Title: Time to retire
Post by: n_mathews13 on March 14, 2022, 10:37:08 AM: She made her last trip the other night, she barely made it through the season.
She has earned the right to go or stay next year if she makes it that long.

:yeah: only problem is they don't see it that way :chuckle: can barely walk but it doesn't matter, they will be at the front door waiting to go load up till the day they die. Dogs truly are man's best friend.

Last night she went back in garage and sat down facing away from me lol.

She could barely make it out of the woods from a bobcat tree so I retired her that day in December. She kept loading in the box and was excited to go but I thought I would just walk her to the trees. Came home and she had passed away in her dog house shortly after I retired her . I was just making plans for her to live the easy life :chuckle: It was tough but my dog had lived a hounds dream for 13 years and we hunted everything when she was young. She was a real warrior and had some scars to prove it. I am sure your old dog has had a great life as well-I would still let her ride along on the hunts ! Walk the old girl into some trees

She came to tailgate, I pet her.
I opened door for her and turned around and she had went to porch. Then it hit, a nice quiet ride alone before dads house to collect my thoughts.
The pup did good though

Post by: brokentrail on January 23, 2023, 03:18:27 PM: Sad day for sure. One of my beagles is at a point where he still wants to hunt but doesn't come out of his dog house for three days after, recovering. I hate to leave him home.

Best of luck to you and the retiring hound. I've owned a few blue dogs in my life, good times!

Post by: brew on January 23, 2023, 06:01:11 PM: Those are bittersweet times for sure. As a fellow houndsman who has been out of the game for years I understand. Unfortunately what many people don't understand is the amount of time and love you have to put into these dogs to make a pack. These are more of a house pet and I believe that's what drives them to do the incredible things they so. Remember the good times and remember she lived her best life. How could it be a better life than to be loved and hunt ?

It’s fantastic when it all clicks in place. Hard when they get old and/or sick.

Post by: bearpaw on January 19, 2025, 11:05:12 AM: It’s hard to watch your dogs get old but it’s just part of the cycle of life. I take my dogs hunting until they die, that’s what they live for, if they come out of their dog house and want to go to the truck we load them up and take them hunting!
