The guy at Wal-Mart left the store trigger lock on it.
In the pic you can see my leathermen and a hacksaw blade.
I got it off ,but it wasn't the highlight of my day.
And yes I know ,made in China, not a huge fan of that.
But 164.00 before tax ,I couldn't help my self.
Somebody told me it's some kind of Winchester clone ,knockoff.
The kid seems like he likes turkey hunting better than deer hunting,not sure if it's the gobble sound and waiting or what.
But trying to go all out this year for him.
He is currently using a 20 gauge Mossberg pump ,with most the blueing gone,old hand me down. Which does the job and all. But figured this 12 gauge ,with the extra full choke may extend his range ,and the amount of shot down range.
He is a big boy,bigger than me at 14 ,so recoil is a non issue.
And the extra full choke,chokes on midway looked like only a few left. Looked like to me ,people are buying the extra full choke ,chokes as an alternative to buying a dedicated turkey choke at 50-60 bucks a pop.
When I ordered yesterday it said only 3 left on the extra full choke at 16.99 and I got one. So sounds like only two left.

I have heard some 2nd hand accounts of rough chambers on these Chinese clones, which is super easy to fix. other wise they seem to run pretty decent, and are worth the money spent!

Nice! Hey just want you to know that I think you have to use size 4shot or smaller for turkey. But he should be happy with that present

I'll probably just stop and pickup another box of that Federal Grand Slam in size 4 shot then.
That way he has one box for practice and pattern,and checking distance,and one box for hunting.

The gun came with a modified choke in it.
So I just wanted a cheap upgrade from that.

You don’t have to have a dedicated choke it has its benefits sure but it also depends on where your hunting. I hunt in some pretty open ground so you can get spotted from a distance. If you branch off of turkey and get into upland full chokes are good for very late season.

so DONT let him ditch that pump 20 ga!, if he is really into turkeys, that gun is really a great one to refurbish and upgrade. the new shot, cerekoting and choke options make that compact 20 a very nice lightweight carry for mountain bird hunting..

It's the 500 version but a 20 gauge. Full choke takes up to 3in shells also.
But here's a pic of him with his first grouse of the year last year. Holding the 20 gauge,it's an older one I know that.
He is 6 ft ,like 250 lb ,he is not small by any means .

My son has killed 3 birds with a .410 at 45+ yards each...using the TSS 9 shot loads...yes, 9 shot (TSS)...he started with a 20 gauge, but then a few years later broke his collar bone just before the season (mountain biking) so I got him the Savage .410 turkey gun (single shot) and put a red dot on it...he refuses to use anything else (other than his bow now). If you have a 12 gauge, get an actual turkey choke, some TSS 7 shot loads and whack and stack the birds! Personally we are moving more towards archery and even at that, using traditional bows...which will max our range to 20 yards and make it even more fun.

I was thinking of giving this a try this year just to add some complexity to the hunt. What broadhead are you using? Are you looking for vital or decapitation shots?

I bought one of these last summer. The Mossberg Super Bantam Youth Turkey model. So far I'm liking it, but be forewarned you may have to use a slip-on recoil pad on top of the stock extensions in order to get it to fit you. I have what I would call a medium sized torso and the LOP was just too short with the extension, so I had to add a slip-on recoil pad. So if you're a big guy you might have problems with the LOP. Super lightweight and scaled down, though, which I wanted.

I use a Remington 870 Wingmaster .410 and those Apex Turkey Ninja #9.5 TSS shells. My gun has a 25” fixed full barrel. I agree with the other members who say a .410 makes the hunt much more fun and with the TSS shells it will ethically take birds out to 35-40 yards. I’ll never go back to a 20 or 12. That being said, my 12 year old uses his 12ga semi auto with 3” #4 lead and a primos undertaker Turkey choke. It allows him a better margin of error.
I'm curious, does your 870 have a scaled down receiver to compliment the smaller .410 barrel, or is it the same size receiver as a 12 gauge?

Exactly. My first Rio was taken with a Model 12 solid rib barrel gun in 16ga (with the short chamber). It's a nickel steel gun made in 1917. There's just nothing like them anymore.

Nice, I own the same exact 12 gauge. That is designed after a Winchester 1300 shotgun. I bought a Carlsons Long Beard XR X-tra full turkey choke for mine. It has the .660 restriction and is a 50 yard turkey buster. You will enjoy that 12 guage, they aren't bad at all.Thanks that gives me more confidence that what I bought will work for my boy needs.

He can use up to BB shot ,with 3in shells for waterfowl too with the extra full .
Most 3in shell are right around 1550 velocity. Which is the longest shell the gun can take.
I've never bought chokes ,and had to deal with all the little technical stuff. I got the right threads,size,all that jazz.
Now I have to wait till middle of March for the boy to take it out and pattern it.
