Title: Tripods for tall guys
Post by: Stein on January 23, 2022, 10:25:22 PM
I finally am looking at dropping some loot on a taller tripod so I can glass standing up.  A have a straight scope, so not helping there.  Floor to my eye is 68" and it sounds like I can subtract 2-3" for the head and 2-3" for the adapter which puts me at about a 62-64" tripod.

I have been looking through GoHunt as I have $100 in points and came up with the Vortex High Country II and Sirui ST-124 with the VA-5 head.

Before you "buy once, cry once" or similar, I know they aren't in the same league.  I'm also not packing around a $4k spotter and spending 25 hours a day behind it.

I glass for 30-60 minutes tops, don't need to know anything other than if it has horns or not and hunt a week a year.

I think I would be very happy with the aluminum Vortex, the only thing is I'm thinking I want a better head.  I have the Vortex SST now and panning is horrible but the HC II has a much better head, albeit the single control to tighten both horizontal and vertical which I don't like.  The SST is ok, good enough for what I do but way too short for anything over sitting.

So, is the Sirui that much better?  Any other options for tall tripods (62") in the $200-300 range (including head) I should be looking at?

This is what I use. 67 5/8” fully extended. With a straight spotter it might land right at your eye if your 6’ tall. Little heavy but they have carbon fiber options I pack it anyway. Legs you can open up pretty far.

I use the promaster Jackelope posted, works well for me and I'm 6'2". If your much above that it might be a little short in the standing position.

I have the Sirui T-004SK with the VA-5 head with the Vortex Razor HD 11-33x50 Angled Spotting Scope and absolutely love it. The angled spotter helps when I'm standing. I'm 6' 2" and have no issues. If you have a straight spotter you may have to bend just a tad while standing depending on how tall you are. Best tri-pod I have ever owned hands down  :twocents:

Fully extended is 63.10 inches. I have the shorter version and really like it.

Just ordered this setup for my spotting scope.  Should be easier to pack than my 30" (collapsed) aluminum.

Thanks for the replies.

That's fairly pricey, how does it compare to Sirui?

I’d personally call Joel at cameraland NY.  Tell him what you’re after. He’ll play 20 questions with you and work out what works best for you and your budget.  He gave me a discount because I’m a member of the Rokslide forum as well. Not sure if you are. He’s not an advertiser here so I’m not sure telling him you’re a hunt wa member will do anything for you.

If you’re talking about my setup, I have no experience with anything other than that one.

Thanks, might do that.  I'm on there a time or two a year, bought my bow off a guy a couple years back.
