We really enjoy taking kids hunting. I was recently asked about how young of a youth hunter could come hunting, here was my reply:
As long as they can hold up the gun and hit a target and have hunter education or a deferral, go ahead and enter them in the contest!

Can they still put in for it if they are already 16 but we were able to purchase their youth tags before their birthday?

By state regs if you buy the license and tag before they turn 16 you are good for the youth hunt even if they are 16 during the youth hunt but this is also Bearpaws give away so I will leave that to him.

I think Russ is right, but I would suggest asking a regional office to verify, try to get a reply in writing.

Dale, I'm in for the usual $150 donation. Thank you for doing this again

Russ is correct. That's what I tell my whole Hunters Ed class. If you turn 16 this year, go buy your license before your Birthday!

I'll never forget my first turkey hunt. My avatar is that bird. Bucked hay for the land owner for two days to hunt and camp on his property just North of Cusick. Good luck to all you kids... and my son who is entered.

Time passes quickly, today the kids and families arrived. We also have three other kids here with their dads for the hunt, one of the other kids is Trey, he won the contest two years ago. They went shooting to check their guns and then I snapped a couple photos of RJ and Wesley with their families. Then we had a spaghetti dinner. Everyone just headed to their rooms so we can get a nice early start tomorrow. We’ve got plenty of birds scouted, it should be a great hunt.
-
Hope to see photos tomorrow, with more smiles. :)
-
Good luck! Hope you all have a great time...
-
Looks like a blast for the kids.
🤞Looks like this mourning should have less rain on the horizon.
Where you can whack'em and stack'em.
Good luck you all .👍
-
Saturday morning was a bust, amazingly we did not get a single bird, a few birds came within range but for one reason or another the kids couldn't shoot. In the afternoon it went much better, we ended up with several birds taken by Trey, Bruno, and Wesley (one of the contest winners).
-
Sunday morning was tough again, no birds taken, but Wesley went Varmint hunting and got a rockchuck and a couple squirrels. Sunday evening Trey passed a couple jakes (holding out for a long beard) and Tatum got a bird her first successful hunt.
-
We told Wesley he got the spring slam: turkey/squirrel/rockchuck
-
Unfortunately RJ (the other contest winner) did not get a bird, but I think he had a great time as did all the kids. It was fun listening to all the kids telling their hunting stories each day at lunch and in the evening at dinner time.
Read RJ's Story: https://hunting-washington.com/smf/index.php/topic,269738.0.html
-
We sent the kids home with some various turkey calls (RJ was already getting pretty good with his pot call), and enough ammo for future target practice and hunting. Wesley is getting a mount of his bird, a fan/wings/beard mount like the one in the photo below.
Thanks to everyone on the forum who participated in the contest and also to the members who so graciously donated so the winners would also get all the extra merchandise and mounts. :hello:
-
All of them were great kids we enjoyed being in camp with them and everyone
Wesley was on a mission for sure👍😁
-
Congrats to everyone, love these youth hunts!! Grandpa and grandson out hunting together, what's better than that?
