Title: How often are you drawn?
Post by: Dansk on May 11, 2009, 11:47:49 AM
I just started playing the application slot machine for trophy tags accross many of the western states.  Curoius to know how many different states/tags/species you all apply for each year and, generally speaking, how often are you drawn?

I apply to almost all of them, though the list is shrinking, and so far about one per year.  The states without points, I seem to be the luckiest in.

CO elk, WI Bear, MT deer, WA everything except goat.  Never been drawn in CO or WA for anything.  CO I just put in for the points to someday draw a specific tag.  MT about every other year on average.  I seem to be kind of on the unlucky side with them all.

I apply for 50-60 hunts per year and Ive not drawn anything but bear tags that I consider top shelf hunts.  Im looking long term on my apps though and really only apply for the best of the best.  Im a very patient person. Im counting on some great hunts in about 25 years...

In the mean time Im locked in on some of the better OTC stuff in Idaho.

I apply in almost all of the western states, and the only tag I have drawn was a toutle bull tag.

In the past 10 years or so I have drawn,
WA goat
WA sheep
WA moose
Entiat deer rut
Toutle bull
Blues spring bear
Blues turkey
plus doe, cow, and
misc turkey permits
Every couple of years, I get drawn for something. Last year I was particularly lucky with bear, turkey and bull permits.

Yes, I believe he had a goat and moose OIL tags and a St. Helen's elk or somewhere near there.  All DIY's too if I remember.  He took a real nice goat.

Went back and looked and it was Alpinegus.  Goat, Moose and Pumice Plains Elk.  That's a lot of meat.

I guess it was 12 years.
1996 goat
1999 sheep
2002 moose
2004 entiat deer
2008 bear, elk and turkey
These were all DIY, although a passerby helped haul out the moose.

I have drawn  the Tok sheep hunt in Alaska first time I ever put in for it, Wife and I both drew Entiat sheep tags in Alaska and now we have both drawn multi season deer tags .

This is since 2000 but we have only put in for them once

24 years of sheep, moose and goat apps and not a single tag.  Depending on how my blood tests come back, I might throw my 30 points into the hat for an elk permit.

Jeeez, I got think on this one, some of which I know were before points began in some states.
Elk
WA, '97 and now eleven points and not drawn since but over half the years were points only.
OR, every other year success since started in '02.
ID, 84, 87, 92, 98, 01
MT, 83, 85, 88, 96, 00, 04 and 05
WY, 86, 90, 02 and now in 09
UT, 82 and 93 and I so desperatly want to go back again!!!!!!!
CO, 95 and 99
NM, 89, 94, 03
AZ, 86 and 91

I'll have to look for sure when I get home but I'm fairly certain I have max points available in UT and AZ with max points gone for WY with this years draw.  The rest that have point systems I have the points starting the year following I was there. UT, AZ are annual automatic in the draw.  I usually pick 1-2 others also, except this year thanks to WY draw.

Deer
Max points in WY and WA.

Moose
13 pts in WA
Don't remember how many but a bunch of points in WY.

State game dept's love my $$$$!!!!!!  :chuckle:

Been drawn here for elk 3 times and once for deer, not including multi season. My 15 yr old son has been hunting since he was 9 and has had 3 deer permits, 1 elk and 1 multi season for deer and 1 multi season for elk. He's gone one year without some sort of permit, lucky little sh*t! I figure he'll be drawn for Bighorn before I am.

6x6 has got some good hunts coming!  With those points in those states, it better be 8x8in8 by the time you're done!  :chuckle:  Seriously, you've been hunting all over the west since you were like 20.  I'm guessing there's a lot of us that wish we would have started applying elsewhere back then.  I'm 34 and started getting serious about points in WA and AZ about 10 years ago...wish I would have had the $$ and foresight to start all the other states then too.

Anyway, I've drawn a couple primo tags and a handful of good/average tags.  The best were a NM 16A archery bull tag in 2006 and an AZ late rifle coues tag in 2004.  I'm on the cusp of AZ archery elk (10 points) and another late rifle coues tag (6 points going on 7), but those are my only realistic opportunities in the next couple years unless I get lucky.

84   Pratt river goat
90   green river deer
93   Dickey bull
99   naches goat
2001 Pearrygin late buck
2004 west okanagon whitetail
2009 Matheny bull

I have built points from day 1, and consider myself lucky, especially with 2 mtn goats behind my belt. Hoping for sheep and moose before I croak ! :chuckle:

Don't mean to hijack, but Falcon, was wondering how that Green River tag was?  Was looking at the raffle choices tonight and remembered the Hunt-Wa member who drew the raffle blacktail tag.  Sounds like his hunt wasn't going well last I remembered.  You got me thinking that maybe we should have directed him to Green River.  My cousin drew that tag about the same time as you, and the story I remember was that he saw a number of good bucks in there.  He shot a nice 3 pt., maybe 95" or so.  Anybody else hunt it more recently?

I think the Green River GMU was the only one the raffle winner was not permitted to hunt.

Post by: WAcoueshunter on May 13, 2009, 10:52:06 PM
Ahh.  That sucks!  With the late buck hunt, seems like that's the one raffle tag that doesn't do you a whole lot of good unless you can access good areas that don't otherwise get hunted much.  Of course, still would be nice to hunt with a rifle in late November / early December.

This is my 20th aniversary for moose sheep, and goat in Washington, and deep down i know i will probably never be drawn... but hey.. consistency is everything right??? Ive drawn exactly 2 doe tags, and 2 cow elk tags in those years.  Is there anyone in the WDFW i can become friends with???  Oh yeah, Ive also got 4 points for moose in Colorado, but this poor man cant shell out 70 bones for a bonus point anymore.
Title: Re: How often are you drawn?
Post by: bobcat on May 13, 2009, 10:55:02 PM
Westside deer was the only raffle ticket I bought. Not because I think it's the only one worth having, but only because it is the least popular and I figured with my very limited funds, I would go for the one with the best odds. I guarantee if I drew that tag I wouldn't let it go to waste.

I've drawn:
1 WA Deer (any deer youth tag)
1 WA Elk (cow tag)
1 NM Elk - archery

10 points for WA sheep, 9 for goat and moose, 5 for elk, and 7 for deer in WA.  Also 1 point for WY elk, deer, antelope.

My friend had me convinced for years that I would never get drawn. What was the point spending extra cash to go into a draw which I would never win? I spent the last 4-5 years applying and have not been drawn for any special permits. I am beginning to think he was right.

They are worth 10 points applied to any species.
I know a guy that got 20 points that way.

Hmm.... I think you're on to something H&W.  Maybe I should hunt for poachers with my vid cam every year instead of hunting deer/elk.  I'm bound to draw sweet tags every three years if I'm going in with 20-30 points (= 400 to 900 ENTRIES!!!  :yike:).... I mean how hard would it be to find 2-3 poachers over a two year period?  Hmmmmm......

What I want to know how is it the drawing "random"? I ask because two different guys I know have drawn all three oil tags since they started the point system. The odds are you will never draw any of the oil tags, and yet some people at minimum of 500to1 draw all three I can't even calculate the odds on that.If you look at the responses so far most people don't draw anyting or tags that are easy to get ,then some people draw stuff constantly,And they call it "random " ;).Sorry I'm venting it's just frustrating 25 years for sheep, goat, and moose, and nothing. Don't get me wrong I put in every year after all someone  has to win.I think I feel a little better :).

I feel your frustration.  It's is a very funny system for being so "random".  The group I hunt with has a couple very lucky guys that hit pretty often, and the rest of us draw nothing.  I've often wondered if it has certain WILD ID numbers that the computer system likes. :dunno:  Like you said though, someone has to win.  Good luck to all.

Next year I may try to get one of the OTC Southeast mulie tags in ID.  Need to do some research tho..

1997 Washington Cali sheep raffle
1998 Oregon sheep raffle
2000 Wyoming deer tag
2001 Wash goat tag
2001 carlton elk tag
2005 Nevada deer tag
2006 Montana antelope tag
2006 Wash cali sheep tag
2009 WAFNAWS dall sheep hunt raffle
2009 Idaho moose tag
Wow! it looks like a lot of luck, but I apply for all the states that have bighorn tags and for most other species and buy tickets in most all available raffles. I figure I'm in about 40 "draws" a year for a grand total of 480 chances(give or take 10) That's a success rate in the 3% range. I didnt look that lucky when you look at the odds but you have to play the game to get the tags.

WDFW-SUX, it only takes one to win!!!!
The part I like about raffles are I know the funds usually are going to the organizations that put money back into those species(FNAWS,DBSS,SCI,etc)
That being said-I won the WASH raffle with a $20 investment then decided to splurge for the OR raffle and sent them $50.
