover in many areas it is likely that a really big one could come from anywhere, they are just more rare in some areas.
-
Those big bulls only show themselves when the time is right, for them. I've seen some absolute bruisers in the area. Just never with the big herds.
-
I wonder exactly where this bull came from then? I got another pic of it I'll post up. It's pretty impressive.
-
I'll bet it came from the upper Hamma Hamma, 1980. just bcuz.

I believe I've identified the second owner and am working on getting in contact with him. So I can hopefully get the original story, if it's still available. The only reason I would argue the hamma hamma area is most of those big bulks up there crown instead of whale tails. But who knows. .

The guy I got it from supposedly got it from the original owner. He sent me a couple other pics but I don't know that I saved them. I'm still searching. Between taking hundreds of pics of my kids and work stuff and saving Zardoz's memes I have ten thousand pics to rifle through! Lol

It'd be nice if people would slow down and stop hitting them too. A driver took out two the other night.

Found them!
