Curious if anyone here has hunted deer in Mexico and had to leave your horns and capes down there after your hunt and then work with an exporter to get them back to USA.? I am in this situation because the US border guys were complete jerks and were demanding that the skulls were absolutely bone white clean or they wouldn't allow them across so we had to leave ours down there. My outfitter has arranged with a company that takes care of everything to legally import them to USA and then ship them to us... WOndering if anyone has done this and what it cost them..? Its Mexico so I am sure it won't be cheap and when it involves a couple deer over 220" they know we want them back.....

Ya, just got home with a coues buck... I got my skull home but customs confiscated the cape b/c they found a tick... and ya, they were kind of jerks about it.
The outfitter offered a an expediter to ship my cape and horns for $350... now I wished I had done it.
Guess it was just a guy who cleans everything and then ships it, but the outfitter said he has been using him for years.

I wouldn't be suprised if there isnt a little scam going on with not letting the heads and capes across and then getting a kick back from the exporters. We are getting charged alot more than that... Its Mexico so its like the wild west. With the way the cartel is down there you never know who's getting a kick back...

It’s pretty sad you can’t get something like this across trying to follow the rules but they’re currently allowing unlimited illegal immigration at the border.

Maybe it should have got handed off to one of the illegals to carry it over. It would have made it through then.

It's not Mexico... It's US customs.

It’s never been an issue for us but getting capes squeaky is really important. There is a great taxidermist in Hermosillo that can get them perfect if they’re full of ticks.
Definitely have seen more issues with capes vs skull caps.
It’s like the dmv…if a custom guy is having a bad day he can make everyone else’s life miserable.
Hope you get everything back!

The US guys we had to deal with were only really concerned about the skulls and they had been boiled three times and wire brushed. They didn't even know to be more worried about the brain cavity than the tiny bits of dried sinew on the nose.. Earlier in the season our outfitter had no issues getting heads and capes across . I felt bad for the outfitter the US guys were downright rude to them.. Fingers crossed we will have them in a week or two and a little lighter in the wallet....

220" deer you say?
-
C’mon Scotty, ya can’t mention 220” muleys & not post pics for these guys :dunno: :chuckle: :hello:
-
Im sure I'd get bashed for paying money to go shoot pen raised deer off a feeder in the dark in cartel land.... :dunno: I will see if I have some pics. Since it wasn't a gov tag maybe I will be ok...
-
:chuckle: There isn’t one guy on this site that wouldn’t go down there to shoot a 220” muley given the chance. Those that say otherwise are liars :chuckle:

Margaritas, siestas and big deer. It is my heaven.

Margaritas, siestas and big Coues deer. It is my heaven.
Just added a little clarification for everyone. Not those big eared carp deer. 😜
-
Lol maybe it's a 220" couse :chuckle:
I could be persuaded to go to Mexico but it would pretty much only be for either a mule deer or a sheep. I've got some hangups about the country, none from firsthand experience mind you, but I could be convinced to go for the hunting.

Ya I will sleep a lot better when I have those horns in my hands again. If I had known I was having to leave it behind I would have atleast taped the thing….
