Title: 2022 Hunter ed incentive permit
Post by: Rainier10 on April 12, 2022, 02:45:35 PM
I am number 8 on the list this year for a hunter ed incentive permit.

My guess is both elk, all whitetail and mule deer permits will all be gone.  That leaves a ton of blacktail permits that I know nothing about.  I can hunt during any open general or permit season with the weapon that is allowed for that season.

Looking for input on what permit I should go for to try and get a decent blacktail.  Some of the units I can probably get close to the PCT and get a benchleg I would imagine. I have never shot a blacktail buck.  Back in the day I shot a few does during archery in Ryderwood, Winston Creek and Coweeman.

Feel free to pm me if you prefer.

Blah blah blah. You poor thing! Another incentive tag.  :chuckle: :chuckle:. On a serious note congrats. That one I’d like to have a lot of time on to try and figure it out. But the damn rain that’s the only time I’ve killed a blacktail.

The luck is amazing.  I am not looking forward to the rain at all. When I was younger it didn’t bother me at all hiking around Ryder wood in the wet brush.  I should know by the end of the week what I end up with.

A big mature blacktail is the hardest animal you’ll ever hunt. Mule deer and elk are easy compared to big blackies.

They are on permit three right now. I’m number eight. Might be on the clock tomorrow or Wednesday is my guess.

I’m on the clock. Three sweet whitetail tags and two blacktail areas to pick from.

Decisions decisions.

I'd go with the region 5 blacktail. But that's my main home area so I'm very bias

Whitetails in 215 would be fun.

If I were choosing, I would go with the region one whitetail or region 4 blacktail. But I would be happy with any of them.

For blacktail I'd probably go with region 4 as well. The problem with the late blacktail seasons in much of region 5 and 6 is most of that time overlaps with modern firearm elk season, so you won't be alone out there. The only dates you'd have it to yourself would be November 1-4.

I would see the biggest blacktails when I was rifle elk hunting and ouldnt shoot them.

Yeah I know it's certainly a possibility. It's just that with the choices he has I'd choose one in which there wouldn't be ten thousand other hunters in the woods at the same time hunting a general season.

He doesn't have a choice for region 6 from what I saw??  I'd pick one of those whitetail units, that would be a fun hunt.  NO clue about region 4 or 5 for blacktail.

Not a ton of elk in the best blacktail country of region 5. actually not a ton of elk in region 5 at all.

I wouldn’t touch region 1 after how bad blue tongue hit last year.  Good luck!

Pick a region close enough to you that you can scout and learn some spots, and be in the woods on the days you have prime weather.  Blacktail make a very tough 'destination hunt' for a DIY hunter.

Tough choice, so which way are you leaning?  Too bad region 6 wasn't available but big blacktail are no joke, chasing around rutting Big whitetails would be fun.

Right after I went down and bought a lotto ticket I'd take the unit two whitetail tag.

So my initial thought was the 100 units.  Reason being there are a ton of units with late permits.  I have hunted in many of those units before.

The 200 units are tempting, I believe they probably hold bigger deer but they are also tougher to get to those units and there are less units.

A big blacktail would be great but I just don't have the time to commit to a hunt like that this year.

For me it is about a quality hunt and I don't define quality by inches of antler.  I define it as time in the woods with lots of opportunity, ease of access, being able to hunt with friends and having lots of options.  For those reasons the 100 units make the most sense to me.  If you are lucky you can shoot a great deer in the general season in the 100 units and have an even better chance in the late hunts.

Thanks for all the input.  I will keep you all posted as the hunt progresses.

If I'm reading it correctly this is an "im addition to" tag correct?

Yes.
All of the incentive, raffle and auction tags are an "in addition to" tag.

:yeah: additional deer tag.  I do have to buy the tag for $45 or something like that I believe.

Look at the book to see where some of the big WT's come from.  You're on the right track.  Good luck.

With all of the blue tongue die off from last year coupled with my busy schedule I ended up taking a pass on this tag. I know numbers weren’t affected as much in the far northeast and probably could have connected but decided to pass there as well. I hope to draw again in the future as I would like to harvest a nice whitetail. It just didn’t make sense this year. Hopefully the deer bounce back again by the time I draw again.
