Title: Where are the BIG Turkeys at.
Post by: hunter399 on February 24, 2022, 06:11:27 AM
Just figured I'd start a topic........

) Where you headed for turkey
)Been there before,harvested there before.
) Gear you might need ,it might be muddy.
) Two Tags or one
) Group hunting or solo

You know just the details that we all may share about our Turkey hunting adventures.

I can start ......
I'll be in NE WASHINGTON ,most likely if it a weekend day.
Have my son with me. 20 gauge or 12 gauge ,No special gear really ,box turkey call,If it's muddy or bad road I'll just walk from there.
Not camping cause I live within ten miles of all my spots.
Not really e scouting cause I have a few spots, but who knows if the birds are there come april, part of the hunt I guess.
Took a few days off for hunting ,but building up some sick days as of now. Just in case.

Share if want,if you don't want then don't.

I'll be head into the a few different places, but mainly N. Central WA. Hunting private property.
Nothing special as far as gear goes, but love my old Tenzing turkey pack.
It will be all walk in Onx is loaded and could be used.
Two tags always in pocket.
there will be two of us hunting the first weekend.
First weekend we will be staying with the landowner. Rest of the trips could be trailer, tent or motel (all depends on where we decide to hunt).

Good luck to all.....shoot 'em in the face!!

3 tags because if I don't use them in the spring I can use them in the fall
I will be taking out about 8 new turkey hunters over the first 5 days of the season and the following weekend with a group of other mentor taking out around 30 first timers.
I will be in my travel trailer and staying out in the NE from the 14th until the 25th

This is probably year fifteen on my "I'm going to actually hunt turkeys this year" campaign. We will see if I actually get out.

It would be north central wa, my folks are in mazama and I see birds around and always figured that'd be a good starting place, somewhere/anywhere between there and twisp. I've got a couple different calls and a decoy but no real idea what's needed or useless lol. Good luck to you all and hopefully actually to me this year.

My usual annual walk in western Washington.
My recurve and a few arrows.
Box call, slate call, lunch.
.
Go say "hello" to a flock of turkeys, spook them when I try to take a shot...
.
Spend the rest of my time looking for where they went.
.
.
Now, if I get one of these b'tards with my recurve, I might think about driving over the hill for another..

Probably head up to my cabin in NE WA, if the grass in the back yard is free of snow I値l set out a couple decoys in the yard. I値l stay inside and start de-winterizing/cleaning, occasionally peeking out the back window. When I see a Tom come in I値l ease out the front and sneak around the side of the cabin and shoot him. Killed a lot of nice toms this way.

I may actually try  spring season this year. I found some small flocks while hiking last weekend above Bordeaux in Capital Forest. Don't have a dedicated gun, but my Stoeger 12 goose killer should do fine. Got about 30 of my coyote loads left. 2oz of copper plated 4s in a 3".  Neighbor is a very good caller, so he'll give me some pointers. What kind of call you all think?

I will walk by the annoying turkeys down by my barn and drive 1 mile to my freinds ranch and hunt on their property. Just doesn稚 feel like hunting shooting one on my property but I don稚 mind shooting one in my freinds yard😂 weird I know. I will get 2 tags and save 1 for hunting public land mountain turkeys

You may do pretty well hunting a fresh burn. The turkeys love all that emerging spring vegetation that comes in fast from a fresh burn.

Good point. Could probably pick a few pounds of mushrooms while I知 at it. I値l check if big roost trees survived and find some spots near the edges.

Here in the NE if it's lumber company land and burned.
It's a clear cut now. But along the edges, and turkeys love bugs from the slash from winter logging.
If it's state,BLM,National Forest and burns there may still be trees. If where your talking is where I think it is. It's been being cut down all winter. Sorry .

With that said ,I bet there is still turkey there.
Bugs, new growth, and logging slash to peck through, along the edges where old timber hits the burn. There will be a turkey somewhere. Locate in early mourning, will tell ya if there still around . But I'll bet they are.  Good luck.

We'll be in Central WA and NE WA.
Probably 2 tags each.  We have a couple private spots for Rio's and then we head up NE for a Merriam's.
Wife and I and 2 12 gauges, and I'll probably have my 6 year old grandson with us.
Box and slate calls.  I have a weird palate, so I can't use mouth calls.
A buddy of mine made me a cool slate call a couple yeas back, so I'm hoping to bag a gobbler using it.
Cabela's Seclusion 3D camo pattern from around 1998  :chuckle:
In central WA we'll stay at our own place.
In NE Corner we stay along Lake Roosevelt and do a little shore fishing too. :)

I will be headed to AZ to start my season with a buddy from NM. This is a pre-hunt to a hunt in MX the weekend of the WA opener.
If/when I hunt WA it will be on the Wetside solo or on the eastside and I mean the east side with some buddies (couple of friends coming from AL and GA, along with a couple here from WA). Do to work and prior trip I dont know which side of the state I'm going to play on first.
AZ/NV/CA/MX - Never have I hunted before. WA will returning to familiar spots where I have been successful but have my eyes on a few new ones. Have my eyes on completely new spot to hunt should time allow in OR with the boys from AL.
Packing light for my Southwest hunt and will bring the kitchen sink with me as I run around the Northwest.
I will be getting a minimum of 6 tags this spring and as many as 10 tags.
AZ will be with a friend, NV solo, CA solo, MX with a group, WA solo/group

I didn't buy the turkey tag.
Ya I'm cheap @$$ .
I will take the boy ,and just carry a rifle in case I see a cougar or coyote .And look for sheds and maybe put a trail cam up.
And do the calling stuff for the boy.

NE Washington and possibly in the southeast as well.  Private and public.
Harvested 5 turkeys there in 2021.
No fancy gear. :) I hunt with a side by side shotgun, hand painted camo, and carry a 42 year old box call.
Gotta have two turkey tags and one cougar tag in my pocket.
Both group and solo hunting. Two youngsters took turkeys at my spot last season!

I've only used old guns for turkey hunting, but this past year I bought a brand new dedicated turkey shotgun with the fancy camo finish, camo sling, with a fancy aftermarket turkey choke, and an extremely expensive 5-pack of TSS shells. But I'm bringing my 92 year old side by side as a backup gun. Knowing me, I'll probably leave the new gun in the car and tote the oldster around.
