Anyone got the link to the 2022 hunting proposals (with permit #'s)...as I saw a blog at NWS that WDFW is proposing a slash in certain permits but an increase in cow permits (Yakima) this year. Just curious and would like to see the proposals before the final meeting in early April.
thanks in adavnce,
Grade

Some one posted a link in another thread showing the increase in permits but can’t remember where I saw it. I captured a screen shot of some of it though.

Irrelevant what they propose. It's what the commissioners decide we get.
-
I know it's not exactly new, but 5 MF antlerless permits for each Winston, Coweeman, and Toutle; still just blows me away how fast that herd dropped and stayed dropped.
-
But no more bull permits? Anybody seeing a problem with that?

Proposed changes link...so I assume it just means bull permits will remain the same as last year..ie really low... :'(

I’m sure the new commissioners will get it figured out Karl!🤦🏻

I'd rather see those cows get corralled off the feed lot and sent to the Blues rather than killed. Or far fewer cow tags and a few more bull tags? I'm no commissioner though.

2023 late rifle whitetail opens Nov 11  8 days of hunting

That would be nice, but they would probably just end up being nutrients for the predators.
-
I think it's great that they have the objective numbers.
But at the same time do we always have to be below objective. Some of those permits seem like they doubled or tripple or more.
Why can't they just come up with a good round number and say hay ,we are gonna add 30 permits to all these categories. And will look at the objective number of elk in the herd next year and plus or minus a bit to keep our sustainable objective up above what we say it should be.
It always works out like this let's tripple the permits in a year or two ,will have to bring permit numbers down to crap.
Let's not go overboard be below objective herd numbers.
I see no harm being a hair above on the number instead of being below for many years to build back up again.

No tags for you! I'm sure there is logic in there somewhere, I simply lack the ability to find it.

Use this link. You have to scroll to page 47 for all proposed elk permits.
The other link is for what they call "notable proposed changes" only.

:yeah:
Bull tags remain consistent...and decreased in some areas...still baffles me that areas that once had 100 plus bull tags went to single digits... apparently my experience in elk country is different than wdfw survey's.

The little naches is at objectives now? Hmm, they bounce the permits on archery cow permits from one end of the scale to the other so damn fast. :dunno:
-
I see the huge increase in permits shown in the powerpoint slide screen shot but I am not seeing that increase on the actual document. I am seeing that the numbers are the same for the most part and more reductions than additions. What am I missing? :dunno:

You are correct about that. It could be something as simple as they didn't update the numbers on that document for the Yakima units. I didn't check them all, but it shows the updated number for St. Helens units.

Go to my original post and click the second link you’ll see what your looking for. The slide show was from the commission meeting I believe. (https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20220324/f3dd487ff1fa83e66df0459ae283e67b.jpg)

Here is a link from the commission meeting, scroll through to the summary presentation for elk or deer you will find the changes…
https://wdfw.wa.gov/about/commission/meetings/2022/17-19mar-fwc-agenda
There are proposals for changes to muzzleloader and archery equipment as well.
Apparently 1x scopes on muzzle loaders are going to be legal as well as breadcrumb nocks and range finding sights for archery…

Those were the proposals. There were some arguments for and against. We'll have to see what comes out of the wash.
-
If I were to guess they’ll pass those rule changes as well as approve the cow permit increases.
-
Possibly. Those confidence intervals seem awfully small to me - guessing there hasn't been as much change above or below those targets as they think there has been. With the new commissioners stressing precautionary management, I wouldn't be super surprised to see the increases in cow harvests dialed back a bit in the Yakima area.

All I see is pure garbage. More cow permits would mean lots of elk. Hurd doing great? Less bull permits means Hurd not doing great?

RE: Yakima herd management...
Yes, shocked to see such a whiplash ratcheting up of cow permits yet again. Not as bad as what they did a few years ago, but still seems like "boom-bust" management to me. We'll be back to scraps the first time they get one survey below objective survey or can't complete it due to weather.
Bull tag restriction makes zero sense if there are legitimately 11,000+ elk in the population, there's got to be somewhere in the neighborhood of 2,000 bulls.
The fact that 2 years of no data were used to justify elimination of over-the-counter archery cow tags still irks me. Guess they think offering a higher number of early only and late only draw tags evens the allocation in terms of opportunity. Harvest, not so much.

Quality archery elk tags were decreased 27% statewide. Rimrock lost 33%. Having 5 to 15 archery QE tags for these units is absurd. Success rates are still 20% or less.

That's terrible news

The new permit numbers are pretty depressing if you are an elk hunter in this state. With this commission I'm going to be shocked if they approve OIL permit levels at the level they were proposed.

I agree. I was so dissappointed in the last commission meeting. Testimony was falling on deaf ears with a predetermined vote.
It is a sad day when hunters are "shocked" if the commission follows the recommendation of department. It won't be long and the WDFW will be pointless, just let the commission shut it all down, no need for WDFW. The input of WDFW doesn't matter.
-
We now have an Anti-Hunting Commission and things are not going to get better until they are ousted!
-
Where are we at with senate confirmations? Slimmer of hope keeping one or two of them from being confirmed.
But then again two more pro-hunting votes have terms expiring this year.

When we went for almost 10 years with 200 to 250 cow permits in the Yakima Herd GMU's, it made the 20 cow permits for the same GMU's happen over the last few years. But to just suddenly bring them back to 150 doesn't seem right to me either. There needs to be a middle ground here with cow and bull permits. This feast or famine approach is getting ridiculous.
In the new regs, I also see that Little Naches (346) has 150 cow permits, and the Umtanum has 150 cow permits and includes 342 AND 346 in the boundaries. WTF?

I was looking at that... doesn't make sense.
They also have the late cow tags now... area's that see migration. So what's the goal... provide opportunity, or herd control... putting hunting pressure on the herd's in December when they are heading for the welfare lots ..hmm..
If this is management I'm confused.

Looks like Muzzle loader don't get the a lot of tags like the others again this year
