Well, here’s Haley. I went out to Menoken today, about a three hour drive from my house in Fargo. She’s a British lab (Irish) & will steal your heart. She’s having a hard time with the crate tonight, but other than that the first day went well. She’ll never be Maggie, but it’ll be fun to see what she can become.
-
Crates, shmates.. Haley would like to sleep on your pillow I’m sure. Pretty little gal, congrats on your new little pal ;)
-
Hah! You’re right about sleeping on my pillow. She likes to lay at my feet when I’m sitting in my chair & follow me everywhere. I have a puppy size training dummy I zip tied a pheasant wing to and she’s all about that. She pounces on it & attacks it like it’s keeping her from getting on Noah’s ark & the rain is starting.
-
Congratulations! They all have a way of finding a special place in your heart.
-
Good looking pup. I’ve been waiting for you to get a pup after you lost Maggie. What an awesome start to an incredible journey with your new best friend.

Cute lil booger, one of your t-shirts in the crate, really worked wonders on our pups

Thanks. I’ll try that tonight. I fed her in there this morning, she’s been in & out of it a couple time since on her own.

Nice looking put now come the making of memories

Oh, looks like a little ball of fun.

Thanks everyone. Training is going well for the first week. Can’t wait for summer when I can buy some pheasants for her.
-
Back at it! Excited for you and the training journey!
-
usually doesn't take long to be crate trained, what a cutie!

How’s It going with Haley?
-
Going pretty well. She’s a fetching machine & is extremely fast. A couple weeks ago went turkey hunting in Nebraska & stopped at big bend dam in South Dakota to let her out for a break. She’d never seen water before. She saw some ducks on the water, ran down the rip rap shore & hit the water full speed going after the ducks like navy seals after osama.

Very cool
Thank you for the update

She seems to have a lot of natural drive. I can’t wait to buy some pheasants & chuckars for her this summer.

First day retrieving from the water today. She took to it well, boat wakes didn’t bother at all. She’s starting to find the aggression/we’re not screwing around switch when we’re training & it’s fun to watch.

Very cool👍 Thank you for sharing
How long did it take for her to jump right in like that?
Was it right away or did you have to ease into it?
-
I started off just tossing he dummy in ankle deep. The first toss she was too excited & couldn’t stop fast enough so she fell into the deeper water where she had to swim. 2 more tosses I think 5-8’ of shore and then she was all about it. Had some throws about 40’ from shore & she brought them all back. At the end of the hour session she was jumping off the dock to fetch the dummy.

Nice 👍

Had Haley out fir her first session of being broken in to gunfire today. We walked around tossing her training dummy with her on a 30’ check cord. When I tossed the dummy I’d shoot the training pistol. Did the first couple shots inside the bird pocket of my hunting vest to muffle it & got pretty quickly to shooting it almost right over her. She never seemed to even notice the shots, so I think the session went well. I felt kind of bad though, because I forgot her biscuits for the reward,

That’s sounds like a good session
I’m going to be doing that with my Britt soon

I’d forgotten how loud primers are by themselves. I’ll bring ear muffs next time,

Today we introduced Haley to live birds for the first time. She’ll be 8 months next week. We went to a hunting preserve and used chukars & a bird launcher. We started off with a training bumper in the launcher hid in some tall grass. When she would get close to the launcher we’d set it off to kick up the bumper & shoot the starter pistol. After about 1/2 hour of that we moved on to chukars & shotguns. She found that pretty exciting & was super aggressive about getting after them when she saw them. One bird didn’t fly so she chased it down, pounced on it & brought it straight back. She retrieved all of them to hand. I was pretty pleased, I don’t think I could have expected as good a showing as she gave this morning.

Had Haley out for our second session with live birds today & here’s her take for the day. We put out 10 chukar & she found 9. She used her nose all morning, she tracked one for 150 yards before it flew. She dug up one that burrowed almost 2’ into the bottom of the reeds & grass & brought it back w/o tearing it up. She caught 2 birds that were flying- one got to the end of the hedgerow & started to fly, she got it @ 2’ off the ground, the other was flying by & she pounced on it & brought it back. 8 months old.

Haley was 9 months old on Friday & Saturday we had her out for her first duck hunt. First hunt with wild birds, first time she’d seen a duck, first time hunting from a boat and she did well. In the pre dawn dark, when we were throwing decoys out of the boat, she felt like she needed to get out of the boat to bring the decoys back, so she did! After the first volley she knew if we got up to look to the sky for ducks, and if the guns went boom, she would move around to see past the cattails & look for the splash on the water. For the day she made 2 retrieves from the boat back to the boat & 2 from shore. All in all, a good outing for a puppy‘s first time. All those hours of work in the back yard & tips from people on here are paying off!

Very cool thank you for posting her progress 👍

Well Haley is coming along nicely. She’s 10 months old last weekend. This past week we were out hunting 4 of the 5 days. My friend visiting from Washington & I walked 18 miles, Haley did a lot more than that. We only hunted public land & land open to public hunting & she found wild pheasants every day. Anytime a puppy finds wild birds on public land, I’ll take that as a successful day. My visiting friend was impressed with her. He was also impressed with the Scheel’s store.

Very cool
Thank you again for posting her progress

She is a beautiful dog.

Well Haley’s first year is a wrap & id call it a success. We hit the field 41 times including the trios out to release chukars from the launchers & stake out pheasants for her. She found birds every time out. She retrieved ducks both from shore and the boat. One morning she even brought back the decoys we were tossing out of the boat! Last week she flushed up 8 hens from 30” of snow during an ice storm. Once my buddy’s dog flushed a rooster. It learned it was a mistake to fly by Haley because she jumped up, snatched it out of the air & brought it to me. She was 10 months old for that one. She’ll sit steady & watch me ride away on the back if a pickup for over 1/4 mile & not move until she hears the whistle.
Duck season was poor this year, so we didn’t get to work much in that this year, but next year we’ll get better at it. All in all, I’m pleased with her & think she’ll be a good hunting companion!
