Hey guys
My grandson is one of the winners of the youth Turkey hunt with bear paw
I borrowed my brother in-laws break open single shot 20 gauge and I noticed it is a 3” chamber with a modified choke is that choke going to be too open for turkeys?
Probably a stupid question but had to ask
Thanks in advance

You can always go shoot it ,and see what she'll do on some targets.
I would think it would do the trick.👍

My boys and I all shoot 12 gauges with modified chokes for turkeys.
We shoot to 40 yards.
Turkeys all die.
I imagine a good turkey load would get you to 30+ yards (a guess) and even further if you invested in some tss.
I bet Dale's guys get you into great range for your son.

Congrats to the youngster.
I have 410 Rossi single shot with a fixed choke for my 9 year old and it patterns decent out to about 25 yards with her shooting. I bet inside of 25 yards, your 20 ga will be similar. Over 30 yards might push its limits with a modified choke, but Bearpaw will probably get them good and close for the kids.

Thank you guys for the input and the congrats
I’m thinking it will be good to go and I bet Dales guys will get them in close
Really looking forward to it
We’re running to TSC on Saturday and using their patterning board
I bought him a portable shooting bench awhile back and I have a lead sled for him to practice with

Just something I learned hunting turkeys. I put a turkey full choke on my shotgun, and missed the first 3 birds I shot at since they were too close... All of the ones I've killed since then could have been shot with a modified choke. That said, after three misses I put sights on the shotgun rather than just the bead. I almost think a double gun would be best, with 2 different chokes.

My kids still use their break action 20 with modified choke to kill turkeys. They love the gun. We blind hunt them and often have shot 5-30 yards max. It thumps them hard. We shoot the cheap Remington 3” turkey loads and they pattern better than all the expensive stuff.

A modified choke in a 20 gauge is perfect for a youth turkey gun. Most kids I've taken kill birds under 20 yds. Never would shoot past 30. A modified choke at that distance will kill any turkey out there and give them what I consider a "better" pattern than a full/xfull/turkey choke. The tightest pattern doesn't always mean the best pattern when it comes to turkey hunting. Especially youth. :twocents:

Thanks guys

Those guns will punt hard with a stout load. Try it to see. Could create a flinch. Other that that, yes, it will certainly be adequate for turkey.

i would reach out to bearpaw, my guess would be that he includes some target practice before going out sitting for turkeys.. gun should be great , right ammo is key with a few shots to see what the gun is doing at range before shooting at a bird

He just contacted me and said they want the hunters to have turkey chokes so I’m going to borrow sisters Winchester 1100 20gauge to see if it fits and the prize package includes some good ammo and nice turkey choke and he’ll get some practice in the next 2 weeks and when we check in at dales for the hunt

good deal, i figured he had his standards for this hunt.... good luck!

Looks like my sisters Winchester will work plus it’s an auto loader so that will help with any recoil issues
We will be treating it like a single shot and only loading it 1 shell at a time for starting
