Title: Bang for the Buck AR Trigger
Post by: phildobaggins on February 09, 2022, 08:35:54 AM
I can't stand the mil-spec trigger on my AR. It came in a basic lower parts kit and it needs to go.

Who's got some experience with AR triggers and can recommend one around $150? Please tell me if I'm smoking Brandon's crack pipe for asking for a decent trigger at this price range.

I have these on a few ARs.  They go on sale at Palmetto State and other places quite often for $119.99.  I love these triggers

Thanks for the suggestions. I don't know if I'd like the feel of a straight trigger and 2.5lbs sounds a bit light. The Timney may fit the bill. I'll let this thread marinate for the rest of the day and am going to order the curved Timney tonight if no one pops in with other suggestions.

Unbelievable difference for my AR.  Can be found for less if you shop. I went with the SD E.

My AR literally sits in the safe for 10 months out of the year and only comes out to excite my non-gun friends, or to go shoot winter coyotes. Which is why I'm looking for a trigger now  :chuckle: A $300+ trigger makes no sense for me ;) Thanks for the Larue link.

+1 for larue. FANTASTIC triggers for the money.

Thanks for the input, Karl! Do you have any experience to compare the Larue 2 stage to the CMC or the Timney? I don't mind spending an extra $50 if it's going to be worth it.

Thanks, I'm into the curved trigger!

I have 4-5 CMC triggers in different AR's and they've all been great.  I've bought most of them from this place and been very satisfied with their service, free shipping too.

I own a couple of Rise Armament Rave 140 triggers and a couple of POF triggers and I've been happy with both. You can find the Rave 140s sometimes on sale for $100-120. I just looked at the POF trigger price and they went up a lot since I bought one ($200 vs. $130 I spent for mine a couple of years ago).

Most of my friends have Elftmann or Larue triggers and they are happy with them.

I got my RRA two-stage as part of my LPK and it's excellent.
$150 for everything.

Phildo, I went down the same rabbit hole as you. Ended up with a timney, cmc, and a larue. For my needs the larue was the winner. Thats just me though. I'm a bolt gun guy. AR's are wildly unexciting to me.

Super Dynamic Enhanced is what I have.  If you go to their page (or youtube), and watch the vids of the owner talking about the different triggers and their applications, you will get a better overall understanding of AR triggers.

I love my LaRue triggers, ...however best bang for the buck, I think is RRA, great triggers, and a little cheaper.

I think you can improve most triggers by sanding and polishing the moving and contact surfaces. I've improved many triggers with out even touching the sear.

For a military style trigger I run a BCM and it is very smooth in my SBR. For my 224 Valkyrie I have a Triggertech that was a special run and it is about a 2# pull. I like it for what I want it for.

I've sanded and polished triggers a few times.
Did it in my ar10 and and the added recoil or something was messed up. Trigger didn't reset right. Hammer was falling with the bolt ,3 or 4 round burst. Then you could charge it and shoot again with the same result.
Never had it fire out of battery ,but that seemed like it was going to happen.
Never had anything like that happened with ar15 though.
And I've sanded a few.
But since I wanted to hunt with it,and be "safe" and all.
I bought one of these.
Free shipping and all.
It's not a match trigger ,but leaps and bounds better than factory or milspec.

Look on graniteridge outfitters ,jmt sabor 99 dollars shiped.
For some reason my phone won't paste the link.

I have use the Hiperfire EDT, and for $100 it's well worth it. Has multiple springs so you can get a 4 1/2 - 5 1/2 trigger pull. Clean break and short pull!

I also highly recommend the Larue. I have several along with  JP Enterprise ( nice trigger but twice the money) and a Rock River National match varmint ( too light of pull in my opinion for hunting) but very clean break. Of the 3 I still prefer the Larue. Check out Alpine rifle supply, they have the Larue for $94 delivered.

I ended up getting impatient because I also got a new scope and wanted to use the new trigger on sight in before this weekend. I went to Sportsman's and bought a Timney for $139 HAHA. We'll see how I like it.

Nothing special. Somebody turn me on to an Anderson mil spec trigger. I like it I put it in my Ruger 204 no complaints. I’m a fan of Timney but that’s a little bit over your price range of 150. GL😉🥃🇺🇸

If I hadn’t posted this thread I would’ve impulse bought a Rise that looked awesome that was on a site that had 15% off all triggers and it would’ve been like $130 shipped. The Timney feels super good, looking forward to shooting with it. Incredibly crisp 😍

For some reason a couple reviews I read on the JMT trigger turned me off, didn’t want to wait a week to get it and not like it. 🤷‍♂️

Yup same here, quality product for the money.

I don't really know, maybe the Timmy trigger is adjustable.
The sabor is drop in ,probably right at 4lb ,not adjustable, plug and play ,drop in ,you get what you get.
I do remember though ,I put blue locktight on all the set pins, do to recoil on my ar10 ,and that baby is still rock solid in there and never had a problem with it ,as far as function and all that.

So that might be something to think about, blue locktight if you don't plan on change triggers all the time.
If you drop in and plan on leaving it,lock tight it.
If you change it all the time then don't.

It's just something to think on. I've had every part come lose on AR at some point except barrel nut,and I think that's just cause it's torqued.

Between wife, kids and myself, I think I've put in 8 LaRue triggers.

I put one in one of my ARs quite a few years ago, and liked it so much I never tired anything else.

They routinely show up for $89, and it is a better trigger than I am a marksman.

IMHO , it is the one nonnegotiable upgrade for an AR.

They have pretty slick deals on QD scope mount/scope combos as well. Larue is my go to for any first upgrades for the AR platform.

I have one with the Timney and one with a Rise Armament RA 140 and I actually like the RA better. If you ever need another look at a RA.

Another great option is the ALG Defense ACT trigger. From the way I understand it, ALG is Geissley’s sister company. I have a both, and can’t tell the difference until I look at the receipt. I also like the CMC, never tried the Larue. I’m like others, bolt guns excite me… AR’s are just something I have because I can.

All my ARs have Geisselle triggers on them, and they are fantastic triggers.

But, If I was to do it again, I would be buying Larue Triggers. they are close or as good as my Geisselle triggers, but 1/4 - 1/3 the cost.
I just wish I would have known that before I invested in Geisselle.

So many people have agreed on Larue. Having never shot one, and being obsessed with the Timney I got, I don’t see how I could want anything more from a trigger.

What is so good about the Larue, other than the price? What makes the Geisselle  so special to call for their price?

Shoot them, is there creep? How do they break, then reset? To much overtravel?

I shot my buddy's DD Mk12, that had a Geisselle trigger, and loved it. I bought my Geisselles in one batch. A couple months later I shot another AR with a Larue, and liked it just as much.
Either are night and day above stock triggers.

Timney makes decent triggers. A couple of my hunting rifle have Timney's.
