Title: Long eye relief spotting scope recommendations
Post by: craigapphunt on February 21, 2022, 10:09:31 AM
Ill start by saying a newbie to the spotting scope world I've always just packed binos but lately have been finding myself wishing I had a spotter to pick apart distant hillsides and get better looks at animals I've spotted. I currently pack a set of maven 9x45 which I love to death for close in off hand and off a tripod can spot animals at respectable distances. I hunt deer, elk, bear, and cougar on foot or bike as far from other people as I can get. I also wear glasses which really limits my optic options. Essentially i need a minimum of 17mm eye relief. I've set my budget at $1k which so far I've only found a couple spotter that meet my requirements the athlon ares 20-60x85 and the maven s2 12-27x56. Obviously they are completely opposite from each other. So my question is this would you recommend one of the two spotters I've listed over the other or would you possibly have a different recommendation for me considering my requirements?

Are you sure you need that eye relief?  I wear glasses and usually just take them off when glassing or roll the eye rubber back if I need a quick look.

I'm in the market for upgrading my scope and the ones I'm considering are all in the 16-16.5 mm range and I have no problem using them.

I think would prefer it I can just see better with my glasses on at least through my binos. But to be honest I haven't  really played with it through a spotter.
